Time alignment isn't equivalent to phase adjustment, those two are actually very different across frequency. Being able to make phase adjustments frequency dependent would be powerful, and I wouldn't be surprised if that's the next marketing feature.

I came back to say, I'm in the same camp as Brad that it's pronounced "You-Mic". 😂😂😂 Also, I think it would make sense to flatten out the response beyond the 80hz crossover point unless you're using a very steep crossover going to the main speakers. Even if the cutoff point is set to 80hz, there's still sound coming through at frequencies above that. This is especially true if you've made lots of cuts in the frequency response and the overall average SPL has been lowered by as much as it was here. You can see how big the hump is above 80hz so even with a normal 24dB crossover slope, lots of sound will come in above 80hz because of that large bump in the frequency response.
@chandan6119
@chandan6119 3 года назад
i was concerned about the same thing. now everything above 80hz is at least 5db louder right? so the total bass of the system is actually 5-10db quieter compared to high frequencies
@joentell
@joentell 3 года назад
@@chandan6119 Yes, you expect to lose some SPL when applying DSP correction if you do what is recommended and apply mostly cuts. You usually want to re-run your room correction on the AVR to balance the sub(s) to match the mains. That isn't the issue I was pointing out though. I'm talking about how the corrected response is flat up to the crossover point, but shoots way up shortly after since that section is uncorrected. That uncorrected part will likely be very audible when it shouldn't be.
@chandan6119
@chandan6119 3 года назад
@@joentell ya even i was talking about the peaks above 80hz ,which makes content above 80hz louder than the ones below 80hz. normally people like to be 10-15 db louder in low end bass frequencies.

Great video! 2 Questions for you two (1) Is the miniDSP Time Alignment method more accurate than the Time Alignment Tool in REW? (Q-2) Can you also level match using LFE at 85dB rather than using your L speaker at 77dB?

Is there a manual EQ option for the MiniDSP? Is there a limit to how many filters can be applied manually? And does the MiniDSP EQ each sub individually to get an ideal combined output? Or does it apply the same EQ to all 4 subs? I have a dream of building clones of Genelec's W371s. I read about what they're doing, but I'm not sure if they are doing is "normal" DSP programming, or if they really do have a secret sauce that's worth $9k each for the speakers.

I’m sure the UMIK-1/2 are great and worthwhile purchases, but for use who already own a mic (ie I have the ARC mic/stand from Anthem) how big is the delta between the UMIK and what others might already own of quality similar to that of the ARC mic from anthem. Not sure how good the Audyssey specific mics are comparatively.

We spent from 11am till 5pm calibrating the system and shooting the video. Brad had to leave after we finished recording so we didn’t get a chance to demo them yet. I have a Marantz AV7706 processor. The house curve is done within REW and then imported into the miniDSP. I believe Brad covers that in his series of videos on the miniDSP that I linked to at the end of the video. I will include that in my review of the subs.

Why do you think with EQ its "ALWAYS BETTER TO CUT & NOT BOOST"? Listening at level X requires the same amplitude whether you cut the EQ and adjust the volume higher or boost the EQ and don't have to turn the volume up as much. Same net gain/amplitude. Am I missing something ? Great video BTW. More people need MiniDSP !!!
@Youthman
@Youthman Год назад
Anytime you boost, you run the risk of adding distortion or extending beyond its capability. If you have a null in your frequency response, there is no amount of boosting of those frequencies that will help. You can’t boost what isn’t there.
@Youthman

So the idea is to get a flat frequency response by reducing your peaks

12:30, Well i was thinking this was a must too, adding a house curve, BUT, after seeing movie bass graphs from the past 2 years, the bass in movies already has a build in house curve. 95% of the movies that were graphed had a 10-15 db house curve, Some even 20db. So i didn't add a house curve to my setup. "The more you know".

@sebulbathx

Thanks for the video! I've noticed from say 80-90hz to around 110hz is where you so to speak notice the bass it gives a punch or kick when listening to like rock music or for effects in movies. But that is also where the bass gets muddy, imo. I had a lot of peaks in that region which made it really bad to crossover my subs any higher than around 60hz. Then I ran Audyseey and it brought down my peaks and now I crossover my subs at 110hz for movies. And they are still hard to locate which wasn't the case before. And I've noticed that there are a lot of information above 80hz in movies so really recommend to crossover above 80hz, I know it's the "standard" kinda, if you also can use some room correction and not have peaks in that region. Although some might find the bass lacking or sound thin which I did in the beginning because I was used to the peaks before. Forgot to mention crossover a little bit higher works best if you have two subs but one sounds fine also. But anyway what do you think of miniDSP vs Audyseey for bass correction? If you have Audyseey is a miniDSP too much or will they work great together?
@Quetzalcoatl0
@Quetzalcoatl0 3 года назад
15:00, actually it will affect it quite a bit. The crossover in the avr is not a brick wall. so those 120hz peaks should be really noticeable, if you run a sweep on the left speaker, with and without it connected you will see the hump. If you ran audessey after that, then that would take care of the peaks above 100hz and it will align the "LFE" channel to the main speakers, too!
@kyleo2113
@kyleo2113 3 года назад

Great video. Brad's video series is an essential must watch on this. Separately from this. I would love to see look of someone who managed to convince their partner or loved one to allow the purchase of a third subwoofer after the first two didn't play nice. Go though everything then somehow, some way got a Forth one in the house only to watch the measurements tank down before adding the eq and alignment. That right there, is a life and death situation for many domestic families. So really and truly, this video could help save the lives of all those who watch it and not be knocked out by their own subwoofer when their family see the first response 😉

Great video! Did you do multi location measurements? My goal will be not only to get the response nice and flat but to accomplish that as uniformly across the entire listening area as possible. I put in enough speaker cable to have as many as four aux woofers on each side of the room in addition to the main woofers. Hopefully I won't need that many but I will find out when I start measuring. I still haven't bothered to learn REW, I suppose I should but I've been using ARTA for years and I'm just sticking with familiarity. I'm not really convinced those UMIK microphones are adequate, maybe they are but I've been using Earthworks mics for years and I know their capabilities. The UMIK would certainly be a lot more economical, I should probably order one and test it... and get off my lazy butt and learn REW. I'm also looking at Smaart, that looks like a nice measurement system for about a grand which isn't bad, back in the day MLSSA set me back almost four grand and it's totally obsolete now but it was great in its day. MLSSA ran only in DOS, no Windows version! No miniDSP or any other DSP back then either, you had to design/build analog filters to do all that. You young guys don't know how easy you have it:-) Back in my early DIY days when I still did ported boxes we didn't have box modeling software, we did differential equations on pocket calculators or slide rules, like I said, you young guys don't know how easy all this stuff is today!

From a graph point of view, it's much prettier the way you did it but from a practical point of view it's probably not quite as optimum. Yeah, I like to make the graphs pretty too but over the years of doing this, I've learned it doesn't always produce the best result. Sometimes a good approximation is better than dialing in to the Nth degree. There is always some kind of balance of trade offs going on.

Not sure if there was a follow up video or not but how did the subs sound in the room after the EQ, was it a noticeable difference in sound and output?

Thanks for the link for the update. Great video by the way and the results seem honest for this small sub. I have been running 4 subs in my theater for a while ( 2 SB 16s and two HSU ULS 15s.) and I am pretty happy with the sound but I wonder if I could get even more output. The most I have done as far as tweeking is set the rear subs at 180 degree phase and set the SB 16s at their recommended settings and volume. If I get too bored I might give the mini DSP a try. I’d like to see if it would make much of a difference for me.

Does the mini DSP 2X4HD stay hooked to the AVR after calibration or it is just a calibration tool?
@Youthman
@Youthman 3 года назад
It’s a DSP (digital signal processor) so it remains in line. Sound comes from the sub out on my Marantz AV7706, into the miniDSP 2x4HD, time alignment, house curve and EQ adjustments are made, then sent to my dual JTR subs.

You just gained a new subscriber. Your production quality is outstanding (I would expect nothing less from a videographer), your thumbnails are on point. There is no doubt you will continue to grow. My only recommendation would be to try and upload one video per week vs one per month. That will help you grow faster. Good luck with your channel and with your business.

When I saw this, I went over to Brad's channel and subscribed. It is awesome that you guys all support each other like you do. I followed Brad's mini dsp tutorials this past weekend. They are solid instructions, that are easy to follow. I was able to get a beautiful house curve with my dual sb3000 setup. The bass blends so nice with my system now. I have had the mini dsp for a long time, but I was intimidated to start setting it up before.
