Great tutorial series, it helped me get my 3 subs all sounding great. One thing you never touch back on in the end though: Do you leave you LPF in the "Bass" settings untouched at 120hz or do you match that to the 110hz that you crossed the front channels at???

Hey Brad, I was hoping I could get your input. First off, I used your instructions to calibrate my two 2000PRO subs and found your instructions very helpful. Thank you! I replaced these 2 subs for a couple of Klipsch 12" subs, which are a 1/3 of the price I paid for my 2000 Pro's. Do you feel I would be downgrading the sound if I calibrated "all 4 subs" in spite of the different brand and quality/power output. Should I just leave my 2000 Pros as is, or do you feel I would benefit by adding the 2 Klipsch for a total of 4 subs? Thank you

Great video series; I've been watching the various parts to familiarize myself and plan follow these steps soon. A clarification please, as I couldn't find a clear answer on the miniDSP website or in the product manual online - If I want to connect 4 subwoofers to a Denon X3700H receiver that has 2 subwoofer outs, would it be ideal to use both the analog RCA inputs, then assign the front 2 subs to 1 and the rear 2 to the other via the miniDSP software, or connect just 1 subwoofer input from the AVR, and then assign all the 4 subwoofers to it?

Hi, I was hoping you could give me some advice. I want to correct only one subwoofer and not touch my main left and right speakers which will all be running via my marantz reciever. So my question is do i disconnect the left and right speakers and try and flatten the subwoofer response independently or do I measure the entire system as a whole crossed over at 90hz via the marantz? If I measure and flatten the subwoofer independently once I add the main speakers won't it just destroy the flat response? I'm thinking it's better to measure the sub and main speakers together but then only tweak the subwoofers response to attain a smoother response?

Hi if like me I’m using 2 subwoofers, that are connected to my arcam av40 and have already calibrated with Dirac, I assume from the subwoofer outputs on the arcam I would plug into input 1 and 2 of the mini dsp , then connect my subwoofers to outputs 1 and 2 on the mini dsp is this correct?

The latest UI for mini dsp is nothing like this one but thats not my big problem. I have the mains set to 200 hz crossover but every test tone comes through the mains and the sub. Just the left main if I have that selected, as with the right. :-(

Hello, It is a great start. greatly appreciate your effort to educate the basics of HT tuning and set ups. one thing I noticed in several home theater You tube , pretty much everyone assume that the listener knows a lot and lot of things are excluded. It would be great if you can make it a complete video for an average HT person. how the HDMI is connected to AV from computer and why, what should be the Master volume setup and levels on the AV, subwoofers, when you tune with the DSP etc.., thanks once again for your effort.

Hi Brad, thanks for the awesome videos! Quick question, do you think it would be worth getting the minidsp to EQ one sub? I have a Monolith M-215 and the REW graph doesn't look that bad, but there are a couple dips that could be smoothed out some.
@HomeTheaterGamer
@HomeTheaterGamer 3 года назад
That’s a really good question and something I’ve wanted make a video on. It can help to easily get the best response out of any sub (since it’s a single sub, the process goes rather quickly), and you can have multiple configurations that you can switch to with different curves set up. But it’s true potential is only seen when used with multiple subwoofers in my experience. If you already have something like Audyssey, I would consider testing that and seeing if does a good enough job flattening things out.
@dkindig
@dkindig 3 года назад
I have had outstanding results using the miniDSP with a single sub. Using REW and a calibrated mic I was able to get rid of the worst of the dips and peaks by experimenting with the sub location. Then I used the auto-eq with REW and now have a response curve that is flat from the crossover freq and down 3dB at 20 Hz (12" Adire Shiva sub in .707 alignment, sealed 2 cu ft cabinet). The improvement in low end quality was amazing! Quick tip if your receiver does automatic loudness compensation: DON'T use a "house curve", let the receiver do that work.

Thanks for the comment! I'm considering offering remote calibration services, though it may end up being something I rarely do because of the added complexity of the "remote" part. When something doesn't go right, troubleshooting remotely STINKS and can make things take a lot longer.

You don’t HAVE to do this, the point is that you can if you want to because the hardware and information is now available to you. Or just decide that you’re happy and content with the sound you already have. It’s the same with any hobby really. There’s a rabbit hole you can choose to go down or not; that’s ultimately up to you. The fact that the ability to do ANY of this is much more accessible than it was 5-10 years ago is amazing.

Thanks! Your tutorial is great. I bought my minidsp 2x4 and am about to start the process with my subs. One sub will be in the front of the room and one in the rear. Do I need to play around with polarity, or it looks like it's called "invert" on the software you were showing. Thanks.
@HomeTheaterGamer
@HomeTheaterGamer 4 месяца назад
Thanks for the Super Thanks! You can try playing around with the invert function using REW’s alignment tool, as it will show you pretty accurately and instantly what that will do to your subwoofers response. In newer versions of REW, you can also switch the alignment tool to “impulse response,” where you’ll be able to see the impulse peaks and determine if a sub needs to be inverted or not to match the impulse peak of the other subs in your system.

I know I’m late to the party on this. I bought the minidsp and spent 2hrs trying to get sound to even output from the device. I checked all my cables and they all work without the device. Plus the minidsp was being recognized by my laptop and the app was communicating with it (or so it seemed). No clue if I did something wrong or if it’s just a bad unit. Right now I have a refund request in but if you have any tips on what the issue could be, I’ll give it a try. I followed all you setup steps and even watch the HT gurus video to ensure I didn’t miss anything. Everything runs perfect once it’s disconnected so I’m at a loss. Thanks for this playlist even if I don’t get this working. Once again you have done a great job and your time is very appreciated.

Is my Minidsp 2x4HD Defective? I have the cables physically installed as follows. Reciever LFE to input 1 on minidsp, output 1 to L Sub, and output 2 to R Sub. All the inputs and outputs match on the MiniDSP routing screen on the computer, with what is physically installed. All unused channels/routings are turned off. I noticed no signal (visibly/audibly on the computer screen meter output channel 2) going to my R Sub. I then looked at the other input/output meters, and there is a signal going to output 3 (even though its turned off on the routings). I then unmute output 3, and get signal to my right sub which is physically connect to output 2! Hmm I only plan to have two subs, so this isnt a show stopper. So Im fine with my work-around, I guess! @HomeTheaterGamer
@HomeTheaterGamer Год назад
Main issue would be frequency responses not matching between the two in the lower octaves, which may or may not be noticeable to you. The transient response of each will be different as well(basically how quick the driver can move and respond to a signal), so even when dialed in one might be slightly less responsive than the other. This might not be noticeable at all unless you’re looking at impulse response sweeps in REW.

The SVS app is great, especially if you want to boost the output temporarily but the MiniDSP does everything the SVS PEQ does and more so it would be best to leave everything stock and calibrate with MiniDSP.

I am concerned about the mimiDSP noise floor. Can it be used with high sensitivity speakers such as horn based speakers. I imagine a lot of hiss coming from the tweeter unless the miniDSP has a noise gate .

I can’t speak to that as I don’t have any experience using the MiniDSP outside of subwoofers. Maybe someone else can chime in here and answer your question.

I spent 8 hours trying to EQ my 2 subs with a Dayton Audio LF-DSP(only does one sub) unit and it bloody confusing and seems to be a waste of time. When the money is available I'm going with this unit for sure. Thanks Brad!

@Richard T, instead of being ungrateful for a free tutorial, you could simply go to Settings > Playback Speed and slow it down to up to 0.25 speed so you can follow along. Oh, and there's also the pause button too.

@@trishpipkins Yeah, I thought it was funny too. I'm technology challenged, which makes it even funnier. I wouldn't have understood much of this regardless of the speed of his voice. Anyway, it seems I may have upset you or offended you. I apologize for that. Take care.

If you have two sub outputs from your processor, should I use both or just one for the input? Thanks!
@FatterTony
@FatterTony 3 года назад
It would be better to use one but if you are using 2, you need to make sure that all the settings are set as a baseline / the same on each sub on the AVR/Processor and let the MiniDSP do all the work.

There's just one problem. We need a bigger TV. Having three subwoofers is something I had no idea I need in my life. But now that you've got them hooked up I just can't go back to life with two subwoofers. I guess I should look into working more overtime to pay for it. 😂😂😂

Great video. It was very clear and well articulated. Question: My receiver has 2 independent subwoofer outputs. This video shows the use of a single output from the receiver. Should I use both outputs from my receiver? It has Audyssey XT32 and can adjust each sub individually.
@johandeen6096
@johandeen6096 2 года назад
Was wondering this also. When you have Sub EQ (usually when you have XT32) then you should connected the subs using both outputs as described here: www.minidsp.com/support/community-powered-tutorials/201-dual-sub-integration Be aware that two outputs does not always mean both can be adjusted individually.

1 is fine in most cases so if you use 2, make sure they settings are at 0db etc in the AVR/Processor. The one benefit to using 2 is that you can turn them off individually but that would render the calibration file unusable anyway. The sub outputs we see nowadays is much more useful for systems without a DSP on the LFE line.
@mihaiiliescu1324

@@FatterTony , please be more specific , I have to connect each sub output from AVR to DSP 2x4HD , sub 1 to input 1 and sub 2 to input 2 , the matrix will be in cross in/out . ok . ?
@FatterTony
@FatterTony Год назад
@mihaiiliescu1324 I don't think it would make sense to plug in 2 sub outs from avr into 2 ins on the dsp as the usefulness of 2 x sub outputs is rendered obsolete when using a dsp. So 1 x sub rca from the dsp then output from the dsp to however many subs you have 👍

Thanks for your video presentation, how would you use the mini dsp when your receiver has two subwoofer outputs, thanks.
@HomeTheaterGamer
@HomeTheaterGamer 3 года назад
Since the MiniDSP acts as your splitter, you’d only use one of the subwoofer outputs on the receiver. The second output could come in handy if you have the need for another MiniDSP (for subwoofer counts higher than 4) or a bass shaker system.
