Predictable. Minimum wage goes up, and fast food becomes more expensive. And many fast food workers are replaced by automation.

As someone that worked in fast-food, it was always the cashiers up front (of a certain half the population) that were the laziest employees. They'd stand up front doing virtually nothing and gossiping while the rest of us guys in the back actually got stuff done. Hardly surprising that they'd be replaced first, considering they're the most useless and simple to automate.

Can't say I'm at all surprised. The food industry actually operates on a pretty slim margin due to the simple fact that it's not like a clothing store where they can just leave stuff sitting on a shelf until it's sold. Whether it's a grocery store, restaurant, or fast food, everything they sell has a limited shelf life that can be as short as minutes when it comes to fast food.

I told people about it. And they say that the government workers are experts and they know what they are doing and that this will improve the lives of people. Look where we are now.

The other thing is that fast food is supposed to be quick and cheap. Prices have shot up since COVID, even more than in other areas.

The only downside is that this'll cause more California's to leave and infect other states with their stupidity.

As the saying goes, be careful what you wish for- you just might get it!

Thank God I live in Texas. Food's gone up a little bit, both in groceries & fast food, but nothing like in Commiefornia. I was lucky to pay $28 for a family pack at Panda Express.

I wonder when the automated cooks will be rolled out, I know there were a few restaurants doing it.

Jokes on them, I switched to a Keto Diet, all meat, eggs, cheese, and a few veggies.

I love self-check out and digital kiosk because I just grab and pay and go instead of complaining to minimum wage worker about how some item is 5 cents more expensive than elsewhere.

I feel like the California politicians don’t seem to understand how basic economics works. You have literally raised the COG by raising minimum wages and now companies will have to charge more for things to pay for that increase in pay. You are doing it backwards based on the reaction to your policies.

Been seeing these digital kiosks in the east coast too as a replacement for a waiter, and every fast food place that's installed them has had significantly less traffic.

Those kiosks are awesome for one reason: I add loads of free extras on all my stuff. Otherwise, I would have had no clue it was even an option.

One can't feel sorry for these people when the warning signs are obvious, but they can't think beyond themselves and their current year problems.

I've been touring colleges with my son and one school had a ton of those rolling robot coolers delivering food. So much for DoorDash drivers.

I have developed a bit of a Twisted sense of humor in recent years. Results in me laughing hysterically at sheer incompetence or literal r****ation. And I'm not talking about like a subtle tee hee or a chuckle. But a full-blown obnoxious laugh that some have said sounds like Joker's laugh from the animated series. It also makes the stupid shut up and go away. We had one of those DEI meetings the other day, and almost fell out of my chair as I busted a gut laughing.

Two dollars or twenty dollars, this was inevitable.

This is the main reason why economics need to be taught in schools. These politicians can't put 2 and 2 together, both figuratively and literally. When all the restaurants close up and leave California, that higher minimum wage isn't going to do any good.

This would make sense till you remember In-N-Out has been paying their workers the new min wage since forever and still have cheaper prices, hell they even increased theirs to stay about min wage and still are cheaper. I mean one two people get paid to stand outside and take orders, they have no shortage of customers.

In Canada, it's been YEARS since the self-ordering machines were implemented. Next will be the automated kitchens.

All these employees, like fry cooks and such, better pray to God that the boss, as a manager, never realizes or can afford that robots can handle flipping burgers, shaking fries, and even assembling burgers because they can. Now, that means only A few positions are left: 1. Emergency retail order taker/cash register 2. Janitor, particularly above a floor 3. Store manager, boss, and supervisor 4. Merchandise organizer/offload truck 5. Physical security These are pretty much the only jobs that will be left. So, you could probably staff a place like McDonald's with less than 10 workers.

This digital kiosk has been in use on Brazil by the last 10 years... I'm suprise the US take this long.

And so, we return to the era of carhops, and drive-ins. Because time is a flat circle.

Three years ago I tried to use one of those kiosks in McDonald's (McRib was back, the only thing that ever got me in that place). The kiosk wouldn't work and I had to order from the cashier anyway. I'm not eating anyplace that makes me work for them.

Alternatively. The goverment could pass laws to give businesses extra legal protections which should drop the cost of insurance.

In Connecticut, a Big Mac meal is $15 everywhere, except on the highway service plazas that have McD's, where it's $18. I'm all for automation. The workers are usually lazy and dumb AF and I don't trust them to wash their hands or not spit in the food. The minimum wage is $15/hr and this has killed a lot of restaurants and other small businesses, which is the point of raising min. wage so only the big corporations survive.

We have those digital Kiosk almost every where in The Netherlands. It turns most of the fast food restaurant in to very cool unhappy place.

I remember the case for why businesses were hesitant to adopt robots being that people tend to like human service more. I still think that's broadly true...but you have to have a pleasant personality or at least observe politeness and duty to benefit from that. If people think your going to bombard them with political jabbering and complaints that their already sick of, or your going to be rude or inattentive, then they're going to be more accepting of the robot, while the employer while start to find that option more viable. I'm saying this as a guy currently in retail, btw.

This is a good anecdote to bring up to the people who are trying to pass off the COVID inflation as being due to "corporate greed" (as if corporations ever stopped being greedy). The business is literally saying they refuse to raise prices because they know people won't pay them. It's almost like there is some other, very predictable, cause of inflation

You can make your order perfect in the kiosk, but some schmuck in the back still can fuck it up.

Same people who want higher wages see absolutely no problem with exploiting illegal immigrants. "The price of everything will go up!" they say to defend companies...

They increase wages to increase income tax percentages so you get less of your wage while the costs will equalize through inflation.

Something has failed if a law about minimum wage is even possible to conceive. Here in Norway we dont have laws on minimum wage, but we have the right to unionise and no serious company goes against that. If they do, they better lube the hell up because there will be some busting to be had. Foreign companies have tried their luck here on their own premises, but tossed their cards in the end if they didnt adapt.

If you're fighting a losing battle to automation, don't give automation an edge by becoming worse. It's true for burger peddlers, it's true for girlfriends.

Of all the people here. I'm most sorry for the Pizza Hit employees. Now they have extra work, with little extra gain since prices will go up.

I could make a long winded post how taxing small businesses extortionate amounts, increasing the costs to make the product in question, putting unqualified “DEI” groups in essentially paid charity work to look good for HR, essential bills such as rent, gas, water and electricity going up, increasing minimum wage alongside the tax next to it and increasing crime such as theft due to a neutered law enforcement and a pro-criminal court system could have disastrous consequences and insurance companies cashing in on it all by increasing the insurance rate and cutting the insurance payouts for people effected by the crime for the people just trying to make a living and small businesses… but I don’t want to sound like a broken record player.

At the local McDonalds here, people hate the self-checkout kiosks, mostly because they're too lazy to push buttons and too dumb to read instructions.

Honestly, this is just another reason to stop eating fast food. It's overpriced, the food is trash for your health, and even the wait time takes the "fast" out of fast food. The ovesity organizations like McDonalds and Burger King could do with a little downsizing

a lot of these restaurants have apps and websites that you can order from, too. You can order ahead of time and barely if ever interact with a person. I actually find this more convenient as I don't feel rushed to make an order and I don't have to stand in line with people who take a long time ordering.

I don't think it's a coincidence society has been pivoted to talk less to people. Fighting automation like this was to ensure there was work for the extremely young and "nueral divergent". Fast food has become a test run IMO Nobody is supposed to care since we are conditioned to hate fast food on all levels. I think it shows that the infinite money the world says exists really doesnt. Too many coincidences are stacked on top of each other. If people are outraged about tipping culture research how it got there.

This is largely what the original true progressives had in mind with the increasing of the minimum wage. The goal was to separate the wheat from the chaff so that peoples whose labor is worth the higher minimum wage aren't beholden to the lowest common denominator. Unfortunately, those progressives lived in a weakened America that wasn't comfortable with essentially forcing low-performers out of the country through economic pressures so now these unemployed people will just receive benefits generated by the remaining workers instead. This wasn't always the case; between 1890 and 1920 around half of Italian immigrants returned to Italy due to the economic pressures which made for a great selection filter. The neglecting of biological policies proposed by those early progressives is also largely the reason for this conundrum.

Build Burgers Back Better

Yes it’s terrible for thoses who get fired but to be fair, automation in restoration should have been a thing for a long time. Cheap labor aslo call cheap labor and pull political strings in his favor at expense of automation. Slavewage jobs feed a misery machine , and fast foods are one the worst.

You know, I don't even hate a minimum wage cost increase. Everything else is getting more expensive, inflation is destroying everything, having minimum wage rise with inflation seems logical. More money in employee hands to spend on goods to keep this whole cycle moving. And with automation being more viable and cheaper, you'd need less employees which works out cause current population trends are moving towards fewer kids and a shrinking population. It looks like the system should natural even out. The problem always seems to be we can't just simply let it work out. Because employers are taking an excessive amount of wealth instead of fair trickling down economics and butchering the wage castes, the government is hyperinflating the country and then sending that same money overseas and not circulating it in the country, and we're artificially keeping the population high with immigration, legal and illegal. Which just means ever more unemployment, low life standards, and increased crime. It's like the plan is to literally break everything.

it is always the same: just blame the people, who wanted a better payment for all the time and hard work they´re putting into their jobs. but how on earth can people be so delusional, thinking they have a right of living a decent live from their income? they should be grateful for having jobs - many of them even multiple jobs. there is no rule which says, people should be able to live off their earnings. the prizes are constantly growing and growing and people are moaning. but beware if someone want´s to have a higher payment. apparently now they made everyone else around them their enemies - even the fellow people, who´re struggeling themselves to pay for anything. and just tell me: how much of the prize increases of the past decade or two where due to higher wages? and how much of it was for higher costs of ressources, energy, taxes etc.? and how much of the price hikes where for paying back investors or quenching the greed? and $20 an hour? this sound pretty high - and it would be for sure in 1954 or 1964 maybe. but in today´s money? for decades now money looses it´s worth.
