Man I miss that place. I was there for just over 3 years as a recruit (wasn't admitted to Sword Coy) and went to three units. I was devastated that I got medically discharged. To all the staff and recruits currently at Pirbright - Merry christmas and all the best for the new year!

I still remember my training NCO's from 25yrs ago and times were different back then, hated them at the time but would love to meet up with them again and shake their hands and say thank you. Your an inspiration to these young men and they will probably remember you for a lot longer than you think. Any chance you can bimble in to Gib Barracks and do a similar one, love to see how much it's changed.

Always believe in yourself, overcome your fears. I always had self doubt and would always worry about tasks set before me when I was a young man back in training. But when I was on leave I would go and see my uncle and he would say if you set your mind that your going to fail you will fail, don’t get all worked up before you take on a task just set your mind that whatever is in front of you is only temporary and any obstacle can be overcome. He knew that I always struggled with the bft but I could hammer the cft and he told me that it’s all about self doubt and he was right. I knew that I’d never come first but I put the effort in, I’d run each day sometimes twice every day on leave because I knew I had to get this passed and my efforts paid off and I smashed it, but I do remember I through my guts up afterwards! So think you young lads and lasses who are just starting out in your careers fear is temporary, learn to channel fear have the right mindset to overcome fear and you’ll do just fine.

hi Fabziy merry Christmas and all the best for 2020, I know what you mean about the mindset, because when I enlisted and reported to Sutton Coldfield for my assessment I was OK and past with no problems, but when I arrived at my training Depot in Woolwich I started to think if I had made the right decision, I was OK for the first week as we did nothing as the troop building we was going in was still in use by the outgoing recruits that were on their final week and when we moved over thats when I had doubts as training started and I found it difficult despite passing all of my initial assessments, I went and had a chat to one of my instructors and troop commander and after those discussions I turned my thinking around and looked at the positives rather than the negatives, I use to keep telling myself ive only got 14 weeks of this and im out of here and joining my regiment and I passed out at my second attempt as I was back squaded (back trooped now )due to me having 2 ingrowing toe nails removed and 2 sinus operations all within my first 6 weeks of training and sent home on sick leave meant I missed half of my 14 weeks so I ended up staying for 21 weeks at Woolwich which did start to get to me but I remembered to think positive and I passed out as best recruit best at physical training and best on the ranges, I still have my crossed rifles bad to this day, and it was the best time I had in my life even though I had a tour of duty in N Ireland and then the Falklands conflict

Hi Fabziy.. Good point on self belief... I've seen many good fail.. Some of which was due to expectations... Would joining the "Cadets" be a good way to give an insight? From a personal experience I was in the cadets and it was a great foundation in preparation from know drill and the basic for training. Would it also be good with parental approval to have a cadet or several explain what they experience as a cadet.... For me this was in the mid and late 70's.... I remember learning drill, how to clean and use a rifle.. Including the Bren.. going on cadet exercises, camping, basic military manoeuvres, working in a team and best part for me was going on some of the asult courses.. Merry Christmas....

Whats a standard range for paras when running 1.2 mile. I know the minimum needed is 8.15 min but does anyone know a good range to be at. I currently am at 7.30 average

got my assessments on the 18th od December, leaving on the 17th.. Hope i pass, looking forward to basic training
