He doesn't even sound like he wants to say it. Like, "I know this isn't helpful, doesn't progress the conversation, and you don't wanna hear it, but it's literally the only thing I can provide to the conversation."
I like how the entire purpose of this phone call is to get Mr. Boss to pay for an expensive hotel as a business expense, but they want him to be the one to bring it up, and he never does.
Yeah Mr.Boss definitely could afford it, and probably could’ve offered. I guess he’s just one of those people where if you asked he’d do it no problem but he won’t just offer it if he doesn’t have to.
@@armorpro573 I mean, the boss literally has billions of dollars, and them making a mistake (key word: MISTAKE) and not ORDERING, but ASKING for money means they deserve triple the labor?
this was SO uncomfortable and fucking hilarious. they fucking captured that suuper specific feeling perfect. the phone call, the apologies, the tension
They had a podcast called "sleepy cast" they would talk about animating on RU-vid & crazy stories that happened to them they used to go to conventions shit like this actually happened to them a few times
He's not wrong by saying they all screwed up, because if the rest bothered to ask him what hotel they were going instead of putting every single detail of the vacation on Pim without checking, they would not be in that situation.
The call sounds so authentic that I wouldn't be surprised if they actually called his VA in character at a random time, and he just went with it, they recorded it and animated it
I am convinced thats what they did. Especially because he is NOT in character right away when he answers the phone. Alan had to explain who was all there first and then his VA went into character. I actually hope it's what they did because that's friggin hilarious.
they probably got the VA on the call at a random time and he didnt realize that it was actually for the show until Alan told the boys were here under their character names; and then the VA was like "ah shit this is part of the show isnt it?"
Everybody’s talking about how he nailed the “you picked the worst time” line but I love how he says “oh hey guys” he’s so delighted to hear from the gang
"I guess normally that wouldn't be a problem, but right now it's Mardi Gras here in Brazil so just everywhere is booked. Everywhere is fully booked out so... which...yeah" Love how it's so natural, he doesn't even really finish his sentence.
Actually, they did. They asked him to walk around in public, and they're gonna call him over the phone and record his lines like that. It was on the DVD commentary
this phone call is so familiar, its so realistic, thats how good this show is, especially with the "*sigh* well, shoot, you chose the worst time to go"
This was the first thing I’ve ever seen from Smiling Friends, and I pictured Mr. Boss completely different from this. When I started watching the show, my expectations of Mr. Boss changed so abruptly I cannot explain how it made me feel.
The way Mr. Boss sighs and says, "You chose the worst time to go." I wanted to crawl out of my skin. The frustration feels so real, like I've been in this situation before.
I don't think I've ever laughed as hard as when the boss said "you chose the worst time to go". It was like the whole episode was building up to that one line and Marc M crushed it
Even Mr Boss is relatable, when someone asks for your help and you genuinely don’t know what to tell them. I’m convinced they just called the voice actor from the recording studio
I've been there. Sometimes you get a call and you understand that there's a problem but it has nothing to do with you and you can't solve it if you wanted to (and you don't want to, you're busy doing something else and you made that free time for yourself and you really need that to me your time only).
The exhale and “you chose the worst time to go. I mean you chose the WORST time to go” is so uncomfortably authentic like you can tell he’s trying but doesn’t want his to be his proboem
I love how the second Pim says "WE kinda screwed up..." They all look at him all pissed off and it isn't until he clarifies by saying only he messed up that they go back to normal
What really gets me is the satellite delay. I mean, they got the exact right amount of time between “it’s us” and “oh hey guys”; that little period of relay totally sells the feel of a remote conversation, and turns whatever comes next into a miniature punchline. These guys have seasoned their comedy to perfection.
What makes this so funny to me is that I was expecting Mr. Boss to say some weird shit or have some crazy plan up his sleeve, but then it ends up being just a normal conversation with him being totally unhelpful.
Ah!! Look at Glep’s tiny suitcase! It’s so little! It makes sense because he’s small that his clothes would also be small, but it doesn’t really hit until you see his bag next to someone else’s. That’s so cute!
The call audio feels so realistic. It makes me feel like they flew to Brazil during Mardi Gras in real life then called a friend who knows people to stay with just to get the dialog right.
“Yeah I have a little battery left,” is always the funniest thing; can’t tell if it’s just honest or passive aggressive-but that kind of passive aggressive where it’s the minimum tolerated given the situation.
I live in Texas and my mom was driving down from iowa to visit me. She had a quarter tank left and missed a gas station and thought “they’ll be another one”. I was getting food after work and I happened to call her and she’s 5 miles from running out of gas and when she asked a cop he literally said “just go until you run out”. On top of that she’s hasn’t been charging her phone because old people. So she’s freaking out and im thinking of options like towing companies but man me and mr boss felt the same way in that moment.
I didn't even notice them at first but I could smell the fries on the table instantly while watching this. The artistry is immaculate. Gave me a brown smile.
0:22 "I've got a little bit of battery left" dumb question, does Michael voice Alan as well? I swear I heard his voice+accent slip when he said 'battery left'
this is the exact situation where you turn to someone as your last resort hoping they have a solution but it's like nobody can help you and you don't know what to do, it's happened to me many times lol
Dude that plays mr Boss/writes mr boss… cast mr boss… genius. You get it with the other guys.. but Mr.Boss? One minute he’s a lunatic cartoon next he’s just.. relatably.. your boss and kinda a mate at work. Somehow this show is over and above itself. It’s basically all the working parts of any other similar episodic cartoon but the genuinely organic and relatable off hand conversation as you say is just hugely refreshing and brilliant in context
I love how they’re not afraid to have people step on each other’s lines like Charlie was about to speak and mr boss jumps in with the iconic “you guys chose the worst time to go”
I just want to know what was the rest of their responsibilities on this vacation, Pim booked the plane, and apparently he had to book the hotel what werr Allen, Charlie, and Glep's responsibilities for this trip. Honnestly it feels like Allen or Charlie was supposed to book the Hotel and then shifted blame onto Pim.
It really feels like, they were just calling the voice actor of the Boss as improv, and the guy just rolled with it, despite getting no heads up about it.
Smiling Friends have the most genuine and realistic conversations between characters! I just realized. Every conversations sounds so genuine like when you talk with your friends and coworkers, not like in certain movies and TV shows where they use words and examples noone has ever heard before since the 19th century.
*Reads every other comment before I say anything because I have the independent thinking strength of a loaf of brown bread* “wOaH pHoNE cAlL sO ReALIsTiC sO cOoL sO aWsOmE i lIkE iT”
This is the most realistic and relatable call in cartoon history. It's not the topic, it's just the way they talk and interact is so normal. Is that just me?
Marc M is the master at making something so mundane extremely hilarious. Just the "Oh hey guys!" just sounds so natural and knowing what Mr. Boss looks like just combine to make me laugh my ass off.
Could've been fun to add how horrible is to deal with the struggle of waiting for your boss to pick up the damn phone when you need help for once, noise delays, breaking up...
This is probably the most realistic conversation ever made for an animated series, characters overlapping, speaking in different tones, clearly uncomfortable and interacting naturally.
I love how realistic the phone call and general situation is. It's like the boss is a character in the show, knowing he's just playing a part, and this was a genuine moment where in all seriousness he doesn't know how to help out. "Oh, hey guys."
