I always include a pound of Walnuts, calorie dense @ 3000/lb, shelf stable, no cook, 65% fat + 14% protein + 14% carbs - 7% soluble fiber, contains minerals and vitamins, a person (or squirrel) could survive on Walnuts.

Good if you have water. Your body needs a lot of water to digest that. If not, you could accelerate dehydration.

It's pretty simple, Fat is 230 calories per ounce. Protein and Carbohydrates are 115 per ounce. Half of fat. You cannot get more calorically dense than fat. It doesn't exist, and even hitting 230 is hard, because most fat is not pure. My pack has 17,500 calories, which is 5 days times 3,500. The latter is not enough calories per day for really strenuous physical activity, especially if it is cold, but where I'm located I can also supplement my food from the surroundings. My breakdown is 10 ounces of fat = 2,300 calories and 6 ounces of protein for 690 and 5 ounces of carbohydrates for 575. Total 3,565 per day at 21 ounces of weight. I have less packaging than most, because much of my food is not packaged. But 1.5lbs per day can cover your needs, if you can take a high fat diet, and some people cannot. Every ounce of fat, saves an ounce of weight, because it has twice the calories. Each person needs to dial in how much fat intact is acceptable and ensure proper digestion at that fat content. It does you no good if you pack a very high fat food and get diarrhea trying to bug out or get home. You must practice eating it first. I have way more old fashion foods, such as homemade pemmican and hardtack than others, coupled with some modern light items such as instant mashed potatoes. Most of my calories can be eaten on the move, but I have 3 meals that should be heated. Sometimes, you need that hot meal to function properly.

Ghee is a good source of fat that doesn't go rancid without refrigeration. I've always purchased Ramen noodles by caloric content. some are as much as 500cal per package. I read about an arctic expedition that for their final few days push to the pole ate nothing but butter dipped in sugar. They were on skis pulling sleds. nothing else at the time was calorie dense enough to provide the energy required for the out put.

Currently going thru this process. Time of yr also plays a part in food decision as I want food for winter months to be edible without being bricks or forced to leave inside inner pockets of jacket just to stay somewhat soft enough to eat.

Consider a travel bottle of olive oil (calorically dense) and meal replacement powders (high in nutrients/protein). The weight ratio of both to nutrients is pretty good.

1 of my favorite calorie dense foods that I've always got in my backpack is a pot of peanut butter. I'll scoop that right out with my dorky spork if I need a decent jolt of energy.

BTW, I went to that site you suggested regarding calories/density/weight of food. I thought I would mention his best Trial Mix. His own recipe. Equal parts dry roasted Macadamia Nuts, Dried Cherries and Almond M&Ms... Sounds good for a hiking snack.

This trick is common with ultralighters/thru-hikers. The same goes for your gear, why carry a 32 oz pot when you can carry a 8 oz pot of the same volume? The lighter your gear, the more food you can carry, but carry the best high cal food.

I've been writing a book on food for hiking/minuteman type activities for a bit over a year, and caloric density is only part of the equation. A weight conscious hiker can get away with a lot, but in non-permissive environments, I think preparation is perhaps the biggest factor. While backpacking, many of us tend to rely a lot on dehydrated foods, but when downrange its extremely unlikely that you'll have the luxury of pulling out your cooking gear and firing up a stove, both due to light discipline and time constraints. Sure, there are plenty of foods you can cold-soak, but that assumes you had the opportunity earlier in the day to start the process while ready to eat foods can be pulled out at a moment's notice, even during short breaks. Water for rehydration is another factor. Obtaining water in a non-permissive environment isn't as easy, and comes at a higher risk, than on the trail, so conserving it when feasible is important. Personally, I plan for only one dehydrated meal a day (which doesn't require a heat source or long soak) with the rest of my rations being ready to eat. It's not the most weight or volume efficient, but is better suited for my use case.

In a future video, I will show everyone what specific food I pack in a "get home/Bug out bag" type kit. Many of the things you mentioned are included, and we follow the same principles. I go over many of these principles in the food while patrolling video aswell. It's a different "mission" but fairly close. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CH7VIgWianM.html

@@PreparedAirman I look forward to seeing that video and enjoyed the patrolling video as well. Probably not to the extent as you have, but I too have spent years tweaking my gear and putting it to the test to find what works for me, and have a similar video and article planned discussing my "daily rations kits". Basically, similar to MREs, I pack a day's worth of food that takes minimal preparation, as well as chlorine tablets, toilet paper, daily medications, etc into a single bag. And all of it fits in half a gallon ziploc bag. It's not the slimmest package, but whether I'm going on a hike, or a worst case scenario, all my critical consumable needs are covered for an entire day per bag I pack.

Ever since I watched your original video talking about calorie density, it's something that I've paid attention to when packing food. It's a simple concept, and I'm very grateful that you did a video on it. However when I get to the grocery store, it becomes clear that there are other parameters in play. Price, volume, and nutritional value are each important. I tend to consider price most often, so that formula is "calories per ounces per dollar." When comparing two similar foods, dividing the cal/oz ratio of each by their respective price lets me easily judge what my weight savings are worth.

why does everyone think all calories are the same? the type of calories will also affect how much you get from them they are not all equal.

For a long-term situation, yes, absolutely. But realistically, a short term situation 72hrs it doesn't have a big concern of what type. The military is a great example of this.

@@PreparedAirman I just put 1.5kg emergency rations in my bug out bag for that reason. I use the ones from Convar in different flavors (some of them have more protein in it). I could add a bit of rolled oats or maybe some lineseeds to avoid problem with digestion. A bit protein powder could help giving me enough protein but like you said...in an emergency its the calories that count. Second most important is imho avoiding digestive problems. Its not fun trying to poop after not eating fibres for 3-4 days.
