Camelot, Act 2 Scene 1 ("If Ever I would Leave You", 1960) - Julie Andrews, Robert Goulet
--------------------------------
Many years later, Guenevere and Lancelot are still tormented by their unfulfilled love. She tries to get rid of him, but Lancelot will not leave her ("If Ever I Would Leave You"). They both believe that Arthur is not aware of it.
(Wikipedia)
------------------------------------
Queen Guenevere - Julie Andrews
Sir Lancelot - Robert Goulet
This is a mix of:
- Private Recording from 1961, supposedly Burtons last evening;
- some of the only taping of Camelot on The Ed Sullivan Show (DVD's);
- my copy of "Camelot" (Hardcover) and
- images of the play floating around.

Incredible. It’s like time traveling. The things we thought there was no record of have surfaced. Unreal.

Gosh... I'l be living vicariously through these Camelot Videos! I have loved the soundtrack but this in an exercise of imagination and dreaming about being there in first row! Listening to Julie delivering her lines is such a joy. And it's such a treasure to "reassure" how wonderful her voice was for musicals. Even speaking, there is a wonderful musicality about it. Nowadays, even when she's not singing, that musicality is still one of the highlights of her talents!

Thank you for posting. What a magical cast! I would have loved to have been in the theatre. But as that is impossible, I thank you for this video. Broadway as we will never see again. Just great singing and acting.

Thank you so much for posting this. I haven't heard that short madrigal before If Ever I Would Leave You in a long time. I was 8 years old when I heard Mr. Goulet sing this on Ed Sullivan and fell in love with his voice. I was supposed to be in bed but hearing him I snuck out in the hall to watch. He remains my favorite singer of all time. Mr. Goulet and Julie Andrews together were magical.

Can never be matched . What a magnificent cast / production. Beautiful absolutely stunning! I wish I could of been there for a performance. Shows now seem to have to make some kind of social or political statement. Very sad this kind of entertainment is virtually gone. Julie Andrews you are amazing, I have been a fan since I saw you in sound of music as a child. You are a treasure. Thank you for all that you have giving to bring joy to our lives.

I must admit I'd actually get more out of it if I could actually see him *and* her. Robert Goulet, standing by himself, singing, doesn't necessarily do as much for me as seeing them *both* act *together* would have done. That said. Robert Goulet was already an amazing talent all by himself anyway. Singing, acting, everything. The man had talent, for sure.

Someone sneaked a tape recorder into a performance? Who took Burton's place after he left the show?

Yes. William Squire took over as Arthur September 18th, 1961

@@Bigbadwhitecracker In the 1982 London revival with Richard Harris, William Squire was Merlyn. I have the cast recording where he can be heard in some of the dialogue. Stacy Keach is another former Arthur in the musical to have moved to the role of Merlyn (in the Lincoln Center concert performance).
