He's good, but Robert Goulet was much better. Nobody else sounded like him, so he had the edge. He also had the arrogance down perfectly. So arrogant he was funny. And Camelot needs that light touch. For the show to work, Lancelot has to be so impossibly beautiful from the moment he appears - he's made fun of, and we can understand why Arthur is worried and Guinevere is smitten. And it's not until this song that we start to fall in love with him too. This isn't 'swoony' enough.

Goulet owned this ballad during his career, but Jordan blew me away in the Camelot preview I attended two weeks ago. Unlike Goulet who “sang” the ballad, Jordan imbues every phrase with passion and emotion. His control of dynamics makes his performance unforgettable. This young man is destined for greatness and fame.

It's wonderful when young people, as talented as this young man want to dedicate their lives to keeping American musical culture alive for future generations. Of course, he's no Goulet--he was once in a lifetme. But we're fortunate that this young man wants this career and not one that would give him more fame and fortune. Let's thank him for his dedication to the real American musical cultural traditions.

We saw Jordan Donica at Carnegie Hall when we went to the Pops. We were there to see Melissa Errico and were totally blown away by Mr Donica, not realizing we loved his fabulous Freddy in My Fair Lady {recorded, sadly not in person}. He is even better in person, capturing our individual attention and singing directly to us way up in the absolute last row of Carnegie Hall. If we were further from the stage, we would have been on 47th, yet we were up close and personal with this brilliant artist. I can't wait to see him grow in his career.

Oh dear, here I am, stuck in the original cast recording (which I can, unfortunately for listeners!) sing from beginning to end, including humming the overture (I know, get a life...) . Donica has a wonderful, strong baritone, but I feel that this song needs to be sung with the hopeless yearning that Goulet infused into it--he doesn't know where he's going at first: summer? No. Autumn? Impossible! And finally the realization that he can never have her or leave her. But no Doubt, on stage, when Donica is in costume, being Lancelot, he'll get there--he certainly has the pipes to do it!

Goulet vs. Donica? The answer is simple. Goulet knew how to spin a legato line while still enunciating and expressing the words clearly. This man hasn't a clue. So many broken musical phrases to make one dramatic point or another. Doing one or the other is not so hard. Doing both at the same time? That's hard and clearly Mr. Donica hasn't learned this. He may not have the breath support or just doesn't know the real art of singing. This is very choppy. Is there no music director to correct this?

@@maureenajamie709 How nice for you and your daughters to be acquainted with a Tony Nominee! And, yes he does have a "marvelous voice". And, he is talented. I wish him and all the nominees luck. The fact remains, on evidence of this video, Mr. Donica needs work developing an ability to sustain long legato lines without breaking the musical line to emphasize words. This is hard to do. Both are important in a song like this!
