Cameras let you add different shot types to your scenes, from wide / medium /closeup stationary shots to animated zooms and pans. Character Animator also lets you add shots to triggers, so you can press buttons to switch between shots live. This tutorial walks through a sample scene and teaches the basics of setting up camera systems for both recorded and live workflows. Follow along with the free Linden & Robot example project at adobe.com/go/chexamples.

Cameras work great even in this initial implementation. Used them on my latest video instead of exporting to AE. The only other thing I could have asked for is the ability to add blur to the background when I went to the close-ups. But going forward I'll just create multiple backgrounds with different levels of blur.

Thanks for the update. Great work! I have two questions: 1. Any plans for a 3D camera? 2. If I add a camera in CA, can I take it in with all its animations into AE, and finesse the Camera movement there?
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 4 года назад
1. If enough people ask for a 3D camera we'll consider it! adobe-video.uservoice.com/forums/911317-character-animator 2. Currently when you dynamic link into AE there isn't any extra data you'll get - it essentially shows up as a piece of flat footage. We also hope to add more AE functionality here in the future (with this and other areas).

Excellent video! Any suggestions for how to step up camera functions if i want to be able to zoom in and out of the scene but have something (an iPhone battery icon) fixed at the top right corner? So I’d be able to zoom in and out on the scene but the icon stays fixed
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 3 года назад
Hmmm good question. The camera kind of takes over the scene and will adjust everything inside of it. So you might be better off exporting or dynamic linking into Premiere Pro or After Effects and adding those elements there. The other option is putting your scene inside another scene and adding the elements there.

I have a challenge...make a crouched character walk on all fours, then, stand up...I used walk on each limb to get 4 legged walking, however, I can't then firmly plant the feet to stand up
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 4 года назад
That sounds tricky, yeah. Your best best might be to tag the limbs as draggers with "hold in place" selected and pose the character by dragging each limb in place. Gene from adobe.com/go/chexamples has a bunch of draggable parts, so you can see how you could pose him in different positions. But draggables are susceptible still to head movements, so without fixed handles it might be difficult to feel like the character is still on the ground, and posing and recording like this can be cumbersome. Hopefully we can make better workflows around this in the future.
@ViralKiller
@ViralKiller 4 года назад
@@okaysamurai thanks..It would be awesome to have the ability to lock feet to the ground, and then a jump system where the feet leave the ground with toes off last...2 and 4 legged walking, and somehow switch between all these seamlessly. Hi Dave! Is a feature enabling multiple buttons for trigger in the roadmap? Ex: let's say 1 is the button triggering the left arm of a character, and 2 for his right arm trigger. An ideal workflow for two characters named A and B would be to move A's left arm with A+1, B's left arm with B+1, A's right arm with A+2 and B's right arm with B+2

Dave... once you've created various scenes how can you figure out what their original X, Y, and ZOOM parameters were set at? So I have a closeup trigger and an ultra closeup trigger but then I want to create another trigger that is a slow zoom from the closeup to ultra closeup being sure that the start and finish up the zoom are the same parameters as the original triggers? I can't figure this one out.
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 4 года назад
That's tough - because once something is turned into a replay, it will only record to the timeline as a take, not keyframes. Another option once you have all your triggers set is to make one the default in the swap set, and then it will always defer to that instead of the current scene settings. I only recommend doing that once you set up all your shots though or it gets confusing during setup.

Hello. I am having issues with dynamic link. I got very far editing multiple char animator scenes in after effects. I split some of the scenes in after effects and edited extensively. My problem is some scenes freezing within after effects. I am using multiple scenes from different character animator projects could that be the issue? Should all scenes be in one project? If so can I move scenes from one character animator project to the other?

I have a question about multiple animations and camera system within project. For example think of having a podcast of two people. I want the project where I can have a wide shot of two people talking and individual shots focused on each one as if each person is looking at the camera. So total 3 shots: 1 wide, 1 character A shot, and character B shot. But as of right now , I feel like I will have to create three different projects for each different angle and export it and edit the parts. Ideally I wanna able to live stream with the different camera angle as described above.
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 2 года назад
I think you could totally do this with just one project - just set up camera held keyframes like I show at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8ZdnGazWtq4.html, and basically switch between those keyframes for each of your three shots. But if you want to do anything more special, like different views for the character or a shifting background/foreground, maybe making three scenes would be better. Your call!

Thank you! Woody

Unfortunately I think the camera takes over the whole scene - we did this because user testing showed people got confused otherwise. I think if you're starting to get to that level of compositing you may want to dynamic link your character and do it in After Effects of Premiere Pro for more control over individual elements.

@@okaysamurai got it - thanks. One other question / issue I'm having. I've set up triggerable shots for the scene camera and I control the shot by inserting a 2-frame take directly on the timeline and then stretching the bar as needed. However, the camera sometimes jumps in a way that's inconsistent with the timeline: i.e., I'll have 'mid view' on the timeline but it will jump to 'full view' even though the the scene it still show's 'mid view' on the timeline. I don't see anything else on the timeline that would explain this switch in views. Any suggestions for what might be causing this? Thank you!
@okaysamurai

If you turn off the red dot next to the camera in the timeline, does that help? It may be that the camera is looking for new data by being "armed" but setting this off may help show the correct way. How do I toggle between Camera 1 and Camera 2 during recording? I can't find an answer to this anywhere. Basically, I just want to toggle back and forth between two cameras. Having the hardest time finding out how. Or maybe there is a better way to do this? I have two cameras on the timeline. Each gradually zooms in on a different character. I just want to toggle this between the two cameras back and forth over 30 seconds or so.
@shrimptastic-life
@shrimptastic-life 3 года назад
So apparently there is no way to toggle between the cameras, nor is there a way to ctrl-k the camera scenes on the timeline like you might do in Audition. I'm wondering what point is to having more than one scene camera if you can't toggle to it, but... I am still very new at this. Maybe there is something else I'm missing. I solved my issue by using keyframes to change the shot, over and over, and over again. It works, but it leaves me feeling there must be or should be a better way. (Think that one old meme of Shaq wiggling and the cat wiggling, the cameras each have a gradual zoom and it toggles back and forth between Shaq and the cat. No that's not what I did, haha, but that's the theme I was going for. ) Anyway, I hope this helps someone out who may be trying to do the same thing. :)
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 3 года назад
So yeah, honestly I think keyframes is the best way to do what you're asking to do. You can created triggered shots, where you press a button to make a shot start, but it can create some really confusing issues in the timeline when you're trying to wrap your head around cameras and triggers - personally I think triggered cameras only really work for live stuff. For recordings, keyframes is probably your best bet to make things precise.

So, I am a seasoned professional cinematographer/director that utilizes in-camera shallow DOF (Depth of Field) and DOF techniques in narrative, non-character animation videos and am learning animation for a short project. Is there a way to change the Depth of Field within Character Animator to bring attention to a particular puppet in a close up. In essence, re-creating what the viewer is accustomed to seeing in a real life narrative story when the DP/Director decides to punch in from a wide lens to, say, a 50mm lens which blurs the background and keeps the actor (puppet) in focus. I want to give my animation an extra layer of traditional 'language of film.' Thanks in advance.
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 4 года назад
Yes, you can do this, but not in Character Animator yet - for this kind of thing I go for After Effects. I talk about this in the "Cameras" section of ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VhCKD5vl848.html - there's a part where I blur some foreground elements, and you could use that same technique for backgrounds or other stuff. In fact, the built in AE cameras do have a depth of field option that might better suit your level of expertise in this area!

Could you demonstrate on how to utilize easing between Camera shots, i.e., slow zoom from CU to a Wide Shot? When I try I can't figure out if ease the Zoom it appears to be zooming 'off center' . Is because I am having the puppet walk on to screen to a certain mark? I walk the character on from scene right, with Camera on triggered shot "WS" wide shot, i pause his walking when he hits his 'mark' on the scene and then I just want to perform triggered cameras for WS, MS, or CU..then have the puppet walk off the screen. Seems pretty simple but...thanks
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 3 года назад
The character should have no bearing on how the camera acts. I think the issue is with triggered shots - if you have triggered shots, it can lead to complicated situations where you're not sure if you're looking at a trigger or not (if triggers are armed). This is why I suggest limiting triggered shots for live productions and sticking to keyframes for recorded cameras. I think the keyframe approach will solve your issues.

On the other note for example the walkbot im making a movie with the puppets but some puppets cant move arms is there a way to make arms or costum legs movable? And is there a way to make them hold a object? Are u having any tutorials on those? Your tutorial got me into adobe character and it was the best decision ever to buy the software your a great help to make my dream come true! Ill wait for your awnser:)

Yes - with the walk behavior - see ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gv_2Upvtm-M.html - if you tag an arm with the shoulder, elbow, and wrist, it will move with walking animations. If you don't want it to move, don't add those tags. For holding objects, I recommend adding triggers, like Sirr has with his marshmallow stick on okaysamurai.com/puppets.

The walk tutorial I showed above is the best tutorial for making a walking character, but there are more basic character creation tutorials at adobe.com/go/chtutorials.

Can I blur background in Adobe Ch ??

Not currently. I would either do that in Photoshop in pre-production or After Effects in post.

I just can’t believe that you cannot create a key frame where the playhead is without having to adjust the values. You should be able to position the camera and then click a button. Same with triggers and replays.

You can - click the hollow diamond to the left of the timeline (Just like After Effects and Premiere).

My camera gets disconnected everytime

Nothing in CH should be disconnecting your camera - I would try closing all other apps that might be taking camera focus. If the problem persists, please upload a screenshot to the official forums at adobe.com/go/chfeedback so we can take a closer look.

Even the free example file? If not you may need to update to a newer version.

@@okaysamurai There seems to be a bug perhaps, if I use the scrollwheel without holding the ctrl key then the zooming with the camera does work, but if I hold the ctrl key + scrollwheel (which is what I usually use) it doesn't work.
