I cut and glued foam into a 50 cal ammo can for my dslr and lenses. It also fits my mavic air really well. That wouldn’t go in a kayak very comfortably, but on the raft i feel really good about it. Unfortunately, a lot of places I boat are no drones. So I need to find some other river sections to boat. My advice to buying a drone is to rent one until you figure out exactly how much you’ll use it. I don’t use my drone nearly as much as I imagined.
The panasonic gh5 is hands down the best camera for high quality video and slow motion. And it's very durable and fairly cheap in comparison. A lot of the pros out there making videos are using the gh5
Good video. I have more than 100 days of use of my iPhone in my PFD, without any form of waterproofing. The only time I ever had an issue, was with an unknown crack (under the case), it made the camera lens fog up for a few days. Since the screen was replaced, zero issues. All late model iPhones are waterproof. I would advise having a good case and screen protector. Super convenient - just don’t drop it!!
I used to love my GoPro Hero 3, but I dropped it in the Everglades when I took it out of my PFD to take a video of some alligators, so I highly recommend some type of floaty for smaller action cameras. Also if anyone ever goes fishing in the Everglades, let me know😂
Just got a Sony A7IV after 20 years of shooting with Nikon and I'm excited to use it out on the river. It still feels a little surprising how small it is every time I pick it up. My Mavic Air 2 “fly more package” came with a pretty solid bag and I am impressed with it. Normally OEM stuff like that is awful, but it's very compact, has fitted high density foam, and fits great in my Watershed's. Not sure what lens to pick up for the A7, debating between the new Tamron 35-150 f/2 and a good ol 24-70 2.8.
I frequently forget to take pictures on river trips because I'm so "in the moment", which I why I'm grateful when my friends do. For longer trips, I try to encourage someone to be the dedicated photographer/videographer. You can free up that person from other tasks to document the trip for others. Because they know that's their role, they'll do a much better job than will a casual photographer. One additional point: A lot of river sections have rules prohibiting drones. These include the Canyon and the Wilde and Scenic Rogue. People should check local regulations before using one.
