This has got to be my favorite episode of your channel ever. That house is so amazing! I can't even imagine how much work went into creating all of that, but the result is spectacular. And I really love how every single animal has a beautiful naturalistic and spacious enclosure. Yes I absolutely wish the reptile industry was more regulated in the US. I know it's a hassle for people, but I think ensuring the welfare of the animals and helping to protect native wildlife from poaching and introduced species is worth a bit of paperwork.

Such a good guy putting all of his time and effort into building amazing exclosures to try his best to make these reptiles as comfortable as possible in captivity and i can tell her genuinely cares about these creatures and he tries to teach people how to save money and care for these properly.

Brilliant episode, Dav. I think the whole Lacey act scandal could have been circumvented with a system similar to the Ozzie's. If people needed a license to own a Burm or Retic and perhaps there was a chipping program like when someone adopts a dog, I think it'd solve everyone's problems.
@davkaufmansreptileadventures
@davkaufmansreptileadventures 9 лет назад
Marky's Herps Great comment. Perhaps a voluntary chipping program isn't a bad idea regardless of any law?

that cockatoo with the can killed me, hahah I have to say, that´s one of the most awesome homes I´ve ever seen! Damn, I´m jealous.. And yes, I think that a permit system like in Australia would be a good Idea, that way, people would think about it, before getting any kind of reptile, so this prevents impulse buyers and helps people to get a sense of the caring requirements for their desired reptile. This may help people as well as animals, because, at least in my opinion, it will lower de number of unwanted reptiles, which get released or are taken to animal shelters,... There is something similar to that system here in Austria for dogs. You have to have a kind of license, before you are able to get a dog.
@davkaufmansreptileadventures
@davkaufmansreptileadventures 8 лет назад
+Manuel Paschinger And the coolest thing about that cockatoo was that he was a wild bird that just starting hanging around his house!
@harddobe
@harddobe 4 года назад
There are three main reasons for the licence and permit system. 1. To keep track of animals bred and owned to stop smuggling. 2. To try and make sure people arnt taking animals from the wild, and to make sure its all captive bred. 3. To keep an idea of what animals are where. If you only want one animal, be it a bird, reptile etc, then you dont need a licence.

Absolutely the u.s should have a permit system there are far too many people (not just kids) who dont know what they are doing and don't take the time to learn and do research before choosing a reptile. Most aren't prepared for the commitment of essentially having a baby you have to prepare food for and care for as you would a child and unfortunately there are some things that you only learn with time and experience such as illness symptoms and warning signs for our little friends who might be sick.

Really our system of keepin reptiles works well. Basicly the licence just requires you to document where you buy animals from and where you sell them to. As a result if anyone accuses you of catching things from the wild you've got proof of where the animal came from
@davkaufmansreptileadventures
@davkaufmansreptileadventures 7 лет назад
I would agree. But I don't think it would work well in the US even though it may solve a lot of issues.
@WickedWildlife
@WickedWildlife 7 лет назад
The Reptile Channel - HerpersTV totally It's a system that really only works if it's installed at the beginning of the hobby. Now there would be no way to track down what everybody owns over there to start the licence Also it seems like with all the exotics and morphs poaching is less of an issue there?

@BeholdItKnits
@BeholdItKnits 4 года назад
It's good and I don't know why any true animal lover would think otherwise. Look at what's happened with Cane Toads in Australia for example. We now have several reptiles (Mitchells water monitor, fe) on the critically endangered list all because a non-native species was introduced into the environment. Or take Burmese Pythons in Florida. You're going to possibly lose endemic species to SE USA all because some selfish thoughtless human wanted to keep a non-native animal as a pet. There are thousands of examples of this happening all over the world. It ruins ecosystems and causes extinctions. The permit requirement is also useful in that it dissuades fairweather pet-owners, people who purchase animals they're not capable of caring for, and people who impulse buy.

Lol.I was so fascinated I watched it 2 times back to back. I think all of us that have the passion for these animals strive to be as good as a keeper as he is.and as far as having to get a license for a bearded dragon or any other non venomous reptile the u.s gov can kiss my grits. ;)

Licensing: yes, if it is done intelligently. People who buy reptiles and don't look after them shouldn't be allowed to keep them - as with all animals. I was so impressed by Israel's laws to protect its reptiles as explained in another of your videos. If only other countries would enact similar legislation......

In my opinion, while Australia has its reasons, I think the permit system is too much for other countries to follow. What I find fascinating though is that they only allow native species while other countries only allow non-native species.

id say australias system is a bit too crazy (no animals in no animals out). but the idea that ur customers have to get a permit and every animal that gets bred and sold gets noticed is cool. Also the idea that not anyone can purcase a hot snake is great. here in Germany every 16 year old can buy a king cobra- no regulations whatsoever (at least in certain parts of Germany like nrw). we had so often cases in the news were stoned teenies lost their cobras or bs like this. it hurts our hobby. i wouldnt mind to have the control we have on wa1 animals with wa2 and non wa animals as well (ok- minus the export and import stuff)
@davkaufmansreptileadventures

@WickedWildlife
@WickedWildlife 7 лет назад
The Reptile Channel - HerpersTV unfortunately the system (at least here in Victoria) doesn't stop people getting animals they arnt ready for) but it does ensure everything is captive born and covers your own arse if your ever accused of poaching. Other then having to write where animals come from and go to there isn't much involved

Didn't the government introduce the Cane Toad in the first place to eat a beetle? Is it the Cane beetle? We have dog tags and licenses but it doesn't go as far as to where you got your dog from. For us to have a law like that is overkill, Maybe for big snakes, venomous, or monster monitors, but for small things say under 24" I don't see it as a big deal.
@davkaufmansreptileadventures

Granby Reptile This is true and it's one of the reasons why Australia is critical of its quarantine measures today.
@mitchelljohnson3807
@mitchelljohnson3807 7 лет назад
Granby Reptile in Australia we have a major problem with feral animals, we have camels and water buffalo causing a lot of damage to native wildlife in areas where that can never recover, not mention feral pigs, deer, cats, dogs, rabbits, foxes and goats which have cause almost half of our wildlife is be classed as endangered. the permit system works well due to both our population begin small and ensuring that animals are not bred and released for no valid reason however I don't believe that our system would work for America or other larger populated countries

In wa we have categories 1 through 5 in cat 1 cant own anything and then the difficulty goes up along with the cat. And in Wa you can only on WA species. Its important that we only own our own species because of the amazing and exclusive animals we have in australia and we dont want the eco system to be destroyed any further. I think its great that we dont import or export reptile or really any animals its protecting the natural ecosystems around the world from irresponsible owners. And licensing only gets complicated if you own a tonne and are breeding them. If you only want to own a couple reptules its a single fee each year and some paperwork. I dont think it will work in other parts of the world because its too far gone to fix the damage
