We return with another episode of Will it camp?
Rohann and I went camping with his Gen 3 Suzuki Jimny called Oubaas to see how practical his setup is. Now of course this vehicle is ready for camping, that is what it was built for, but nevertheless, we set out to see how his setup works and how practical it is.
We made our way to Kromrivier Farm near Riviersonderend. It was a scorcher of a day and we arrived a bit early at camp, so to waste time, we drove up a section of the 4x4 route to test his suspension and tyre setup. After the scenic drive, we returned to camp. The Jimny is a pretty small vehicle, so packing space was limited. It was like a game of Jenga. The vehicle had to be packed pretty precisely whilst using the smallest and most compact gear we had, even with the draw system in place. The awning was great to have on this trip, providing us with the needed shade on this hot day. The Dometic fridge kept our beers cold and Rohann braaied as a great dinner that night!
The engine of the Jimny is stock standard and with the larger wheels and added weight, it is a bit underpowered when needing to climb hills, but it will still get you to your destination (eventually) and beyond with how capable Jimnys are. The replacement front bumper and rock sliders protect the vehicle when offroading and the roof rack for extra storage space. Jimny's also don't come with diff-lock and that could be a slight issue when doing axle twisting routes, but with the right wheel placement and driving experience, this issue could be negotiated. All in all, the Jimny is most definitely a great adventure vehicle and will easily take you to most campsites in South Africa without any worries.
