Minn Kota Powerdrive V2 55lb Thrust w/ I-Pilot - amzn.to/2Vu6drD
Can a 55 pound thrust trolling motor run a 24 ft pontoon?
Yes it can! In this video I show you how my Minn Kota Powerdrive v2 55 lb thrust trolling motor handles my 24 foot pontoon. I frequently use iPilot which provides a GPS anchor for my boat while striper fishing. Works fantastic! i-Pilot is amazing!

@BooneDownSouth
@BooneDownSouth 3 года назад
Hanna Myers - It really depends on what you want to. In my case I didn't want to deal with dual batteries and have to wire all that because I wanted the trolling motor portable because I didn't want it on the boat when we were not fishing. I would consider all options and determine what is best for you. This video was mainly to show you that a 55lb thrust will power a 24 ft pontoon in most conditions without problems. You also have to take into consideration, how far and how long you will need to run the motor.

@BooneDownSouth
@BooneDownSouth Год назад
So my pontoon boat weight is 2315. That is the weight of the boat only. That is the only specs I can find on it. So its definitely a good bit lighter than what you have. However, being a deck boat you don't have as much drag from pulling logs through the water like you do on a pontoon, so not sure how it would do for you.

@BooneDownSouth
@BooneDownSouth 3 года назад
Well I know the I-pilot head was specific to certain models of minn kota trolling motors so the best thing to do would be to check with minn kota to see what is supported where. I don't remember what the cost was at this point, that was a few years back but I know it wasn't cheap.

@BooneDownSouth
@BooneDownSouth Год назад
Yea I would think that would be fine. I mean it really depends what you want. Bigger is usually better, but I really didn't want to go the route of 2 batteries to deal with and it turns out the 55 pound thrust works fine with my 24 ft. I do some catfishing like that as well and use that same trolling motor. Also when I am striper fishing, I am using that motor continuously to keep me in place as a digital anchor. I really have not had any issues with this setup.

How fast can you troll with a couple of friends with the 55 lb thrust motor? What all up weight, boat and people, do you usually troll with? Thanks
@BooneDownSouth
@BooneDownSouth 5 лет назад
D Wayne It really depends on what I am doing. If I am just bass fishing and moving along the bank I like a slow troll. There is a speed setting of 1 - 10 on the remote and I usually troll around 2-3. When I am fishing like that its not uncommon to have 2-3 adults and a couple teenagers. When I am striper fishing I am usually using the anchor feature. In that scenario its almost always 2-3 adults and 3-4 teenagers. I am using the anchor feature to keep the boat directly above the fish. If I am not productive that way and want to troll my bait I will try to troll about 1.5 mph for stripers. I don't know what the top speed is on it, but for what I do it works great. Not sure on the weight but I have a 24' fish and ski model pontoon with 115hp mercury on the back. This also includes a 35 gallon bait tank full of water and bait which will add another couple hundred pounds as well. Hope that helps!

do you fish with baits on bottom? I have a 18 ft bass buggy and am adding a trolling motor this spring. I mainly walleye fish but I do go sturgeon fish and catfish 4-5 times a year would the anchor mode hold well enough to keep a bait on bottom in moderate current?
@BooneDownSouth
@BooneDownSouth 5 лет назад
It does for me. If you watch my video on Striper Fishing in Lake Hartwell I was using live bait about 95 ft deep for some of those catches. I was about 5 feet off the bottom. Would love to catch a big sturgeon. I bet that is a blast!

What I'm looking for is a backup plan for those days I'm on the water and there's no one else and My gas motor want start for some reason. Would a 55LB get my 24 footer back to boat ramp? I usually stay within 2 miles of a Ramp.
@BooneDownSouth
@BooneDownSouth 5 лет назад
Charlie that's a tough one to answer. When I am striper fishing I cut the motor and I do a lot of trolling with this motor to locate the striper, but I can't say I have pushed it for 2 miles. When I go bass fishing its pretty much trolling the whole time - I just don't know the distance I have trolled. My battery has never gone below 75% when I have been out but I just don't know about that. It's going to depend on wind and current too. If your goal is for a backup for your gas motor then I would probably go with a 24 volt system. I think that would be safer for your needs.

There is a u bolt type of thing that runs through the mount and the mounting plate with a cotter pin. Pull the pin, pull the u bolt and up pops the motor. Now having said that you will need to drill the holes slightly larger on this model or else it will be super tight. I have a mount on my bass tracker and on my pontoon and move the motor between both of them.
