Can A Charvel DK24 Sound Like A Strat? Gear used: Charvel DK24 Shell Pink Kemper Fender Bassman TC Electronic Flashback Delay used as a looper Thanks for watching Leave a Comment & Like & Subscribe Instagram - / sp_musicig
Am I the only one who thinks it actually sounds better than a Strat?? Cleaner, clearer, more bell-like....still lovely and lush. ...Is there noone who dares speak against the supremacy of Fender..??
I love the sound of Strats put people are too purist. Just because a Strat sound great doesn't mean improvement is impossible. I prefer the sound of the neck pickup moved closer to the bridge because of the extra frets. The bass strings gain a bit of clarity. The in between positions give up a bit of the out of phase sound because the pickups are closer together but that can be an improvement.
Nah, muted and a blank slate that leaves it for amps and effects to create the tone, like all superstrats and guitars without distinct identities. As opposed to fenders that sound good with minimal stuff tacked on.
@@5000rgb it's probably because of the iconic records that have that neck and in between sound of strat. It's very distinct and recognisable. Does it mean it is the best? Not necessarily tbh. I've upgraded my own strat and I decided to put neck humbucker and it is very dark. I had to mess with the pickup height to actually get a usable sound and even with that I only use it on the higher strings. I think on a 24 fret guitar it's a lot more usable.
Wow! These tones sold me on it. That pink is really growing on me too. Getting one as soon as I can find one in stock on a site I like. Great playing and thanks for not just cranking the gain.
I have a model 3 which is just so much fun to play. And no, it doesn't sound like a strat either! Thanks - really enjoyed the chance to hear this one sing.
When he hit open E 6th string, it didn't sound like a strat, at about 4:40. Maybe it has active pickups, + I don't have a clue which pickups he was using.
@@spmusicig you are so welcome and i just picked up the lime green Charvel w/carmel neck !! ( BASS ) going crazy waiting on it to arrive ?? stay in touch my friend !!
Right at 4:40 when you hit the open E it did not sound like a strat, possibly if you'd have wacked it a bit harder, but I don't think so , the sound wasn't there. The rest of seemed close. A good whack on open 6th string with some overdrive tells all when it comes to a good bell-tone, strat sound.
My friend has a theory that a 24 fret guitar can never sound like a strat. I don’t know how that makes sense but he seems to be right so far. I’ve never heard a 24 fret guitar sound like a strat.
The pick-up postion makes great difference for the tone, it is hard for an usual 24 frets guitars to reproudce the sound of the traditional strat, especailly the neck tone.
After setting my DK24 up, it's really fantastic but it's not a strat, it's a super strat; completely different level by Fender! I'll admit that they cut corners on the setup of these rigs so expect to do it yourself! It's claw had to be set to 14-15mm from the inside of body for the bridge to float leveled. I would love to have it's HH pickups alittle closer to the strings but they're set screws.
I've got both a Dinky24 and a Dinky22 Charvel. By themselves, I don't notice any difference between my memory of a Strat and the charvel. When I switch between the Dk24 and the dk22, there is an incredible difference between both guitars in feel and sound. Also, I hate fenders; Strats and Tele's - the neck radius and pickups ande the sound. However, the Charvels Dinkys are incredible guitars for the price.
@@chemo86 Between the two guitars, there is to me an incredible difference in feel because of the 2 extra frets. If I want to stay in a Stratty mood, I use the 22 fret Charvel, and if I want to go more towards the rock side, I'll switch to the 24 fret Charvell. The 22 fret feels like an incredible playing Strat. [ The Charvell has a 12 to 16 compound radius fingerboard ] The 24 has the same neck, however, the feel is tighter. In both guitars, they come from the factory with SSD SSL6 single coils. Sound wise on the 22 fret Charvell, the neck pickup is pure Strat gold. The 24 fret model has a slighly tigher [ 22 fret Charvell - SSL6, SSL6, SD Hot Rails, 24 fret SSL6, SSL6, SD Sh5 Custom ] I hated the orginal pickup [ SD Full Shred ] and installed the SH5 Custom. I use the 24 fret Charvell in the 2, 4 and bridge positions of the selector switch. The differences between the 22 and 24 fret: a. Different bridge pickups - hot Rails vs the SD Full Shred pickup. 2. 2 more frets on the same length neck. The necks have the same length and same radius. Get the specs on the Charvell web site
Nice tone, but not quite as ear pearcing as a strat, I could tell because my tinnitus didn’t act up like it usually does with the metal-fork-scratching-a-plate sound of a real strat
Was checking out the Gold Charvel like this recently, keep thinking about it. Never played a Charvel or seen one in person, any thoughts on fretwork? Are these made in USA or somewhere else? I think the one I saw online was around $1k, normally when I spend that much or more on a guitar I like to get ones where they factory PLEK like G&L or Gibson, had too many imports over the years that require higher action than desired to have clean sounding notes throughout the neck and still tend to find a few trouble spots.
Liked the look of the gold one when they showed it at NAMM20. The neck is thin which I prefer over all the other guitars I own and the fretwork is spot on, there can be issues with the paintwork around the pickups as it's a matte finish so I would suggest getting a close look at them, they are made in Mexico but I've played USA built guitars that dont play as good as my charvel. Thanks for watching, let me know how it goes👍
ElDuderino if it helps, I also own one and it is flawless. And this comes from a guy that has custom shop guitars and the charvel is unbelievable at this price point. But I heard that it’s also a luck thing with the charvels made in mexico. I usually am lucky and anything that I buy is very good. But I have friends that had problems with the same guitars.
SP Music mostly in the single coil pickups. I think the reason superstrats were invented in the 80’s were because people wanted to mix Gibson humbucking power with Fender single coil snap and add even more features to that
I like to think of it as a "megastrat". Megastrat is a term I came up with to describe guitars that are doing the Fender Strat general thing, but improve things more generally for high quality, rather than the straight up balls-to-the-wall upgrades of a superstrat. Other examples include a lot of Musicman guitars...the Luke..the Stingray. Also Suhr guitars. But I don't mean just a Strat made to a really high quality - I mean, alterations... improvements must have been made to the original design..again, like the contoured neck heel joint, or the satin finish, the dinky size body. But alterations that increase the general quality of the guitar, and not just the high performance. They can still improve things for performance (i.e. contoured neck heel), but high quality supercedes high performance. Or should I say "mega-cedes"... I'll show myself out...!
After scouring the internet relentlessly this last week on what guitar I should buy with my limited budget of 1000 dollars, this is my choice. For the money, you can’t beat it. The sound, the quality, in this price range is amazing. I’m not paying a 1000 dollars for a stepchild of a flagship guitar. If I can’t buy a real fender, then I won’t.
@@daidiary4748 One way to look at this is that the neck pickup is sort of halfway where the middle pickup normally would be, so it sounds halfway between a neck and a middle pickup on a Strat. If placement didn't affect the sound, then the bridge pickup would sound the same as the neck pickup, and obviously it doesn't.
I would be so bold and say it sounds better! I have this same guitar, and I love comparing it to my dads strat! So alike yet so different! I love both.
It should sound exactly like a strat. An HM strat. That's basically what is. It's somewhat better constructed than the originals and definitely better than the recent reissues. If it's not quite close enough for you, just swap the pickups out and save the money you'd pay for a drastically overpriced Kemper or the like. Sure, they're great but, like everything else, they pray on your ego. They live quite well while you either work multiple jobs, sell other gear, beg and borrow or worse just to have a box full of knobs, switches, lights and software that you really don't need. There are plenty of much more affordable options which sound just as good, if not better and, if you know how to use your gear, that's all you'll ever NEED. Especially in your bedroom or even at some local gig where the audience is comprised of people on their way to alcohol and chemically induced oblivion who are, at least at the moment, incapable of distinguishing a Strat from a banjo and only focused on swapping lies, chasing barflys. They only really notice the band long enough to yell "Freebird" or "Clapton". Even while attempting to dance. Of course, it's your money. Yours and granny's anyway. Lol
I had a kemper. And know for a fact it's killing the tone of this demo. Clearly less experienced commenters don't have the ear to delineate the dead kemper tone from making judgements on the Charvel. Critical reviewing guitar tone on a kemper is by amateurs for amateurs. No offense just facts. That kemper sounds awful and the Charvel is a lush sounding guitar.
The profile is JN Fender 59 Bassman by Johnny Navarro and I think it was free from the rig exchanger. What guitar do you have? Let me know how it goes👍Thanks for watching
@@spmusicig I have a Kiesel Osiris O6X, which I special ordered in HSS configuration, then had them wire it the same way as the Charvel with neck/S bridge in Position 3. Of course, after I have had the guitar for a month or so, Kiesel came out with a 22-fret Headless Delos, go figure. Thanks for the Profile, I'll hunt around for it!
@@marzzz1 No problem! Kiesel are making some unbelievable guitars, I have been close to ordering one myself but there are no retailers where I'm from so I'm not sure how the necks play. Looks like you may have to order the Delos aswell lol👍
@@spmusicig Finally got around to downloading the profile- I love clean tones, and this one is superb! Will continue to play around with it for awhile, but it has already been favorited. Holding off buying any guitars for now...!
I say, no, but it’s a really great guitar if you can’t afford several guitar. I would say a Charvel comes closer to a Gibson than a Strat. Great playing and beautiful guitar!
I find funny how we always try to make a guitar sound like a strat but we just cant. I love those charvels but we cant really make em sound like a strat
I have seen the Anderton's (Chappers & Captain) video about Charvel's multiple pickup configurations and the HSS on position 1, did sound like a strat. I could not tell the difference. I think SP Music put too much effects for this demo perhaps
I have only really heard of the tremol-no system to block the terms off but have never used one. I have heard of tuning stability issues with the charvels but I havent really experienced any worse condition than a standard strat, seems to be pretty solid. You could always have a floyd fitted but would require some modifications to the body and neck👍
@@spmusicig don't get me wrong, it was beautiful, the action came a little high for me, but other than that it was great, really nice to hold, crazy comfy access, the neck finish was perfect, the neck radius was nice but a little flat for me but that's just a taste thing, the bridge was amazing, but for some reason had a short spring behind the A string saddle, never had that on a gotoh before. The jack placement was soooo cool though, I'm gonna miss that on basically every guitar that isn't it. Might go for dimarzio true velvets in my neck/mid in my next one because I know they have that stratty sound also might go 22 fret for the tone moneyshot.
@@666dreamboat Jack placement is a genius design! Its my first 24 fret, when I play my other guitars I have to remember it stops at 22 haha but if Charvel came out with a roasted flame maple with a white body I'd buy that in an instant.
@@spmusicig I know sire made a roasted neck white finish and they are known for being pretty amazing so I may try one of them when it's possible to get them in the UK. Their single coil pickups have a really nice chime too so I guess I'm sold on it now. rip bank account.
@@aaronmaiden3606 ok you got that right but I didn’t know the amount of frets go into it. Figured it attributes to scale length tho so I’m not surprised
Yeah because your "friend" told you. You said that on the other video. That's ridiculous. Your friend is wrong. I guarantee you nor 'your friend' could tell the difference in moving the single coil a couple mm when playing a solo in a blind test. Guarantee it. Strings, amp, would make a world more difference. Hell different strats make more difference. Your friend is quoting a distortion of a myth. And fyi 24 fret makes more difference with moving a HUMBUCKER because they are wider and have to move more. Blind ab test on a hss. Sorry mate uou misunderstood your mate talking about humbucker or your mate is ignorant
The Charvel is NOT a Strat & I don't think it was ever MEANT to be! It's got her own thing goin' on. Just like tryin' to compare my RG Series Ibanez & a Strat together, it just doesn't work! They're both products of different eras, & are approaching the music from different directions. Today it's more about the sound you're looking for, what do you want the guitar to do? That & personal choice or preference.
@@spmusicig all the reviews that I have watched about this guitar they all have one thing in common that the neck pickup is the only thing they would change/upgrade on this guitar. But I believe that you make a good job with it.
Great playing dude, this guitar has it's own sound tbh. There are always going to be the idiots who are going to say, oh it's a kemper that's why it sounds diff. It's almost like the two extra frets change the sound of the whole guitar. These clowns are exactly the type of people who play trash dad blues with out of time bends through some expensive vintage inspired gear and think they know what they're talking about. If only they spent some time actually playing the thing.
WHY would you want to have a Charvel sound like a Strat?????....YOU WANT a Strat to sound like a Charvel.....that's the reason Charvel went in business
