Can a regular person drive an F1 car? Say tomorrow we took you to track and presented a modern F1 car to you, could you do a few laps? Would you even be able to pull away? Or would you take Lewis’ seat for next year?
I used to work on events with Lotus F1, now Alpine F1, where we’d put people who’d never been on track, in a 2012 F1 car.
But what I really want to talk about is, how difficult is it for a non-racing driver to drive an F1 car? What are the biggest challenges and how far are they off the pace?

Back before I started Driver61, I was racing and coaching - and one of the jobs I had was working with Winfield Racing School, based at Paul Ricard in France.
They work with the Alpine F1 team to put on probably the best driving experience in the world - driving a 2012 Lotus F1 car. That’s the car that Kimi drove when he did his “leave me alone” speech before going on to win in Abu Dhabi.
The F1 team would bring their sponsors and guests to drive the car - most of whom had never touched a race car, let alone driven an F1 car.
Me and my fellow coaches worked with people like David Croft, Seen Through Glass and Mr JWW and Matt from WTF1, among many other non-racers. It was one of the most amazing automotive adventures, getting to drive a real F1 car.
Imagine that, being invited to drive an F1 car for the first time. From what I could tell, they felt equal measures of excitement and nervousness. I actually spoke to Matt Creed who took part in the programme a few years ago, having only ever done a few driving experiences on track previously.
We’d give guests a briefing and a couple of sighting laps before strapping them into an F4 car - the first step in a very steep learning curve for them: 160 horsepower, 570 kilograms, full-slicks and wings. They’re quicker around a circuit than most hypercars, but actually, a good car to learn the ropes in.

If given a choice to do 10 laps in an F1 car like this or an entire day with an actual F1 driver in karts I'd chose the kart experience.

@@Max_Snellink I get what your saying. I’ve driven both Ferraris and Lamborghinis and for me it’s about the experience. Something I can tell the grandchildren in years to come. They’re not going to be impressed if I say I went karting 😂

I imagine sim racers are some of the more dangerous guys to strap into a formula 1 car. They know more or less what to do, but are not used to all the extra elements of actually driving for real, and might overestimate thier own competence.

Yeah, like if you strapped me in this car, I already know all the braking zones for this track, I already know how to trail brake and how to be smooth and gentle. So you'd probably had to put a leash on me inorder to keep me from pushing too hard and bottle massively lmao 😅 Dad had the same problem when he let me drive his car for the first time 😂😭

@@Nox_Desiree this hapened to me as well in a driving experience, it was a track I knew very well and spoked the instructor a bit since I went full on since I left the pits. He told me to chill and take a warmup lap haha

I can confirm this in a weird way. I was sim racing for years prior to getting my own driving licence. I was very technically competent, but I had to unlearn a lot of things. I drove too fast and was too harsh with my inputs. I'm a lot better now though...

We did something similar with sim pilots, put them in real aircraft and fear of the consequences soon stopped them trying anything too stupid

When I made my jump from sim to real track, It amazed me how much I can "forget" all the vibs and Gs etc etc... I really only could focus on what I was familiar with: visual, wheel force, and a little of sound maybe. Of course it's not F1 but some old FWD touring trainer, still, I did got some descent laptime according to my coach, but also got carsick by myself after all the fun... Similar story when I got Full Flight simulator from desktop flight sim hobby, I was able to put a very smooth landing on both 737 and A320 simulator the very first time, the only thing that got me is when going around, and the pushing force did got me a little feeling of pitching up too much- a very classic space disorientation, but I quickly get back to the instruments and got everything under control.

For me, one of the biggest displays of how important physical strength and fitness is for driving these cars, was Nico Rosberg saying he considered offering to fill in for Lewis at Sakhir last year, but deciding not to because he realised he genuinely couldn't last more than 2 laps before his neck would give in. He won the championship 4 years prior, and has stayed fairly fit and healthy since. And yet, he knows he's just incapable of driving these cars based on physical fitness alone.

And thats another reason why f1 is so hard for woman too, it's nothing to do with sex or chauvinism, it's just that male have an easier time developing the huge neck musculature needed to endurance 20 or 30 hours of Formula 1 every month

@@miguelelgueta5830 yeah I guess that's a valid point. Still, there are definitely women out there with better musculature than drivers like Tsunoda, just as one example. And with adequate training, I doubt many women would actually be incapable of lasting a full race (or a full season of races) in F1. A female F1 driver would be great to see honestly.

This is exactly why when it comes to commentators I only listen Brundle, Coulie, Rosberg ( when he's on ) and Button. Love it when a driver corrects a commentator especially if the commentator keeps going the driver gets fed up and they get that " I've been at this game a wee while now, how would you know!?" Tone 🤣

Definition of a F1 car: Wheeled, overpowered torpedo, with the sole purpose of projecting a single package of humanity round a track quicker than anything else.

@@amazingblyatman5760 For me the only bad part of the modern F1 cars is the tires. Year 2020 version was already bad with intentionally inferior tires that FIA requires go bad after a couple of laps instead of being the best the tire manufacturer could do. Year 2022 version with bigger wheels / lower profile tires is going to be even worse. Consider year 2005. The race length was the same and they weren't allowed to change tires during the race and the tires were still in pretty good condition at the end of the race. Modern tires explode after 30 laps.

@@amazingblyatman5760 heavier cars, less sensitive, Mickey Mouse KERS, Mickey Mouse DRS, nannying overtaking rules, too much fannying with tyres, fuel and regs, ....the engine downsizing, fartbox dull engine sounds, totally emasculated tracks with chicanes all over them, and all the vanilla boring Herman Tilker tracks. Also the drivers lack personality now, they’re all PR machines. Itk’s a really watered down sport now, a real shame. I can’t watch it.

I've got probably over a thousand hours clocked in my sim rig. Well over 500 races from f1 to lmp and rally. As a huge motorsport fan I can guarantee that I would have zero success behind the wheel of a real f1 car. I would probably have a panic attack the second I sit in the car lol

Been a racing fan for a long time with decent knowledge of the various aspects of racing. I wouldnt get an F1 car around 1 lap on any track. Maybe if I started on thursday I could land an out lap on sunday but the pace would be tens of seconds of the real pace and most likely I wouldnt enjoy the ride. The sheer speed of the thing would overload my senses completely.

All I know is that I’ve had a few track days with a Formula 2000 car, and even that is enough for me to say “yeah, no.” While that car is one that I could find the limits in, and one that I was confident in my ability to control, even 1-1.5G on the brakes and in fast corners beats the hell out of you after you’ve been out for an hour. 5 times that? Pfff.

I had a terrible experience driving an 80s f2 car: all I could think about was how to properly change gear, what were the breaking points or the gear to be in in a certain corner; there was no way I could think about going fast. The problem was simple: 3 laps (as most of these kind of experiences allow) isn't nearly enough to enjoy or realize what you're doing. To drive a car that low, that fast and potentially that expencive if you crash it is just too much to handle in such a short amount of time (at least for me!).

Richard Hammond barely managed to do this, and he's a professionally trained driver (he's a very skilled driver despite what the jokes about him say), so I don't think I could do this, I'm glad I passed my driver's test lol

@@Mansell5Senna8 maybe it was too cold, but not too small. The track was one of the short layouts of Silverstone, so the lap was quite short, but otherwise it's an FiA grade 1 circuit

True, the original stig who was a professional driver who raced at Le Man said when asked which of the three he'd rather have as a teammate said Hammond was the quickest and most complete driver overall. He probably crashed the most BECAUSE he had more confidence in the cars and thus pushed harder. Also if you notice because he is professionally trained top gear always gave Hammond the fastest cars, some of which required a racing licence to drive.

What a great video. I could only dream of having an F1 experience like this. I'd probably be in tears if I was able to get a day of testing like this. Truly once in a lifetime for an average person.

I think the fear of breaking an extremely expensive F1 car would be my biggest concern followed quickly by an aching neck. I had an experience day driving a Murcielago and as soon as i jumped in (without insurance waiver =S) I had to reverse it out from between 4 cars with a combined value of over a million pounds. That was the scariest part, once it was on the track it felt like driving an executive car, albeit a very fast one. I'd feel like I had accelerated to 60 then look down and realise I was doing 150mph. What an amazing experience it must be to drive an F1 car.

Thank you for this video! I've been casually watching F1 races since I was probably 6 or 7, and I have been following it much more closely in 2021 season, and last week I started playing the official F1 game. Just a few nights ago I thought of what kind of experience it would be to drive one of those cars for real. This video has shed some light on my thoughts.

I own an old Superbike Replica that I once put on track. A former pro pilot who knew this bike perfectly told be I used 10% of the its capability. Incredible gap between you and a pro! 🙂

I'm sure a lot of us could 'drive' one after some training but it's the mental recalibration and physical demands that would take a LOT of developing to do it anything like properly! I tried a Formula Ford, in the wet - that was overwhelming (and thrilling) enough and I'm quite sure it was nowhere near its potential. A real eye-opener was having a passenger hot lap in a Radical with pro instructor, at Anglesey. Slick tyres, dry. Simply couldn't believe forces at play.

Ive Driven A Ginetta Junior In A Test, And It feels so fast, when you are doing 90mph, I cant imagine what 200mph feels like, though My dream is to be a race driver so maybe one day I will.

if you ever happen to go to Florida, do the nascar racing experience. I did it at homestead where I went 150 and daytona where I went 180. After I did it I gained a whole lot more respect for the drivers especially after realizing how fast they were actually going during big wrecks (especially for Ryan Newman's 2020 crash and Austin Dillon's 2015 crash)

I remember my first session on an F2 motorcycle, i was FLYING until I got back in the pits and found I was only 1 second faster than on my other motorcycle (a CAN-AM TNT 250 - a street and trail bike with street tires and drum brakes)!!! I race a Miata on the sim and could not go that much faster in a GTR intially. I would still love the seat time!!

The most incredible thing I have done in my life has been driving a Formula Renault 3.5 around Red Bull Ring back in 2012. I used to race on karts when I was a child and I kept on driving a friend's KZ2 for fun occasionally , but that thing was MENTAL. In two 15 minutes sessions I have never been able to adapt to how freakin' fast it could decelerate at the first, third and fourth corners. I always found myself breaking at least 10 or 15 meters too soon, having to leave the brake pedal and than brake again. My brain was simply not able to process how hard that thing could brake, and my survival instinct has always prevailed. Every time I tried I was simply too scared to keep on the throttle few meters more. And it was not the only thing that scared the crap out of me! The speed in the last corners was INSANE! And the acceleration out of the slow corners!! I'm still exited thinking about it almost 10 years after, I cannot even immagine how mind blowing an F1 car would be, especially considering I could not believe how ludicrously fast a Formula Renault was.

yep thats the thing, sitting in those cars ur brain tells u BREAK BREAK, but you can still break like 20m later, or ur brain screaming to slow down before the corner, but if you slow down youre tires will be too cold and lose the grip so you need to convice ur brain and fear to get that corner at that particular speed and trust yourself and the car , its insane ;D

Hammond has a racing licence and the original stig who was a real racing driver said Hammond was probably the quickest and most complete driver of the three. He probably crashed most because he pushed more lmao.

you gotta be careful, some companies offering these "f1 experiences" change the engine of the car for something easier and cheaper) to maintain and with less HP. It is the case of "AGS" offering a Prost AP04 (2001) but without the Ferrari engine on the back. If you are going to do it, do it right.

I’ve driven a friends go kart. It did around 0-60mph in less than 2 seconds. Nothing really prepared me for the g force. Firstly, every time I hit full throttle, my helmet nearly came off my head and I could barely see. After 5-10 mins of driving my ribs would hurt too much to continue. After an hour of taking turns driving round my body was destroyed. I was aching everywhere for a week. Helped me appreciate that f1 drivers are real athletes.

Absolutely fantastic video….answered a lot of questions I always had.It takes a few days/weeks to even get used to any new basic car so how could anyone push an F1 car anywhere close to the limit in 1 day.Even Schumacher got a fright the first time he drove an F1 car.I say a bbc interview with him where he admitted he thought “I can’t do this” after the first lap bit obviously got the hang of it after an hour of practice

I think riding sports bikes helps overcome getting used to high revving. That’s one thing I’d be able to handle pretty easily as my bike easily saw 16,000rpm often. I’d love to see what else I’d be able to handle or what I’d struggle with

Also sportbikes give you skill of feeling traction limits. If you ride sport bike hard or brake hard you have to be able to feel with you butt and other senses when you are at traction limits.

Driving one around a track is one thing, racing at anything close to the capability of an F1 car is something else. I have driven Formula Audi and Renault and to be honest I never got close, plus I was completely shattered after 20 minutes.

I was quite overwhelmed when I first drove a little Formula Renault Campus. I am eventually planning to do such an experience with F1, but I want more experience in something more friendly so then I can try to give it some, when the time comes, and not just slowly drive around the corners to hesitantly give it some beans on the straight like you can see in many videos of people doing these experiences :)

I think back to that Vin Wiki video of the regular guy that got to drive an F1 car. He said his head got pulled into the cockpit while braking from the G Forces, and when he got back to the pit, the engineer congratulated him on getting up to 40% brake pressure as that was pretty high for a newbie. "Only 40%?!"

That is my dream🥰🥰💜! I’d love to have that experience of getting to drive those Formula cars🏎! Heart pounding, hands shaking head bopping around and neck aching….I’d love it all! I hope the nerves would settle though after the first few laps, lol. Everyday when I’m driving on the back roads of Vermont (U.S.A.), I wonder what it’d be like to drive a formula 1 car….my mind gets swept away as I shift down and hit my braking point and glide through the tight corner of the rural road, making sure I stick close to the apex of my racing line and that I pick up on the throttle at the right time. For that brief moment I pretend it’s the last turn of the lap in the Vermont Grand Prix🏁, heading down the the straight, crowd cheering and all…..then I come back to reality and notice I’m in my 170hp VW🚗😕. Thankfully I can keep dreaming, lol!! Love the vids Driver 61!!

Damn, I'm nervous already and I'm just listening to everything you're describing. Driving a modern f1 car is at the same time in my top 3 of most desirable things to do in life and maybe the absolutely scariest one (beaten only by a very hypothetical solo skydiving experience).

I was 32 years old and about 5 years of simracing (rfactor... G25...), the first time I drove go-karts. At the end of the stint my arms were too weak to get out by myself.

Awesome. I raced Superkarts for a few seasons and could manage 2.5g+ in a few corners around some tracks. After a day of racing (around 15 laps total), my neck was absolutely shot. That’s with gaps between races, and with only 2g of braking performance. The neck is without a doubt the weakest link 😀 The fear is an interesting one too. Even in my modest sim rig, places like Monaco are scary fast. I honestly can’t imagine trying to drive around there in a real car with more than half of the cars limit.

Would love to have a go one day before I get too old for it. I’m a good virtual racer and ride motorcycles on track so speed and acceleration isn’t a surprise for me but trying out an F1 car would definitely be something special.

Maybe with a lot of practice. I kept doing the Senna Lotus time trial at Brands Hatch on Gran Turismo 6 with a Logitech wheel and I got ok times. But of course, there's no g force or vibration on that. Silver was the best result I got. I'd love to give it a go some day.

Possibly could. I’ve driven almost everything from indy lights to SCCA rally. But I’m not really comfortable without a pedal clutch and stick transmission. I guess that says a lot about my age! That being said braking and corners are my best spots on ANY track.

Was genuinely hoping this was building up to a competition. I would love to give it ago, see how close I could get to the limit. Formula one cars are not given the credit they deserve. The speed at which they can glide round corners is insane. I think about it a lot, imagining what it would be like to pilot one of these monsters lap after lap. I wouldn’t be interested in racing them but man I would do anything to drive one around a track… anything.

At the Skip Barber school 41 years ago I could barely get through the in-line slalom cones the first day in the Formula Ford but by the last day I was the fastest through the fastest corner, 100 degree, on the track at 103 mph. Getting to trust the car is definitely crucial.

I've always said one of the funny things about F1 is you have to drive it fast to drive it fast. Without aero you don't have brakes, accel, or turning, at least comparatively speaking. It's a very nonlinear kind of performance.

What an awesome video! Great to see a detailed explanation of how normal people experience these beasts. As an engineer I technically know what these are capable of but I just can't imagine feeling 5Gs in any lateral direction like that. I can only maybe compare to driving a fast jet ski and turning left at full speed. Still probably nowhere close to 5Gs.

Most people have no comprehension of the combination of strength, endurance, dexterity, and the ability to process lots of sensations and decisions very fast under pressure. They think they do, but they are wrong. Requires many years of track time, not once every two months on a track day or a corporate kart event. I think the next change in professional race drivers will be ones who understand the car technology/engineering aspect at degree level. The ones who crack that next will have a huge advantage over the others,. If i was a team talent scout I would be steering younger drivers to spend a lot more time with coaching in the mental strength/ engineering side of racing. Great video as always!

That's on the top of my bucket list. I would love to drive an F1 car. It won't be a dream come through it would be a nightmare come through. It's a nightmare imagining being in an F1 car until you actually drive it. After watching this video of Ricky's excitement and his accomplishments of driving the F4 and the F1 car It gave me some confidence that I could do both I've been driving regular cars for a very long time when I started 16 years old now I'm 51 and I had one accident so far and it wasn't my fault. I feel it in my bones that I can do the same or better than what Ricky did.

Had a fair bit of race circuit experience, the things that would get me are everything outside actually driving the car. Like radio communications and strategic thinking, I can only concentrate on the actual driving.

As someone who’s done hours upon hours of high level sim racing as well as a fair bit of racing in real life too both on rally stages and karting tracks before I started sim racing. I full well know if I were to step foot in an F1 car toned down for driver training or coaching like this, I can whole heartedly admit I’d struggle in more ways than one. It’d take me many out laps and slow runs to get used to things as little as adjusting to that amount of sound behind me and like you said adapting to the operating range of the minimum speed. If I’m honest I think I’d just completely shut all my racing knowledge and experience out of the situation and go in completely starting from the ground up.

I did it! not with the 2012 Alpine F1 of Winfield, but with a 2001 Prost AP04 from LRS in Barcelona. It is so hard! I never got anything nearly up to temps (they dont use tyre heaters etc). One downside was the engine, because always when i wanted to slowly accelerate out of the corner, the engine stuttered extremly, so it felt like bouncing from rear to front and back, really extrem. They said after that the engine wouldn't run correctly between 6.000 and 7.000rpm which would be normal. But i couldn't downshift more to avoid, and was too slow to upshift. So everytime i wanted to accelerate out of a corner, it stuttered extremly and I had to slow down a lot below that rpms and then accelerate slowly through that band. It kind of ruined a lot. And I tried to brake as hard as i could, even locked up several times, but only managed 1.4g, because everything was cold. Probably I could have pressed harder in the beginning of the braking phase, but yeah, no chance. At the end I was 15 seconds slower than the F4, but mainly because of the stutttering engine which didn't allow me to accelerate out of the corners smoothly. I pulled 2g at braking with the F4 on rain tyres and only 1.4g with slick tyres on the F1 The acceleration however was extremly awesome, I really loved that. But knowing a lot about F1 I know that the acceleration is really not that interesting in an F1, it's cornering and braking. And I knew before I probably wouldn't be able to have the courage to go that fast through corners, but braking i thought might be ok. Realizing it didn't work at all was hard and frustrating.

I think the best example to show how difficult this is is when Richard Hammond drove a Renault R25 F1 car around Silverstone. He’s a pretty good driver due to what he does but he found it really really difficult. It’s a fascinating video to watch if you want to appreciate how difficult this really is.

Those G forces kick your ass man. Especially over a race the physical shape one has to be in is something special in itself but the hand eye and general racing instinct is what makes them a breed of their own. (All racers that is) as an Indycar fan I couldn’t imagine going 220mph around Indianapolis for 500 miles. Average joes like us would lose the ability to spot the apex by lap 5. Respect to all real racers.

My dad got to do the rusty wallace driver experience in which he got to drive a COT nascar and he says it's the hardest thing he's ever done in his life. I just started driving pro late models and it's the toughest thing I've ever driven
