What happens when you test an Sony rx100v vs a Sony a7sii? I tested them side by side in handheld stabilization, rolling shutter, dynamic range, low light capability, highlight rolloff and more.

Best thing of RX100V is that you can have it in your pocket like a phone. When seeing something worth doing a photo or video, it happens your camera, usually, is at home.

Thanks for the video content! Excuse me for the intrusion, I am interested in your opinion. Have you heard the talk about - Riddleagan Create Memories Remedy (search on google)? It is a great one of a kind guide for mastering dslr camera and creating stunning photos minus the hard work. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my BF got astronomical results with it.

What a mature assessment! I would summarize that if the categories are close enough, then the RX100 wins by default, because of the price and portability factor, which are my particular criteria Thanks, Heist, for this extremely to-the-point clip.

Cam tech has gotten better... RX100 is better than hollywood cams 10-15 years ago. So it's fine. The biggest difference that wasn't covered was the benefits of a lens based system. For photography, the RX100 has trouble producing shorter depths of view and bokeh when you have limited space. Its fine for landscape shots, but for portraits not so much... same applies to video.

I just replaced my NEX 6 with an RX100V. The primary driver was to have a camera nearly as good as my NEX6 that I will want/have to use with me. I found leaning on my iPhone more and more because I didn’t want to lug the NEX 6 with all the lenses with me. But I also didn’t want a standard point and shoot. I do lots of family and kids photos and tons of home movies. I used to be a pro videographer. It looks like I made the right choice but haven’t had the time to really dive in. Great video!

I'm dubbing between a6300 with kitlens for 820 dollar or a RX100 mark V for around 1000dollars , mainly interested in shooting video but not interested in upgrading lens anytime soon. Any advice? I already have a gimbal which can hold the RX100, I wouldn't have any extra stabiliser for the A6300. I will mainly use them for traveling and light filmmaking. Hope you can help!
@hidemaxwell
@hidemaxwell 6 лет назад
As a travel camera the rx100v is amazing simply bc you can keep in on you at all times even in a pocket. I keep mine in a small case attached to my belt and just having it there is a great peace of mind whenever I'm out. However, the a6300 will deliver a better image simply based on sensor size and resolution. So if absolute best image for a sub 1k price point is your goal then get the 6300, but if versatility and convenience is your goal then get the rx100v. Hope this helps and thanks for the comment.

@hidemaxwell
@hidemaxwell 3 года назад
Ive never used the zv1 but it has a similar sensor to the latest rx100 camera. I think the zv1 is more geared toward video though. I think it seems pretty good, just depends on what exactly you are going for. ZV1 id good for shooting in public and carrying a tiny camera with decent quality.

thanks for the video this was great! i own the rx100 v so i just wanted to ask you what settings did you use on the rx100 for the stabilization test? my footage of the rx100 is very shaky especially compared to footage from the a7sii which has in body stabilization. .... also how did you manage to have minimal grain in the footage at 1600 iso? did you add denoise in post ? last question what does the setting of 3 stops of dynamic range mean on how do you set it up? thank you for your time..... may be you can do a short tutorial on the settings you used on the rx100? ... i would definately watch that....i subscribed ;)
@hidemaxwell
@hidemaxwell 6 лет назад
as i recall i shot the stabilization test at slog2, 28mm f2.8, 23.98fps, 50 shutter. if you shoot log at 1600 on either camera there will be minimal noise. no denoise needed! for the dynamic range i used 3 stops of ND filter, bc the sky was blowing out and the rx100v has a built in nd filter that gives you 3 stops of ND and I added the same amount of ND to the a7sii as well using a variable ND filter.

I already own an a7sII and don't wanna replace it. Just want an RX100V because I need a 4K B-cam and it's just great. Also I shoot landscapes often so 24-70 equiv and a sensor that allows for raw photos at a max of 400 ISO and clean 20MP, that's all I need for landscapes.

Great video. I think the only thing making me hesitant about rx100 is the lack of microphone jack. And only being able to record couple of minutes of 4k....seems like it's not worth the upgrade from the mark iii version.

@Jogibaer_universe
@Jogibaer_universe 6 лет назад
Good test, however I'm missing used lens for the A7SII and the focus on the highway was not the same for the RX100V. I was in the tricky position to decide between these cameras, and I finally decided for the A7SII with Sony G lens. I'm not professional, but if I buy a camera, I really want to be satisfied with it, especially for shooting in low light conditions. Since now, the A7SII together with G lens SEL2470GM is the only combination which could convince me. So thank you very much for your test.
@hidemaxwell
@hidemaxwell 6 лет назад
the lens for the a7sii was a contax zeiss 28mm 2.8. a7sii with a G lens will give you some of the best image quality you will find on a DSLR or Mirrorless camera. however, that combo is like 5k and the rx100v is 1k. it better look better! the point is, is that the rx100v is not 5 times worse and in some ways can be better in terms of size, form factor, and ease of use.
@Jogibaer_universe
@Jogibaer_universe 6 лет назад
Thank you, yes of course you are absolutely right. A complete different type and different price tag as well obviously, but is was very interesting anyway. If the 4K videos would have looked concerning details like the A7SII and the RX100 V would be able to record more than 8 minutes (see other 4K video tests) before overheating, I would have chosen the RX100 V. I also got to know that the Zeiss lens (for the A7SII) has massive quality problems respectively it's a lottery to get a zeiss lens with good quality. Some people had to exchange the lens three times until they received one with good quality meaning without color fringing etc.. Maybe you were lucky with your lens. :)

Can I please have some help? I've been trying to figure out what to get specifically for RU-vid videos. I've been using 1 g7x mk1 & 3 SJ4000 action cams for about 3-4 years now, and the canon does great in low light, but 1 of my sj4000's broke a few weeks ago. At first I thought I should get an action camera, then point and shoot, then dslr, now camcorder...basically, I have no idea. I would probably need 2 cameras. I have a g7x mk 1, which does really great in my low light setting even with just those 2 lights, BUTTTT, only records video for about 10-15 mins before stopping. The problem is that my setting is virtually pitch black, aside from the 2 Neewer 176 LED lights I use pointed on my drums. ^ I've researched and learned that action cams don't do well in low light and adding more light can even make a bad camera better, so I may be getting 2 more of those Neewer lights and have 1 on each corner of my drum rug. But what about point and shoots? Action Cameras? --------------------------------------------------- My lighting setup/scenario: * Black background all around my walls. * I use 2 Neewer 176 LED lights on myself and my drums with no living room lights on and the Neewers at around 10-20% brightness ^So it's basically pitch black aside from the LED lights. Things I don't care about: 1. Audio quality (I get that edited) 2. Stabilization - they'll be mounted on a tripod or boom mic stand. 3. 4k - though it'd be cool to shoot in that and slow down for super slo-mo, but I think I can do that with 1080, 60fps Things I care about: *Price: Range $300-$500 (I may need 2 cameras, so, yeah) ^^^Though I'm willing to spend a little more on a good DSLR/point and shoot if I have to and possibly just get 1 camera while I continue to use my g7x mk1. 1. Shoots great video quality in a low to no light studio. 2. Has a pretty good color profile in low light. 3. NO Grain/Noise in my low light setting. 4. Adjustable settings (WB, ISO, Exposure, etc) 5. Long record time - at least 45 mins (I don't need 5,6,7+ hours, but at least 45 mins, most likely an hour in 1 video) 6. Great battery life - I don't wanna have to interrupt my drumming to swap out batteries. ***Bonus if it can be plugged in charging while recording. My options: Action cams - DSLR/Point n shoot - Camcorder 1. GoPro Hero 5 Black - not performing well in my studio so far.. 2. Yi Lite - haven't gotten yet 3. Yi-4k - haven't gotten yet 4. SJ7 Star - haven't ordered. 5. Canon EOS M50 6. Canon EOS Rebel T4i 7. Canon EOS Rebel T5i 8. Canon EOS Rebel T6 9. Canon 70D (but pretty expensive for 1 camera) 10. Canon EOS 700D 11. Canon EOS Rebel SL2 12. Panasonic Lumix LX10 13. Panasonic Lumix G7 4k 14. Nikon D3200 24.2 MP 15. Sony 4k FDRAX33 16. Sony Handycam CX405 17. Canon Vixia HF R72 Camcorder I'd really appreciate some help with this. I'm a drummer, not a photographer lol This stuff is confusing. Thanks in advance.

good question, and it depends on what your final delivery/purpose is. If you don't mind a little noise or have noise cleaning software I would go up to 12800 in certain situations. Sony cameras in general are incredible in low light. If it was a closeup on someone's face or a dialogue scene probably stick to around 3200 or mayyybe 6400.

@hidemaxwell
@hidemaxwell 5 лет назад
@@vince5474 I actually sold my rx100v after getting my iphone xr. The quality level is too close to have both. For me, I would not spend money on a 1 inch sensor even with all these bells and whistles. I made this video almost 2 years ago and cell phone tech has simply caught up. For me, I would only spend money on apsc and above. I think the 6400 would be a great choice and I think those apsc cameras are small enough with a small lens to go everywhere the rx100 can go. Just my 2 cents.

Should I get the upcoming A7 III or Fuji XE3 if I going to use it for street, lifestyle travel, event, video, youtube and so on? Does the size different much and do I need to consider the size and wight since they both not pocketable and end up in a sling back or backpack?

Listen, I love the look of Fuji for photos. Amazing colors and detail. But for video I just don't think it's a serious platform. I'd love to own a fuji camera for street photography one day but since I make money off video, I'd choose sony, canon, or panasonic for video. Specifically, I don't like how the XE3 has record time limits on almost all resolutions of 10min. That means you can't really use it for interviews. Also, I prefer full frame for video. Just my opinion though!

Hahahaha. Now you have answered me, I take the oportunty to ask about one doubt that has my head running hot. I bought the Lumix g85 a few months ago. I love it, the way it feels, all the custom dials for smooth daily use, the stabilization. But I see these Sony cameras and I don't know why but I see like the quality of the photos has something special that seems better to me, also that portabilty of the RX100 or the a6300 will be awesome. So I don't know if should I sell the g85 and buy one of them or what! D: Have you tested them? Will be awesome to hear your recomendation, thanks a lot!!
@hidemaxwell
@hidemaxwell 6 лет назад
G85 vs Rx100 isnt a proper comparison despite the price similarity. rx100 is a point and shoot and only has a 1 inch sensor whereas the g85 has a m4/3 sensor which has more detail to the image. so why does the rx100 have the same price tag? it's bc of the small size and relative features packed inside a tiny body. thats the true value and appeal of the rx100 series. a6300/a6500 is a better comparison. one downside ive heard about the g85 is it has poor autofocus which is unacceptable for vlogging. the a6500 has excellent top of class autofocus. as for the "look" of the diff brands, even though i'm a sony shooter i will say that their color science isn't as good as panasonic or canon. shooting sony is more about the tech inside the camera, the low light, the autofocus etc. in conclusion it comes down to what you want to get out of your camera. what do u use it for? if you are vlogger, i would def consider getting an rx100v or a a6500. however, if you just want a great value camera that makes a nice image and has a lot of features for the price, then just stick with your camera. hope this helps! remember, camera decisions are all subjective, just do your homework, watch reviews, and go with what seems the best for you.

Good review. It would have been interesting to compare the physical sizes and carrying compromises. For example what if you were going to hike out and live in a yurt in Mongolia. Which camera would you choose. Backpack into the rockies for a week. My 5DMK3 would break me. So given that I would go for the 100--and think I might. But your review got me thinking!

Thats a good point. Such a basic thing but very important. Def should have had a physical comparison! Thank you.

I have the slightly older RX100IV and personally I wouldn't shoot SLOG2 with it as the camera is too noisy at ISO 800 even if you expose SLOG correctly.
@hidemaxwell

interesting, are you exposing it 2 stops over?

@hidemaxwell

depends on how much you shoot and if you are shooting video vs stills. but if you are shooting video then def not. I have a couple spare batteries i always keep with the camera.

I am getting tiered of watching videos that tells the obvious. This little camera is very good because of the size and really quallity video, but it could be just used as a second camera, or camera which you could carry everywhere. Congratulations you discover that small cameras are for small things like video blogs, instagram and facebook. Big cameras are for big things. There are no small, cheap, ultimate camera on the market.
@hidemaxwell

haha you are right. but i think people people want to see the camera put through its paces. they want to actually see the footage more so my opinion or conclusion.

If you have a Sony RX100 camera and you want a spare battery charged and at the ready then do like I've done and by another compact from Sony like the DSC-WX350 then that way you can swap between batteries when the RX100 has run out of charge. Then by yourself a portable power bank to charge the dead battery in the WX350. This way you have the sophistication of the RX100 combined with the 20 times zoom range of the WX350. 😀

this is true, but like i said, this is not a doc camera or an interview camera
@hidemaxwell

I would keep my pausing of interviews to a minimum. With this camera I'd shoot interviews on 1080p only and get 4k broll instead.
