As well as being genuinely funny, the roleplaying that the instructor takes on is a really important lesson for the test that the assessors really are just random people you've just met who may have a variety of personalities that you're going to have to deal with, get used to their quirks, and drive the best you can regardless. edit: also, the head synchronisation from 5:03 is VERY cute
Props to the young lad for putting himself under pressure in public. Recognising you can improve and taking positive steps to get you on that path will stand you in good stead.
Hello Julia . Good evening I hope my comment didn't sound like an invasion of privacy. Your comment tells about a wonderful woman with a beautiful heart which made me write the comment I don't usually write in the comment section but I think you deserve this compliment. If you don't mind, can we be friends? Thanks God bless you….
I think the Idea is hilarious but it also has a technical aspect. its like a ritual to change your mindset. like when some people light a candle to study. I think this type of stuff is actually quite practical. ps. I asked
Thank you to Ewan for agreeing to share this online. Also for actually going through with this mock test at all - his body language allowed me to see he's really tense about it, just as I was when I was taking a driving test. In fact I had to do a couple retries precisely because of tension and nervousness. Might have been even more intense for him as a driver of several years, it's not easy to face one's weaknesses or bad habits. Kudos, Ewan. Wish you a lot of growth in your life.
Well done Ewan for coming forward and having a go, you're largely a good driver. I think you rush things a bit, better planning at your junctions and roundabouts. I was a Community Nurse and a visit to somebodies home would sometimes turn out to be not as straightforward as it was meant to be which held me up, that me feel under pressure to get along to the next call, but it can't be helped just carry on at the best driving you can do. Sorry to hear you had an accident, they're not pleasant. Richard will help you out, and good luck for your future.
I think he's a fantastic driver, props to him. Very competent and great control of the car, I think this has been your best yet, and I've watched a lot.
Hello Richard! Today I passed my driving exam in Serbia, with only a single minor error. Your tips and general advice have had helped tremendously. Even though we drive on the opposite side of the road and have some different particular traffic rules, overarching general principles regarding the safe driving style, and especially the proper driving attitude, were of great help to me! I am sure that I will still be checking out your content for further driving advice. Thank you very much for creating this channel!
Very interesting video! As I driving instructor myself, I find this channel a great help to improve myself. If it was possible, I'd travel to UK to have a mock test with you. Sometimes I recommend your channel to my students when they struggle with something :)
It's evident from the video and from what Richard has said, Ewan is a competent driver with good skill, but it's an issue with rushing and trusting that something will work out without going into it without knowing that it shall. Good feedback and I think all of us are a little guilty of this too so really relevant feedback for everyone to take onboard. Cheers. Richard.
Hi Richard, I forgot to mention that I passed my driving test about 4 weeks ago with no faults thanks to you and your helpful tips as well as the help from my own driving instructor Varney. I can't express how gratefully I am to have come across your content as it means so much to me, not just because I passed but I did it with no faults. Also your character in the video is a very accurate representation of an actual driving examiner and it never stopped to put a smile to my face, well done.
Excellent assessment. I enjoyed this one. I'm very conscious of my own lax habits and attitude after fifty years on the road , mostly in the US and a lot of it as a messenger/courier.
I think I can only repeat what other viewer's comments have said already. First of all, aside from being extremely precise, clear and convincing in the explanations given, and exceptionally well put together, these mock test videos are absolute gems because of the unique idea of impersonating an imaginary examiner. For the viewers, it makes for great watching and, I think, also for the person being examined it introduces an unlikely, but very clever and helpful combination: on one hand, Richard "disappears" and there is this unfamiliar, distanced guy, who, contrary to Richard, may not be so interested in you doing well, which makes you know you really need to focus on your job; but on the other hand, Richard's acting and his invented, somewhat whacky characters in the role of the examiner must be a little funny for those examined as well, and it's always good to start things in a good mood and a little relaxed by a bit of humour. The second thing I wanted to mention is, obviously, my massive admiration for Ewan. What an amazing guy! Such humbleness! He's so unassuming! I'm sure he's doing the best he can to drive well and to be as safe a road user as he can be, but since he's had some minor accidents, he decided to spend time and put himself out to public scrutiny simply for the opportunity to get a professional assesment of his driving. I don't want to get too mushy, but if someone is not deeply impressed with such an attitude, then I don't know what will impress them. Thank you to you both, Richard and Ewan, and all the best to you, Ewan!
Thanks Richard. I passed my test today. Although I've been driving for 23+ years including heavy vehicles in Asia, your videos helped me alot to pass the British Practical Driving test in one go.
If I wasn't miles away I would love a lesson with you ! I have passed my test with 3 minors. But from watching these and your general videos. I know there is always room for improvement. Every video is such a big help in becoming an even safer driver. I think a lot more of the general public should take some notes from you.
I do like your videos. Especially the random assessors 😂 The driving instructor trick of the bus lane at North Station Road and Middleborough is still being used then, my instructor who taught me many years back used that to try and surprise people 😅
Thank you for your videos! I have a test coming up this week and after getting to a good standard, anxiety broke me down for my current lessons right before my test. Your anxiety video helped me to turn it around and im going to keep your advice close to my heart so i can get myself to pass 🙏🏼
Hi I watched your mock test videos and your driving tips videos and last night i watched this mock test video.I have passed today UK on my 3rd test and i genuinely believe your videos helped me to pass my test today.Thankyou.
Hi there, thank you a million, I have just passed my driving test this Monday. your competent videos helped me a lot. From beginner level videos to high videos I watched them all! My appreciation is beyond words. Best wishes!
Hi Richard I passed today with a faultless pass thanks to your tips and other youtube instructors and of course my amazing Instructor Lisa you did an amazing job to take me from terrified and terrible I have been knocked off a motorbike on several occasions during my motorbike courier years but she turned everything around and now I love driving and to pass with Zero Faults im still reeling ty again Richard your videos as with a few others have been invaluable x
Thank you so much mate, your videos have been incredibly helpful to me, both the work you put into making these videos, along with my also brilliant instructor helped me pass first time today. I particularly found your videos about when to go at roundabouts, reading traffic coming around the roundabout and three lane roundabouts the most helpful to me.
I've said this before, but I'd love to do a mock test with Arthur...I struggle with my back too, but I do have a pension. 35 years experience, bus driver and instructor, so pretty sure I could pass with no more than 3 minors. Blindfolded!!
OK, blindfolded would be taking it a bit far. Saying only 3 minors was the beer talking, but could I pass after a lot of years and many, many bad habits? I do believe I'm a safe driver, (I have to be, or I'd be out of a job). With all the changes since I originally passed, I just wonder if I could do it again.
Oh Richard I cant stop smiling for the first 10 minutes 😄 these examiners you do are TV gold. Tbh that was a really good drive! Not sure how old he is but for a young driver that's a good ammount of skill. Like you said richard, the job he does probably contributed to the corner cutting and the emergency stop is hard to emulate when there isnt an actual emergency unless you're a learner and are used to practising this as part of lessons. Well done to the participant!
Hi Richard. I send all my pupils to your channel. So much good info and detail. 8 minutes in I would like to have seen you pick up that when he turned left at a giveway line he spent the whole time looking right. There is a bus stopped on the other side of the road with vehicles overtaking. He heeds to know it is safe where he is going. Another sign of an experienced driving rushing. Looking to see a gap and not caring enough about where they are going. I liked the oads honesty that he says he gets beeped a lot by other drivers, a sure sign he is being a problem to them. Fair play that you gave him and he he took this opportunity to to improve.
Another fantastic vid I love these as I learn alot and see alot in me that I know I'd 'fail' on I was a Tesco delivery driver & know what this lad is thinking They didn't train me at all. ZERO assessment. It's disgusting! I had minor collision with parked vehicle on second shift. All their attitude is "if you have a driving licence, you can drive these big vans" it's a load of nonsense, but Tesco won't as it costs too much! (Well at the depot I was based at) Ironically all that job taught me was I'm even more over cautious The job I detested it Thanks for the vid
I hope to see more of this Arthur chap! Very similar to Richard in lots ways, but has so much experience and stories and (don't tell Richard I said this) more handsome!
10:40 I agree, but this kind of thing feels so hard to do properly after you've gotten your license. I get these situations quite often where I live and I try to be safe and go slow, but immediately people will start honking and going insane behind you because you're not driving at the speed limit, leading to some quite dangerous overtaking and stress... And very often when you see people loading up things into cars like that, there could very likely be a child on the other side of the car. I had a bit if a scare one time that made me pass these things more slowly again when a child suddenly walks out from behind the car and almost into the street... Sometimes I feel like one of the biggest challenges in driving properly is not getting pressured into disregarding safety from the cars behind you. I suppose I just have to grow thicker skin and not let the honking and rude gestures bother me lol
An important lesson I give as an instructor is to make sure my pupils do things in their own time and not respond to pressure. Making them aware of the pressure and explaining that it's normal and they can't please everyone, usually helps. Driving safely will annoy some people.
34:12 is a good learning moment for those preparing for their test. You can ask the examiner in this scenario if you're not sure where you're going so you can prepare early.
I've been driving cars and motorbikes since 1988 when I passed my test and I've never had an accident. In that time I've only had two speeding tickets, 35 and 34 in a 30. Every couple of years or so I go and take some training for the motorcycles, but I've never taken any further training for the cars. Pretty sure that if I did the car test again, I'd probably fail it.😂😂
Had my test a couple of days ago, was so gutting. Did everything right except a couple of hesistancy minors. But I was engulfed at looking at the satnav to work out my exit at a roundabout that I didn't see the traffic lights went green giving me my only serious fault :(
Definitely reccomend collingwoods learner insurance, paid 179.00 for a year on a 1.6 fully comp with breakdown cover as a learner (17 y/o male from what I know age and gender can affect insurance quotes)
I love your videos,it really helped me alot since here in south africa we too have to always keep on the left side of the road and have righthand drive cars as well.
If I was a driving examiner I don't think anyone would pass. Being autistic my attention to detail is very focused and I can spot faults like a hawk. This is what I will say in the job interview.
A pet peve of mine (and most pedestrians) is cars failing to signal at roundabouts. It's not just a difficulty for cars waiting to go, but on many roundabouts the pedestrian is expected to cross whenever there is a gap. You rely on cars being decent signallers and indicating (or not) to let you know if they are going to be crossing. People do get hit (or very close calls) by running across expecting a car to continue around the roundabout because a car has failed to signall left on exit. Should pedestrians wait? Well, given how busy some roundabouts can be, there really is often no choice! Given how fast a car goes around a roundabout that split second choice to take a gap or leave it would be much safer if all cars signalled correctly!
I've learnt many of my mistakes by watching this video.😅 when driving, my instructor focuses on what to keep me safe & boost my confidence. Probably, my minors would fail me before any serious fault is marked 😂
Can you do another video of yourself driving around another city like you did in Brighton and Bristol a few months ago, however could you drive around Birmingham or Nottingham and compare what the driving is like in those city’s compared to other cities in the UK?
Huh.. This video made me feel much more confident that I would not have as many problems in a driving exam (even under UK standards) as I first thought I would. The way my father taught me (after I got my license) on first gear was that I would only really use it when starting from a stop or when going extremely slowly. And honestly... First time hearing anyone would use the handbrake at a traffic stop. I would never do that unless it's a relatively sharp incline so as to not tire out my foot due to more force needed to maintain the car stopped. In regards to attitude. I noticed that since I am driving a whole lot less ever since the pandemic started I started to ask my wife to get out to call out if I get too close to another car in situations where I used to be dead certain I head plenty of room (and she does call out that there is plenty of room quite often recently) so I would agree that delivery drivers are probably incetivized to drive in a way that is less safe.
Just a thought. You could do a video about how to use a visor properly. Sometimes the visor gets in the way of the rear mirror, making it unsafe. I was never taught how to use it properly when I was learning to drive. I was just told to use it if it's sunny. It's especially a problem if it's winter and the sun is lower I find.
I passed my test a couple of days ago with ZERO proper lessons. Just my wife showing me the basics, and your videos really honing in on all the parts that the tester wants to see. So thank you for saving me hundreds upon hundreds in lessons! (Not that i could find any lessons where i live within 12 months!) Do you see any merch or anything that i can buy as a thank you?
That's great to hear and congratulations on passing! I don't have any merch yet but I do have the super thanks button near the like button if you're feeling generous.
5:20 shouldn't he stopped for few seconds? As the car approached? To see what is doing, same as if a car was coming from the back, or if a pedestrian is around.
12:44 he gets marked for no signal, am i wrong in thinking you don't have to signial if you're going straight on? -EDIT: he states thats only for mini ones at 13:56 for anyone wondering
17:12 What if you double clutch rev match? My civic has insanely tall gearing such that 1st in between a normal car's 1st and 2nd and 2nd is between a normal car's 2nd and 3rd. 3rd may as well be 4th. I have to downshift to 1st any time I go under 10 mph otherwise the engine will shake and buck violently. I rev match to help it in and it goes in like butter if I do a good job, even at 25 mph.
