Electric cars are great, but they suck on road trips, right? According to a poll on my channel, the majority of drivers don't want to drive more than 500 miles in a day. If I can drive double that, 1,000 miles, in a day, surely electric cars make a bit more sense for the masses than we might think? We'll look at how long it takes to drive 1,000 miles in a Tesla Model 3 Performance. We'll also cover how much time is spent driving versus charging, how many stops are required, how much energy is required, and how much it all costs.
We'll also look at why I've kept my Tesla Model 3 over the past couple years, looking at the unique features that set Tesla apart from the competition, but also cover the features that aren't great and hold the car back a bit.

It seems like there's an on-going overhaul for the auto-wipers known as 'Auto-wipers V3'. It looks like they'll be using more cameras than just the single one on the windshield to determine the weather better. I was in a branch where we believed this was in use and the auto-wipers seemed to work perfectly fine, it's a good sign! :)

well given he started with 1 significant figure (1000) and this is a pretty low precision test/point, yep 970 rounded to 1 sigfig is 1000 and good enough. The issue with the 0-60 times isn't the accuracy of the measurement, 2.1 seconds for example, it's that the 2.1 seconds isn't actually a 0-60 time. it's 0-60 but the time starts after the first 1 foot. This is how NHRA drags work, and is at least mostly consistent in the industry, but it's still mis-labeled. Maybe "60mph drag" or "60MPH launch" would be better.

I've marthoned across Canada a couple times. It's really hard to make more than 800 km or so in a day even if you stop for nothing but gas and sleep. You're gonna end up over 8 hours most times. Long time without a break. Most people don't do that. The reality is EV's won't change most people's travel times in the slightest, and they'll have the added benefit of being a little more rested after the trip.

I drove 1200 miles last year in my T-M3, Miami to D.C. ... Took me 18 hours instead of my usual ice 16 hours. Which makes sense b/c of the 30min stops to charge, about 4 times. This was a summer event and the AC was on the whole time.

@jeffcantor3298 3 года назад
The longest time I ever drove "non-stop" was 18 hours right after college and the only reason I was able to drive that long was I was pulling a UHaul trailer and had to stop for gas every four hours. Those forced stops - which were a bit longer than a regular gas stop as I would check the trailer connections and check the oil etc - were what refreshed me and made the trip possible. Using that same logic, I believe that EVs are actually the better/safer choice for long road trips even if they might take a little longer time wise. The longest I've done in my EV so far is about 250 miles but I have a potential 400 mile trip this summer.

@@RagnorBC Indeed - as an engineer myself, I'd say they were describing a scientist, who wants to win an award by being the one who achieves the best/furthest/fastest, etc. And engineer is, in my view, a practical and pragmatic scientist, who works to achieve a realistic goal. Once that was achieved, or I knew it would be (i.e. driving that extra 30 miles was unnecessary), I'd move onto my next task (in that case, having something to eat/getting some rest). Occasionally they'll be engineers who go much further (I am somewhat of a perfectionist, but some bosses confuse 'doing a good job' with perfectionism and 'doing an acceptable job' with cutting corners on quality of work. This has happened in many industries - which is why so many cars have lots of niggly problems these days - mainly with the new tch, as owners are now considered to be defacto beta testers, because R&D time has been reduced in order to compete on getting tech out ahead of rivals. Cars designed and built 15-20 years ago had far less of these problems, and didn't need regular 'updates' to correct flaws.

On the "more leeway when charging"... on a trip two weeks ago. I left the SC when it said I would have 13% at the next SC. I had 2% when I got there... It was straight highway, I wasn´t driving hard, It wasn´t hot or cold... the only guess I have is a headwind. I like the more leeway... It is usually much better than that, but once it a while it gets it wrong, and I´d rather not get stuck.
@pepstein
@pepstein 3 года назад
The car will eventually warn you to slow down in order to reach the next charger. You can use the Trip tab on the Energy screen to see how you're doing. If the prediction is trending too close for comfort, you can slow down early, and if you're more efficient than originally predicted you can speed up. Arriving with lower state of charge will get you faster charging. But strong headwinds can mess up such plans, as slowing down 5 or even 10 MPH may not be enough. Sometimes it's better to be safe than sorry.

Since getting my Model 3 nearly 3 years ago, I've driven five 1000+ mile days on my biennial migrations to and from Arizona. It amazes me how practical it is for the reasons you explained in this excellent video. I will say that I have Navigate on Autopilot which works very well. I can literally drive between charging stops, on ramp to off ramp rarely having to intervene. I just rest my hand on the wheel at 5 or 7 o'clock and let Autopilot do all the work. BTW, 1. Pushing the left stock initiates the wipers. 2. Autopilot does lane changes so well now. Blind spots are not a problem at all. I use it all the time. 3. No EV is going to match the EPA range estimate when driving at 75 or 80 mph, into a headwind, or when it's cold or raining . My lifetime efficiency is 259 wH/mile. With a 75 kWh usable battery pack in my Mode 3 that's gives and average maximum range of 289 miles. I can't think of another EV that bestsTesla's efficiency.

Most will be happy to follow Tesla's guidance as you described, but it's often possible to reduce total charging time by: • charging less at each stop, so you arrive at the next charger with 5-10% remaining • stopping more frequently when charger spacing allows, so you don't have to charge above 70% A Better Route Planner (app or website) can help figure out the optimal strategy, and the Trip tab on the Energy screen in the car can help you adjust your speed as needed to avoid range anxiety.

I agree with most of what you said. If you push the left stalk button in, quickly so as not to squirt fluid, the wipers swipe. Do that a couple of times in light rain, then futz with the cards on the screen for changing the wiper settings. The car will go 300 miles on the highway, if you first charge at home to 100%, you drive around the speed limit, on relatively flat terrain, without headwinds, with a light load, in moderate temperatures, and land it perfectly at a supercharger. Any of those variables less, you get less range. After the first charge is gone, it’s quickest to charge to around 50%-60% and move onto the next supercharger. In a sample 400 mile drive from Philly to Raleigh down the east coast I-95, I selected 2-3 super chargers of 16 available.

Better, your 20 minute pit stop isn't 12 minutes spent fueling and 8 minutes in the restroom. It's a minute plugging in and the rest leisurely taking a break, knowing that extra minutes just results in a few extra percent of charge rather than a 1-for-1 delay getting to your destination.

That trains the NN to help improve the auto-wiper system as they now use the FSD to detect when to clean the windshield. Does the Tesla software keep track of stalls broken vs. working, vs. typical expected usage, and let you know ahead of time? E.G. it could forecast that 100% of the working stalls are expected to be in use, in which case there might be a queue of unknown length.
