boxers actually do punch harder than mma guys. boxers punch harder than any of the other martial arts, for pretty obvious reasons as people below are pointing out. kickboxing even falls short to boxing as to punching power, positioning and other aspects.
@tenshin2002
@tenshin2002 4 года назад
If you only rely on your hands, to be succesful you need lots of speed and reflexes (as well as timing and technique). Because, if you only can win by touching the other guy with the hands. The other guy has less things to look for and be prepared for. So a really good boxer therefore will have higher hand speed than any other martial artist. Momentum energy is defined by the mass times the velocity. So it means that the power you generate in a punch is dependent on the mass of your fist (arm) and the velocity of the fist at the time of the impact. In short, by that reasoning a really good boxer will generate more power than any other martial artist in their punch . BUT: To be successful as an offence boxer you either need to be very very fast and/or very deceptive. If you have the twitch speed in your hands you might not need as much deception, but if you are slower in your hands you might be very good at deception. Then you have the counter boxer, relying more on reflexes and striking the openings that the oponent provides. Here reflexes and timing is more important than speed. So I guess this is what Ramsey is trying to say. Its not a given that a boxer always will be punching harder than other martial artists, but they will be leagues a head in timing/deception and positioning in a fist fight.
@7dayspking
@7dayspking 4 года назад
@@tenshin2002 You're looking at this too simplistically, it's possible some elite boxers punch faster sure. Punching faster isn't always or necessarily the difference between missing a punch and landing it solidly. Your ability to read or determine when a punch you throw will land or learning how to create an opportunity for a punch to land is extremely important. It's why even between two boxers with clear differences in punch speed that fights go rounds rather than seconds before one finds a way to hit and knock the other guy out. They need that time to learn when their opponent can be hit or for one of them to make a mistake that gets them hit. If it was just a simple equation of speed and power...all fights would be over nearly instantly. Punching power is not just the mass of your arm times it's speed. If you've ever flicked your arm out as fast as you can and just let it hit something you've probably experienced that there's not a lot of power on it. If you were to literally throw an arm at something it wouldn't hit exceptionally hard. That's basically just slapping or smacking something. Your hardest punches are not your fastest ones, you have to sacrifice quite a bit of speed to hit with serious power...when people are throwing their deadly punches everyone is doing it slowly. Look at Marcos Maidana.

@7dayspking
@7dayspking 4 года назад
@@tenshin2002 Right, well mine's there if you want to respond to it. I know what you said later in your comment, I responded to that in the lower part of mine. Guess I could do a quick summary. Hand speed does not determine success for an offensive fighter, fighters take time to learn when their opponent is able to be hit effectively and from where they can hit them. Punching power is not directly related to the maximum speed you're able to throw your arm out and is more complicated than just the size of your arm and speed you can throw it at. hard punches are often slow, so hand speed isn't determining who's knocking people out.
@tenshin2002
@tenshin2002 4 года назад
@@7dayspking I said hand speed is important for an offencive boxer, more so than a counter puncher. I also stated that deception has a big part in connecting a punch as well. Obviously if you are an offencive boxer you need to create openings with your offence. Hence deception. And if your hands are fast you will be more successfull. You cant change physics. Power is mass times velocity. How you generete that power differs. So a slow "hard" punch means you have to compensate the lack of velocity with mass, thats why more muscles are used to deliver the power and thus are creating a lager mass. So depending on your physique it might be easier to achive great punching impact by "generating more mass" through more muscles in the body. Whilst other boxers have more explosive muscle tissue and can generate more speed to achieve the same impact. Obviously you want to combine the two and generate as much mass and speed as possible when power punching.

It's a sport. It's a hobby. Yes for some it's employment. Can a badminton player out serve a tennis pro. Does it really matter. Some of the best traits of boxing are in evasion, not hitting. Lomachenko, Willie Pep come to mind. The thing to learn from boxing is footwork, distancing, getting angles. I'd rather see a boxer who could get the angles and deal with an opponent with a relatively modest power punch than a slugger, TBH.

Punching a person who is trying to not be punched is even more difficult, and if they know how to punch hard, how to avoid being punched hard, and are trying to punch you hard... All that being said, depends on the fighter and how they train.

An MMA guy doesn't have enough hours in the day to train perfectly in any one thing. A pro boxer may well be able to strike harder, because their entire regiment, diet and training regime is optimised for them to be able to do that. I'd hazard a guess that someone who spends their life only training in BJJ will be better and probably more tuned to BJJ than nearly all Mixed Martial Artists. It's not a 'one is better than the other' situation, and people always get bogged down in that and take things personally. People are always so concerned with 'this vs that' and winning, that they can never accept that everything is good at what it's meant for and everything has a place. Even Wing Chun may save someone's life if someone attacked them and they understood how to use it, so does it matter that it isn't the best, maybe it's okay if it does its job (I don't train in Wing Chun). If you're driving around the city, what is better, a Prius or an F1 car. Food for thought. Many things are just bad, but many things just have a specific purpose. Wing Chun was off the top of my head, I'm not championing it.

I think it's more than just pugilistic skills that allows the better punches. The boxer doesn't have to worry about takedowns and extends more with their punches. Their technique is better too. They turn their punches over better and are better balanced for punching only. They also put their hips into their punches better. The mma fighters throw a lot of arm punches. Again, this is because of the possibility of a takedown. The mma fighter will not leave themselves out there with longer punches that require the turning of the hip and torso. The recovery time to defend a takedown is slower for the boxer's punches. The tradeoff is the boxer's punches are more powerful because of the body mechanics. If the boxer throws a straight (rear hand) and misses, it's nearly impossible to avoid double underhooks from the opponent. The same goes for defending a double leg or any shoot. With an arm punch you can bring your elbows to your torso faster to defend a grappling situation.

This whole myth of fighters tanking punches is ridiculous. Of course you can get more used to getting hit in the head and remaining in the fight, but a full-on punch to the face isn't something you can train to just simply take. You can't put skill points into fortitude or whatever in real life, it's all about the skill of minimizing the damage the hits you don't manage to avoid do by moving with them or making them glance off instead of transferring that force into your brain, and like you said, not getting yourself into positions where the opponent has a clear line to throw a punch you can't mitigate.

Similarly, for my arms, I realized that leaving my wrists and forearms loose, while I keep my elbows and triceps closer to my body (as if you wanna engage your lats or something) helps my shoulders not get stiff and tired as quickly. It's not about "handling the punch"; it's about handling the opponent's punching skill and not being tagged flush in the first place. Elite MMA fighters have no business trying to outbox elite boxers because their skill levels simply aren't comparable - a jack of all trades usually comes up short versus a specialist in their field, in anything. Regardless of who can outbox him, take on Doug Marcaida in a knife fight and you'll get the idea.

Yeah pure boxers are far better boxers than mma practitioners. However boxing doesn't exactly translate to standup that involves kicks! Kicks can mess you up in different distances way before a lot of pure boxing comes into play. I also agree that most people with training could KO someone given they land a clean punch, but as someone who was tkod and concussed fairly badly by a head kick in a recreational mma class (yes that training partner is questionable) I will say that imo, a shin coming up and blasting you in the face (trust me the padding barely did anything) probably has more power than the vast majority of punches ever thrown by professional boxers. Couldn't even walk right a month later and had headaches for a year and minor memory issues that I don't expect to ever disappear. Still healed back to 80% though.

I think nobody can take a punch from heavy weight boxer OR MMA fighter if you literally just stand still in some kind of "contest of toughness", its simple physics -> the impact from the moving mass of the attacker focused all on the fist (English is my second language, but I hope you know what I mean) will cause to much dmg to internal organ or brain (depends where the hit is) for the defender to not get KOed. You simply can't train your internal organs or brain for impact resistance imho.

No one said MMA fighters are invincible, but Ray winning 1 out of 4 non-boxing fights doesn't mean much. MMA fighters or even kickboxers would still beat equivalent boxers 8/10 times. We've seen too much evidence to still argue about this in 2019. As for your other examples, Israel is extremely proficient in defensive wrestling and has shown a dangerous guard off his back. Maurice Smith became a very skilled grappler after training with Frank Shamrock, after Ken choked Maurice out. They wouldn't have accomplished what they did if they only knew kickboxing. @StyleTime
@StyleTime 4 года назад
@@KWillo I hear ya, but "handling" a punch means different things. Idiotic Tirades injected some nuance by pointing out the practical answer. In a fight, the boxer will have a hard time landing the perfect shot. As with Randy/Toney or Royce/Jimmerson, the threat of other attacks makes most boxers lose their stance, which nullifies the threat of the power punch. In this sense, yes, an elite MMA fighter can "handle" an elite boxers punch by removing the punch completely. If you just mean the MMAtist eats the hit, then the question is mostly moot imo. An elite MMA fighter could KO a boxer under the same circumstance. A powerful bar brawler could probably KO either of them too. Obviously, the boxer WILL land sometimes, and the threat varies based on the boxer's style. Deontay Wilder would be utterly terrifying and could probably score early KO's on several good MMAtists(especially ones that don't clinch or ground grapple much). Tyson Fury might struggle though, due to his style.

Because Mike Tyson's presence alone was so intimidating. But along came the likes of Buster Douglas & Evander Hollyfield. They were prepared both mentally & physically. They beat the best because they had the skills & confidence to win. And they did.

I think that boxers have better footwork that enables them to have better angles and pivoting, which in turn results to way more effective punches. But, in a MMA scenario their footwork is not safe to use, lest they get kicked to the legs or get thrown/grabbed. So MMA fighters have to resort to a different approach in positioning and pivoting that leads to an apparently poorer boxing… A tradeoff if you will, but an effective one - in the overall economy of a fight - Of course it's just my opinion

Well coach elite pro boxers have mastered the kinetic liking when it comes to punching too get the max torque, leverage and snap in the punch. In my experience as amateur boxer going pro with in a year time. I would say with all due respect many MMA fighters don’t see punching as complex as pro boxers probably because of the risk of takedowns, kick counters ect. So I’m pretty sure if we measured the top boxers and MMA fighters in their classes the boxers on average would punch quite harder even the stance has a role in punch power boxers are more bladed to get more torque. MMA is more squared stance. But we do see in MMA the best punchers like Francis favors boxing with striking defense same with Woodley both always had a love for boxing train it separated as big part of their regiment. And both those are genetically blessed ofc. Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder vs Francis’s punching power on a measurement device in this case all of them are genetically blessed. I’m very sure the technique component would give the boxers quite higher score.

I think kinematic pairs and chains are what you're looking for. I always wondered why they put electronics in a physical test anyway, besides the read out being in vague "units" the electronics being used make me skeptical. I make prosthetics, I hardly ever use anything like an accelerometer for something like impact force because there is no point in doing all that conversion math when I can just take a physical problem, analyze it physically, and not have to convert secondary data to find the primary answer. If I told you how many kilowatt hours a fighter hits for that's be basically meaningless outside of number size because comparing a strike to a zap is a bit difficult for the mind to imagine. If I told you how many foot-pounds you could then compare it to more comparable results found in firearms and automobiles. I don't see what is wrong with hitting a weight and seeing how much it moves and I do see plenty of room for BS with using speed to figure out power, energy, or force. Either they're experts and know exactly how to measure punches, and so don't need a silly machine, or, they're not and they lack the ability to make sense of their own readings, either way the punch machine is kinda useless. lol, sorry I babbled, my point was good post bud. Got me to think anyway.
@emiliox210
@emiliox210 4 года назад
MrRoccoMarchegiano When I say the kinetic chain in a punch I don’t mean the measurement of punch force. The kinetic chain in a punch is the generated and transfer of force from the ground via the legs through the hips and core out the chest too shoot out the arm with all that force and then flex hand right before impact. Btw the technique is way more complex that but just to explain the basic on the kinetic chain in a punch. When it comes to measure punch force iknow the punch machines with the ball/bag at bars and gamestores that gives out a score are not true force measurement they are only using an accelerometer and gyroscope that don’t in account the size of the puncher. So I guess some thing more is needed to measure? Many you know? Speed X Mass = Punch Force

Boxing and Wrestling are among the oldest, most time-tested combat sport/arts in humanity. I maintain that an MMA fighter that focuses primarily on these will ve LIGHT YEARS ahead of ones working with BJJ and Karate. Of course one has to also practice defense against kicks and work on submitting the opponent but the primary skills of wrestling and boxing would be more of a benefit over time than 2 systems that are questionable as a wrap around skipl set at such a youthful phase of development. Hell, BJJ gi and no-gi is probably the worst thing Ive ever seen as far as closing distance, taking initiative and getting an opponent to the ground first in control.....its just horrible. Its a great secondary skill though once you have the opponent to the ground.
