Madam Secretary was a powerful show about American politics that ended in 2019. But it was a powerful propaganda tool for explaining how politics and a democracy ought to run, where government works for the people and not against them. The show follows Elizabeth McCord, Secretary of State and Hilary Clinton look-a-like who actually has a philosophy she sticks to, as she navigates international affairs as well as domestic politics in post-Trump America. With the help of her trusty sidekick husband, Henry, a professor of religious ethics, Elizabeth finds moral and spiritual guidance to do what is right for all. Together, along with other members of the government, she faces down enemies of the state from the abstract in the form of climate change and epidemics to the tangible in Russia and China. We also see the inner workings of the military, intelligence and campaigning for elections. Elizabeth is a politician, who unlike most politicians, is out to help as many people as possible. From the U.S. leaving Afghanistan to war with Russia in Ukraine, Madam Secretary has also predicted the future years before it has happened. Acting as both a guide for politicians in modern times and an accurate predictor of issues facing America in this decade, Madam Secretary nails down the importance of adapting to America's changing role in the world. No longer number one in all fields, America's political ideology is it's strength. Unlike other parts of the world, despite it's age, America has a unique government and stable institutions. By embracing our democracy, flaws and all, Madam Secretary shows that America can still be a leader in our brave new world. In this TV analysis, we will attempt to learn real life lessons on how our real life government can do better.
