Derren takes on a psychologist in a battle of wits. Can he outsmart him? For more subscribe to our channel - / officialderren #DerrenBrown #DerrenBrownMiracle #DerrenBrownShowman
For some reason this video got me thinking of a guy who tricked a psychology board into thinking he was a psychopath, and got admitted to a mental hospital, but after he was admitted he could never get out because when he was being his normal self, the board thought he was trying to manipulate them into thinking he was sane.
S. P. Spatafore Because that would not be entertaining He does not try to trick you, in fact he did admit this He just wants to entertain his audience (and so he can be popular/famous/rich)
I would love to have him 1:1 do something like this to me, as I’ve been to see his shows and he is still very much as amazing as on a television screen, and it is a little shocking to watch him in real life and then still he does truly make you think he is some magical wizard, yet he has always given disclaimers pre-entertaining as to how “showman ship” and when broken his live shows down, after reading his books too, he is still a master at his art, but he is truthfully honest in showman ship, he has merged magicians slight of hand, a stage showman, distraction techniques with depth into the psychology of how much the mind is easy tricked etc and he trained in hypnosis which is very real to see in person, as I am not easily able to be hypnotised, watching him as he did to someone who is actually a real person who actually is susceptible to it and he is doing that, I changed my mind on whether hypnosis was real or not but watching in real life and you can see that the people are not faking, it’s not like a list of ways in saying how so, but if you know that subtle feeling like truly you know when a lie or a honest expression comes with those tiny things that subconsciously give you gut instinct, it’s that kinda way, but he can hypnotise I feel as they just were not faking or playing along... the depth of psychology though is how he manages so much of what he does as it’s a scare to see how easily the brain is flawed, can be manipulated or misses the ‘obvious’ things and we all do just these things, he has a great craft as putting these aspects all together is alone a worthy entertaining watch but the way he flips 10 coins on a row to come head up, he just had to film the entire process until he finally got ten in a row, a lot of his tv shows are based on filming and editing but not to say he is completely as fascinating in real life too, he just is master of this art and if ever you have watched up close magician with cards and their slight of hand, it is completely not a skill in itself of practise and practise to perfect such movement it is completely unnoticed but that is just simply a skill anyone could learn still, but yeah i am myself still not going to be mindblown unless he was one on one and did something that I couldn’t even explain myself - would be great! Sadly being so observant of the psychology and magicians hands myself as a separate interest I am just a further way from being anywhere near susceptible to a hypnotist as well, I would love to be and then have someone like him to do so on me, his early books explain so much in psychological explaining that studying subject academically, before techniques came after, I was able to just make a show of ‘how my memory is actually amazing and not like anyone else’s’ by using a couple of his taught psychology only - techniques were to explain these to oeveryone else, they had about 2 minutes of class fame, but these were remembered and used as real life test or near enough, as asked how I was doing such things afterwards echo the two of three short term memory techniques which Hey, it was real and actually worked out until they were explained and then not at all overwhelming to anyone lol I recommend these if you fancy diving into things he can teach in real life by reading his psychology book of which they need to label them as ‘hacks’ to be fair, they are just that!
@@cherylbaker3319 you know it's a possibility that Derren just edits this video? By actually asking the man to say "water ski", then slicing it into the video as though it's random.
If he gets you interested in psychology, that's great, but the majority of the actual effects on his shows are illusions and nothing more. It's a lot of clever editing, hard work, showmanship, and a bit of luck. I have a pretty good idea how to reproduce the first trick. The psychiatrist couldn't see the fact that Derren was just writing words down after he said them, and swapping the order of the pages after to make them look like predictions. The wide shots we see can be done using split screen since the camera doesn't move. The footage on the left is played out of order, with close up shots of Derren to account for the response time difference in each word. He used a more sophisticated application of this principle in the lottery prediction.
YES look at his face ..... on 8/16/2017 He looks 30 years older Totally bald and every bone on his face is noticeable. I am amazed that with schedule he has the "spare time" to paint masterpieces. But , boy YA GOTTA REST! .
I get nervous about being hypnotized watching these videos. Like I'm gonna wake up one night in an empty warehouse in Bristol doing the chicken dance or something lol.
Never get tired of this man. . Unreal. . Did anyone see the episode when he went to the dog track, places his bet, lost, went to the hatch and got paid off his losing docket? I thought to myself 'hold on a minute here' .. I'm doing something wrong ha ha ha ha ha
He didn't say "opposite." He asked him to think of words he doesn't associate with the given word. I certainly wouldn't have made that association. I imagine people who went to private schools might, though.
I imagine Derren talked to him or did some things with his environment before this was done to plant some suggestions in his mind. Notice there's an orange lava lamp on the ground and the first word Derren expects him to say is orange.
Good spot on the orange lamp. It was interesting that the psychologist went for another fruit, I wonder if 'suit' was chosen to rhyme and cause an association while sounding like something completely different.
I really hope this guy is genuine every time, as its tempting to relieve the pressure of always needed to perform close to perfection to do credit to his reputation he has build up
Impressive abilities, i was skeptical of this but in hindsight and rewatching his videos i am convinced, Derren is great at what he does aside from his charisma and showmanship his humility is very evident and he really cares about his participants and audience's.
Yeah I was gonna say, these are tests from the 1910s-1950s, no one does this shit anymore, so that was a tip off this psychologist is either a plant or just wants really to fit in and I’m not convinced of his credentials
3:53 "feel free to try and CATS MEOW" (Instead of "catch me out", planting the cat into his subconscious through NLP technique). Anyone else catch it? You can also see when derren turns around and grabs the paper, right after that, a mug on the table of a cats face with its tail up in the air as the handle. Derren manipulated him into thinking of something in the room (left brain constructed vs right brain remembered) and then subconsciously pushed him to look and think of a the cat mug by further planting the "cats meow" subtle cue that threw off his subconscious but not so much where his consciousness would detect it.
Hmm, I really must try and drop more puns into my day to day routine! That way I can influence people to do what I want! That is how Derren does it, right? Just throw some random words in your speech and people will subconsciously pick up on it? Right guys?
@@mcewb726 unless he wrote CAT - simple and easily readable at a glance word - on his hand and made sure the dr has seen it at subconscious level. Then drawing a cat from the side with tail up is obvious for non-cartoonists as those are differentiating features from what otherwise could look like a dog.
Superb showman, saw live about 3years ago was absolutely outstanding. It's great to see that little smirk on his face when he gets it right, just proves he's not a fake.. great
Funny, but my first reaction to the "dissociative drawing" was a cat. But then again, it might have been a coincidence, or I had certainly seen the show before, and it might have just bubbled up from my memory. Still, gives you chills when you think "cat", and Derren says, "Clearly, not a dog, but a cat".
One time I got really spooked because he was talking to the dead and I thought to myself 'hey mabey my aunt will come up' and then he asked a lady with the same name as my aunt what the name of the ghost he was talking to was and it was my name.
Also when you "catch something out" it looks surprised. A cat is associated with raising its tail when it's surprised and "caught out'. So it's a double meaning and has extra power on his thoughts
@@beingofstrange This is edited down for time, you've no idea how long he was with this guy working him for this bit. I imagine there was a whole lot more. Hardly simple.
Hello. I'm going to hypnotize you into sending me your life savings. If we start by telling me your credit card details and pin number we can get started. Nah just kidding! I'm being silly lol
I don't know how he does this however, if I was to do this the only way I could think of achieving this would be to use the "one ahead principle" then use split screen editing to make it look like I was getting the answers correct. Ps I love Derren Brown 🙂
The psychologist is unknowingly hypnotised, the words and drawings have been implanted into his subconscious. At the start when he sits on the couch, Derren is touchy feely putting him into a hypnotised state.
you can see the split screen in action. At around 3:05 there is a ghost artifact near the Dr's left hand that is not there earlier on at 1:27. A few seconds later at 3:09, after a quick cutaway, the ghost is now part of the Dr's coat that has fallen off the couch. It probably fell off earlier on than revealed and the ghosting was left there due to slightly sloppy editing.
regardless of the trick played out on this video, it's the comments on here that fascinate me more. Maybe it's just coincidence many people thought of the same things.
Good spot, and there's a pen present when the bent paper is not visible. Therefore it wasn't a continuous film. I dunno what else one can deduce from that??
Half an hour of previous private introductory conversation must have occured, not recorded in the video, during which Derren kept implanting indirect suggestions into the subconscious mind of this Psychologist, using diverse techniques.
A few years back i got completely obsessed with NLP and beleived all the hype. Its 100% a powerful communication tool but Derren himself has stated his amusement with those of us that think he does his tricks (yes they are tricks) by some kind of subliminal word insertion. He slips them in for a laugh
Yes thank you!!! The :"explanations" are a part of the "trick" it'self! As an clinical psychologist or anyone even near this field knows that free association or projective test aren't even used, if a clinician did (and I can't imagine why they would) they would gain info that would be extremely subjective, basically useless from a scientists point of view. Same with NLP, if you know anything about it you're aware that it is in no way capable of what Darren "suggests", but he never truly states what techniques he is using. He simply references different tests, techniques, and things that would sound to most as something that he could be using to illicit the results he wants. Example: NLP techniques things that can be used by anyone and can be a good tool in communication etc. This is what makes him so incredibly entertaining to most and leaves people often forgetting that he admits he is "tricking" us and often others on his shows (although I don't believe we are always being "tricked" to believe the same thing...watch The Push. I believe we (the audience) believed one thing was taking place, while the people that were having the "experiment" done on them believed something very different was taking place. Making the choice to Push some one different for them, than for us...believing they thought they were pushing someone to there death. Both us (audience) and the participants were equally surprised and had genuine reactions but he is creating two different realities. We see only the one he wants us to. He does this in many, many of his Special shows(the heist for sure, and also the Sacrifice). This is difficult to explain and I certainly do not know "how" or "what" he is doing we are only seeing one side, BUT that does not mean he is using actors or stooges. The participants and the audience both are being "tricked" just in different ways. I do know that the amount of work, time, money put into these shows is tremendous and if we were somehow to find out ALL the many facets of it we would have wished we had just enjoyed the TV show :) At least that has been the case for me in other "tricks"(Certainly NOT an of DB's) where I have learned of the "secret". Really just a crazy amount of work and not just 1 secret a massive plan that requires far more than I could have ever imagined and at the end I wish I did not know.
This is how I think he did the last one. Right hand was up in the air for a while (cats tail being upright) and was in a claw form. He also said "catch me out" which sounds like Cat-ch Meow-t. And then he makes a point of turning to the side, and overdramatises it. Thats how I'm guessing he made the guy think of a side on cat with its tail up.
Interesting! Notice there is one discrepancy - Derren describes a cat with its head turned to the side; the psychologist says 'yes', but he's described a cat with its head turned to face him. (This is a very minor point obviously!)
The camera framing allows a really simple stitching of Derren writing the previous answer on the card to his query. He then only needs to remember the previous response and get a few wrong for effect
OMG I thought he would draw a picture of a cat, then I thought of a tree. I pictured a cat face rather than a cat turned to the side with its tail in the air, but still... My heart rate just spiked!
He had the phrase "cat with tail in the air looking at the camera" on his hand and was surreptitiously flashing it at the guy leading up to the drawing experiment.
He doesn't use any on his live performances, only in shows where OBVIOUSLY he uses actors, like when he convinces a guy to save the entire plane and land it. You'd have to be dumb to not realise that, or really fkn dumb if you had to look it up on the internet...Oh wait
No no no way bro! Just before he wrote buffalo I was thinking of the word Ox. I was trying to pull out a random word and I thought of an ox. He must have done some subliminal shit to get the guy to say buffalo and it made me think of an ox instead.
If you pay attention to what's going on here it's actually a hilarious interaction: The psychologist immediately caught the attempt at programming when Derren laid him down & touched his shoulders, making an illogical suggestion in an attempt to get him looking forward - and you can see the psychologist not only disobey but try to make eye contact as if to say "oh, this trick? you're about to embarass yourself, buddy - abort" The reason he said "apple" was to give Derren, not the opposite of "suit", but the opposite of the answer he wanted (orange), thereby secretly communicating in no uncertain terms "you're fucked bud" lol Was very kind of the Dr to play along rather than call him out - but the answer was no, he can't fool a clynical psychologist. Just wish Derren had been more honest with us that he had failed.
What was the illogical suggestion? Why does this program 'orange'? Are you saying the psychologist knew what Derren would predict for the other rounds and played along? That's even more impressive
lmao, saying you can't read a person by pretending that you read the person in the video and are now telling us what he was thinking and doing. The stupidity and hypocrisy of this comment is astounding. Also, an apple is not the opposite of an orange you clown it's actually much closer to an orange than a suit.
@@anvil0702 Your IQ is about 88. You were never considered intelligent, even by your parents (fact), and certainly not by your peers nor teachers. You were a stupid boy, and you are still a stupid boy here and now. Everyone knows this but you, stupid boy. For, if you knew this, you would not advertise your stupidity, boy. How do you feel?
i need to know what that couch is, so comfortable and by the time the hands are on the shoulders it's already too late. the fascinating thing about derren brown is that most of this is not designed to trick that guy but to trick us! there are so many things about this set that are designed to make a veiwer try to get how the trick is done, even the emphasis on certain words is made to be noticed, the TV show is the actual trick. the only critasizm I have is the folly for the writing with pen is massivley obvious
Ok so I’ve seen derren live and he’s brilliant, however I’ve never experienced his talent first hand until this video. I am only at 2:52 at the moment however I played along as if I was the guy in the chair and I just said jet ski too.... this is insane.
I reckon the guy hadn't actually thought of a cat, but Derren managed to convince him that he had. If he really had thought of a cat (or whatever) Derren would have asked him to record this (in writing or another picture) so that we would have been amazed. Or Derren would have written it down and had the bloke say it out loud As it is, we only have the psychologists's word for it that he had indeed been picturing a cat. Ergo, the "magic" was how Derren managed to convince him into acquiescing at the end. And I think it began at the moment Derren pressed his hands onto his shoulders. In other acts, Derren often uses touch to influence people.
the cat part is mostly NLP, he performed a similar trick in 'The Gathering' where the subject was told to draw the secret image and it was a cat... if you watch back there are certain cues that put cat in his head.
at 2:10, and 2:22 you can see the shadow on the guys chair moving when Darren isn't. the predicting Darren is edited in the right half of the sceen! not that i needed to see that to know that this was the only possible way he could have done it. he's tricking the guy with the simple "don't write anything until he says the word" idea to show the guy his guesses at the end which will make it look like he guessed 100% right, while also trying to trick the audience that he wrote it beforehand. notice that he's not showing the guy his guess immediately, only the audience, because he couldn't possibly do so without editing his future self in.
@@staceykeeley4219 It's a rapid hypnosis induction technique. The weird and slangy word is out of place and because it's also an object the psychologist will unintentionally visualise it. It will create just enough confusion in the mind of the psychologist to bypass the conscious critical faculty and accept Derren Brown's suggestions uncritically. That then allows Brown to start planting the suggestions that will give him the answers he's looking for.
For those who are wondering why he tore off the pages and wasted paper, he didnt "waste" it. It was necessary because of a similar magic trick. You can ask them to think of something, pretend you wrote it, tell them to answer, then ask them to think something else while you write their first answer. "But its on video ", the angle of the camera was ambiguous, so they could try the notion of video played backwards or manipulating the footage. By tearing it off, he can deny that notion. Pretty clever if you think about, especially consdiering he is actually manipulating thought, and its not a cheap parlour trick like Chris Angels.
I had another secret image, but my "dissociation" would also be a tree. I guess most people would draw a tree if asked to draw something simple without to much detail
1:02 This is where he plants the thought of the cat facing forward. When Derren says “it’s important that you...” he touches his shoulders when he says “you” but actually says “to.” That sets the word “to” and briefly afterwards, you can hear Derren” drag out the word “tooo” a couple of times before he makes suggestions of eyes open or closed and facing forward.
mentalists want you to believe that they're using the power of suggestion, but if you think about how complex thought is, it's simply impossible to suggest anybody ANYTHING with 100% certainty that they will choose your suggestion. for example, "sUbLiMiNAl MeSsAgEs" wooooo!, do not actually work. what happens is that a person MIGHT subconsciously identify a pattern that a subliminal message is occuring more frequently. while this does indeed make that pattern more fresh in their mind, it does NOT force them to choose it, because we actually DO have the freedom to choose despite what some absurd philosophers may say.
Holy fuck. I was honest to god imagining a tree and wanted to draw a cat before they started taking about a cat or i saw the drawing, just opposite of the psychologist. How tf...
Ooo i love this man, so clever check it out at 03:53 he says try and think of something to catch meow instead of catch me out. Beacsue he was a professional psychiatrist he didn't use anything too obvious like saying its doesn't have to be purrfect. That's all he needed, your brain will latch onto it and subliminally draw you to that which is obviously a cat. Well played sir my dream is to goto a school where he teaches this
lool try telling 100 people "think of something to catch me out" and see how many different kinds drawings you get completely unrelated to cats. ohhh and also, how was he so specific about the turning head? the power of suggestion is not happening here. this guy is 100% acting, and the trick is that you believed that he wasn't.
