You and I are going to drink a lot of coffee together. Like, borderline dangerous amounts of coffee.
So, first things first. Pour yourself a mug and I’ll introduce myself real quick.
My name’s Jordan - but everyone calls me “J” - and I’m a 27th degree black belt in chugging coffee.
I’m also strength & nutrition coach, I hold several powerlifting world records, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have my writing featured in a variety of outlets like CNN, the Huffington Post, and Schwarzenegger.com.
But listen.
This channel isn’t for fame, publicity, cash, props, fist bumps, likes, pings, pows or whatever else there is.
It’s a place where you and I can chat.
I’ll never sugar coat, lie, or beat around the bush. I’ll tell you everything exactly as I see it. Some stuff you might like. Others you might not.
And that’s totally cool.
Either way, my goal here is to create a discussion. A place where you and I can get together, exchange ideas, and motivate each other to be better every day.
Like I said, we’re gonna drink a lot of coffee together - borderline dangerous amounts - but I’m excited. Because there aren’t too many online communities in which the sole purpose is to inspire and motivate one another.
And that’s exactly what you and I are going to do here.
To your success,
-J

I had an eating disorder for 7 years. For all 7 years I did not have a period. There was a time when I could maintain my weight on what should have been a deficit, and if I ate at what should have been my maintenance, I gained rapidly because my metabolism was so well ADAPTED (not damaged). I went though recovery and got my period back and now I maintain my weight ( in healthy range) on almost twice the amount of calories I used to eat. So yeah, just a random anecdote that metabolic adaptation exists but it doesn’t have to be permanent. Glad I recovered when I did.

This gives me hope. I ate calories very close to the minimal recommended amount for a year and a half, and lost my period for most of that time. Ever since January of this year, I have been trying to recover. I just got my period back last month and I'm trying to keep going. I am holding on to extra fat in my belly and I am getting extremely hunger cues, but for now I am trying to not count calories and just let my body and myself be, and accept everything while it happens. Hopefully for now I'll continue getting better and continue getting my periods since I just got them last month for the first time in a year. It can be hard but I am so glad I chose recovery. And hopefully in the future my hunger cues will be normal again and I'll never restrict again no matter what. Thanks for the hope

wow same here i lost my period for 7 years and got it back this past april I was also going through anorexia. I went on a cut this past july and I have been only spotting these past 2 months :( so im slowly going to increase again because I dont want to lose it again, my abs are not worth losing my period.

jessica rodriguez You are right, it’s not worth it! Osteoporosis is no joke... I broke my wrist in two places wayy too easily last year. I really should go get my bone density checked out but I’m scared to know. I am also not totally sure if I can have kids. I have my period but I’m still worried something could be wrong from not having it for so long. I’ll never believe that extreme restriction is worth the consequences again. Glad to hear you are choosing to up your intake, I wish you strength and health!

I've been wondering about this for a long time since I've been living in a calorie deficit now for about 8-9 month. I've lost 20 lbs, gotten super strong and feel great. So I'm relieved to hear that I'm likely not hurting myself for the long term. Thank you Jorden! #sortinghatsqad

Thank you Jordan! I was totally in tears for like the last 12 minutes of this. I still can’t find peace with food. It’s so hard. Food has effected me since I was probably 10. I started working out in 4th grade to be skinny. And I’m naturally strong, but not naturally lean. I’ve yo-yoed my entire life. It fuckin sucks! But I follow you and I just want help and I know I can’t be alone i can’t be the only one like this! Thank you for putting this information on such a public platform! ❤️❤️❤️

I love how you're promoting healthy relationship with food! I really feel it has to be discussed more these days. I myself went through the stages of calorie counting, macro counting, food lists and food prep, etc etc. The I realised it was just taking up too much of my time, and mind, and life! Now I'm not even trying to get slimmer. Well, I'm already quite in a good shape, so I'm focusing on being healthy, moving as much as possible, and having a healthy relationship with food. I'm eating only when I feel hungry and choosing mostly healthy foods, and teaching to enjoy them (and it's working! I actually don't want hot dogs any more, I'd rather have a plate of apples and melon sprinkled with cinnamon and cacao). The next step I want to do is to go into a slight calories deficit... I've tried in the past but it didn't work very well, so this time I'm starting with a healthy relationship with food and only then going on to the deficit. #sortinghatsquad

I love your videos! Not just the knowledge you share but that you helping people, making it aware that there is no BAD FOOD, helping people with their relationship with food and to not get discouraged on their journey. I had a trainer couple years ago and she would always provide a meal plan, do measurements and weekly weigh ins. And if we didn’t make weight we would get punished (usually 300-500 calories on the stairmaster without stopping). I did not want to get punished so i followed that meal plan to a T and did all the extra cardio or whatever if i felt like i was messing up. I got punished once and it was horrible! It got to the point to where i was weighing myself daily, becoming depressed because of the number on the scale. Once my 3 months ended with her i was down 25 pounds which i was so happy about but slowly started eating what i wanted and because of not having of i in the 3 months and limiting myself to just lean meats, green veggies, rice or potatoes (literally) it turned into me binging and gaining the weight back... so mentally it ruined my relationship with food BUT thanks to your videos I’m slowly getting better. Two weeks ago I decided to really start tracking and getting back in the gym. Im in a caloric deficit and starting tracking my calories no matter the nutritional value of the food and going to the gym 2-3 times a week. Still scared to get on the scale but maybe in a month or two that will be my next step.

I wish I had heard of reverse dieting the first time I went off a very restrictive diet that lasted about two years. I didn't even start eating that much food and yet my weight spiked immediately. The worst part was how every second person I met after summer break pointed out how fat I've gotten.

I love the way you explained this. I don't believe you because you're an expert in your field, I believe you because you explain concepts so clearly that I can understand and implement them myself, and I'm no Ravenclaw! I used to have a BMI of 41.2 and I was always concerned about whether I was in too much of a deficit or doing it for too long. I was actually more concerned because of what "fitness" pages were telling me than what I felt in my own body (I was doing great!) Now my BMI is 30.3 and I'm planning to go gradually into maintenance very soon! I think taking a break from my fat loss while at the borderline between obesity and overweight is going to strengthen my mental game and reinforce that I'm doing this long term! I love you and your videos! ♥️ #sortinghatsquad

Hi there; I just wanted to share a little bit of my story. I have struggled with anorexia for about 4 years and I starved myself from 240 pounds to 110 pounds in 9 months. I lost my period. For about 6 of those 9 months I did around 30+ hours of cardio a week and ate no more than 200 calories a day. (Swim team). I remember doing a relay race(running) for school and I was freezin in August wearing 4 layers of sweatpants/shirts. I got to the end and my body gave out at the finish line and I fell. I didn’t faint but I began throwing up and writhing. My body was completely done-I couldn’t speak or hold up my head. A few weeks later I went to be hospitalized inpatient. They did illegal things to my medications and I became a little psychotic and was self harming. 3 years later and I’ve gone inpatient 13 times. My last one was April of 2019(this year) to June. I was discharged 3 months ago. I gained 30 pounds in about 1.5 months. My metabolism skyrocketed when I began eating more and I was eating around 5,000 calories and still lost weight some days. I finally have reached a healthy weight and gotten my period back after 3 years. I still have early onset osteopenia and complete bowel damage that will last a lifetime. I have maintained this healthy area however have started saving up calories and binging for that time. My healthy range was 125-135 and currently I’m about 145 and I hate myself. I feel like I can’t stop. I still have disordered eating and am still self harming because of it. I don’t have a healthy relationship with food or myself. I have a treatment team and professionals I talk to but I hate my life right now.

Newly subscribed. Very interesting content. Totally up my alley. I have trained my whole life. Functional, boxing, plyometric, strength, gymnastics etc so my muscle has always been higher than average round 28-30kg. My fat % has gone between 13% to 21% when I'm not leaning out. However when I say leaning out. All it is is when I'm starving. Long story short I had jaw surgery 8 weeks ago and food became limited cause I couldnt chew and training had reduced until the 6 week mark. I only ate pureed veggies and lean protein pureed for the 8 weeks. My weight dropped 13 kgs. My fat% dropped to 12% and my muscle dropped by 2kgs. I look so much leaner but now I can chew I started to find myself binging. In the 8 weeks I couldnt chew I found myself watching constant cheat days and would Google foods and restaurants non stop of what I'd eat when I could start chewing again. I realised my previous binge and starvation episodes had come back. Took jaw surgery to trigger it. I also lost my period. Only took 8 weeks but lost my period and its NEVER happened b4 and I'm not pregnant. Now that I'm binging and gaining water weight and bloat I am watching fitness girls and wanting to lose the weight to look leaner again. The cycle is poisonous. I am working on this mentally. To look at fitness and strength goals opposed to body image. Not that easy cause I'm 40 now and despite being australian size 8 I still think I'm not skinny or lean enough and at 12% body fat I want to go lower cause I like to look a certain way. So thanks for sharing this video. I need to learn how to not binge and eat properly. I've been battling this for over 20 yrs of my life. Literally over half of my life.

Thank you for this video! I literally just had a discussion about calories in/out and was told I would 'put on a ton of wieght if i skipped a meal' and 'you must eat 3 times a day even if you don't feel hungry'. I knew common sense prevails! However, I never really thought much about the psychological effects of cutting drastically and how all of that plays into 'metabolic damage'. Awesome video, thanks so much!

#sortinghatsquad This is so so useful. I experienced what was a dangerously extended caloric deficit that did damage my metabolism, and it was because of certain factors. I was in a caloric deficit for about a year to go down to my ideal weight, and while I should've stopped right there and then, my disordered eating led me to continue my caloric deficit for another year and it was then when I became very underweight, malnourished, muscle loss, lost my libido, period, hair, dull skin, brain stopped functioning well, and a series of health problems. So metabolic damage is possible yet it all varies depending on the circumstances. Healthy, sustainable, moderate caloric deficit was never the problem.

When I'm in ketosis, (Intermittent Fasting & keto diet) I cannot eat, and don't feel like eating, much at all. I also don't lose any weight until I go way under (850 cals) my BMR (1500). It's impossible to find guidance or information about this. All everyone says is - it's too low! No one takes a moment to really hear me. Facts: I feel great, have plenty of energy, mental clarity, aren't thinking about food all day, I'm eating highly nutritious food, and I'm losing weight. I calorie- and carb- cycle on the weekends. But still under my BMR! I put weight back on at 1200cals. I can't make sense of the numbers (other than my body has sufficient body fat to use as calories) but I'm listening to my own body now and I feel great.

Thank you for your explaining it all out. I have been researching my fitness goals, and something I have become to realize in all my problem solving situations in my life is, whatever project I'm working on is, asking myself, "what am I doing wrong?" More of a logical and inquisitive perspective than a harsh and emotional one. I have determined that more oftenly I am doing something incorrectly because I dont have all of the information. I have determined that I have been in the habit of not eating enough for so long that no matter what I do, because of lacking critical info, I fail. It's quite interesting to learn this science and realize how skewed and lacking the prior information was. I watch my spouse eat all kinds of foods and not change size and it's fascinating af. I realize now how important calories are for body function and metabolism. Thank you again for your thorough explanation and even your story about your friend. The story really helped put the information into a real world perspective. Have a great day!

I think the biggest problem around metabolic damage is the semantics.. referring to it as "damage" usually refers to it being broken or no longer fixable. Whereas we are now slowly coming to use the term Adaptation instead. Slowly but surely we are reaching more and more gen pop people and slowly busting this myth. Usually, most people who say that they have a slow metabolism or have acquired metabolic damage those who have an unhealthy amount of body fat and or don't believe in energy balance and/or have tried and failed many diets in te past therefor "they" must be broken in some way. It's the most frustrating area in the fitness industry, but don't let anyone talk you into believing you have a slow metabolism or it's broken!

May have felt slightly emotional in the end there, it is SO hard to not see quick results (or so they are claimed) on social media and not want to try it even though deep down you've tried these things 1000 times and if they've worked it was temporary and then it was back to being disgusted and disappointed. 18 years of yo-yo dieting and its still hard to talk some sense into myself. I used to feel like I was doing something wrong because my journey to health has taken a long time. I started about 2 years ago, I’m down 80lbs (20-30 more to go) and my body has completed changed from consistently working out for almost 2 years. What I’ve come to realize is that to develop sustainable healthy habits when you’ve been unhealthy for more of your life than not is hard. To learn healthy behaviors, to learn how many calories to eat so I still feel strong and not starving (which triggers me to binge) but lose consistently (about 1700 for me) has been a struggle to say the least. I love CrossFit and working out so that has definitely helped keep me motivated. It’s been a long journey but I’ve come to realize that for me it had to happen this way!

This video is soooooo good. Mind blowing really. Had to share with couple of my friends who are struggling with weight loss, and don’t understand the depth of weight loss is actually fat loss. So so good thank you. #SortingHatSquad

An extreme scenario can easily creep up. I had a busy working life few years back and I learned to ignore hunger. I ate twice a day of what I thought normal meal. Had a small salad for dinner. In 9 months I was collapsing anytime and everywhere. I didn't lose my period or hair. But it took me 3 years to recover. I never once thought I was damaging metabolism or doing anything wrong. What I didn't realise was that I was already on the lower end of bmi and not believing in the healthy range of bmi got to me. Plenty of Asian girls would be considered underweight so I thought I'd be ok. I wasn't. Be careful ladies.

First of all, thank you very much for this video! Always just perfect and to the point! Secondly, please get inside my head because while I am watching your Instagram posts and your videos, I make a promise to myself that I am going to get back my healthy relationship with food. Every time. But then, hearing the voices of my head all day, I loose all the logic and either go to one side of eating extremely little or to the other eating too much... I feel that I would love being able to workout with a person like you who at the same time understands about eating issues and also makes me feel like he is a good friend of mine! Ευχαριστώ πολύ για τις στιγμές λογικής που μου προσφέρεις :)

The content of this video was really well explained and definitely helped me to understand where I’m at now after my first bikini competition in terms of my relationship with food. Definitely want to be old looking back on all the good times I had rather than yo-yo dieting to get back to stage lean. Thanks J! #sortinghatsquad

Love this! I am following a low carb plan prescribed by a dietician and I’m not supposed to count calories, which does wonders for my mental state (calorie counting gives me anxiety) but sometimes I get a nagging feeling that I’m not eating enough despite eating when I’m hungry and eating until satiation (silly I know) just cause I don’t exactly know the number #SortingHatSquad

These struggles related to physique competitions have always reminded me of bulimia but in a way larger time scale. Either way it's always a cycle of binge and purge (purge can also be overexcercising or restricting). Hope people saw it as something equally damaging as the ED. I really enjoyed the video, thank you so much

#sortinghatsquad Thank you for this video. When listening too it I got really emotional and teary, realizing that your friends fitness journey was also my journey a couple of years ago. And it for sure destroyed me mentally but also with my body and health. After competing many health problems occurred and I dont think it would have if I had not pushed my body to extrem. Health issues I'm still struggling with, many years later. I wish I had heard this video before my competition and had a coach who was well aware of all the aspects. Thank you for all your great information!

#sortinghatsqaud So I hesitated watching this. Only because I knew what you were going to say. I fall in the category of having a poor relationship with food unfortunately. Years ago i use to eat healthy, workout and stay relatively lean. And i was happy, didnt binge and ad an occasional cheat meal . Now recently past couple years, I have been counting calories and macros trying to get to the next level. Well its works no doubt but as soon as a personal issue comes up, stress or a vacation, I binge. To the point I am uncomfortable. I need to fix my relationship with food. Ill go real hard weighing my food etc all the stuff you said and get my abs in. Then crash and burn. All learning lessons i suppose. Another great video btw. Keep it up. Helps me to hear it from someone once in a while.

This is exactly what I needed to hear right now. I've been working so hard at staying in a calorie deficit and strength training, that I forgot I'm human and can and should take a breather. Of course this doesn't mean to binge or go all chips ahoy, but it does mean to slow down and take it easy. Anxiety was kicking my ass, until this video. I have about 40-50 lbs to lose and I was acting as if that had to happen TODAY instead of a longer period of time. It was so good, I listened to this twice. As always, you hit home. ❤

I liked the analogy of muscle damage vs metabolic damage. I lost 100lb in ~10 months and had to be very careful walking calories up after the cut. Interestingly when I tried cutting again too soon, rather than losing weight my metabolism slowed down and resisted the deficit. So I'll just let the body be the boss and stay around maintenance, focusing more on muscle growth and performance.

I have had a binge issue for a while, especially earlier this year with stressful eating. This summer I tried keto for about 3 months. It was frustrating to track every single little thing. When I finally came off the diet, I started binge eating everything... Now just trying to get into a better mindset and have a better relationship with food.
