Hey everyone! My goal today is to inspire girls and YOU to learn how to do a pull-up. I chat about my story, what got me started in calisthenics as a girl, why I decided to learn how to do a pull-up, along with the methods and techniques I used. You will see lots of pull-up progressions, pull-up stunts and more. I hope I can inspire more people to learn how to do a pull-up and how to get started in calisthenics!

It's important to say that while negatives are a good starting point for some people who can't do a pull-up, they are too advanced for others. For instance my girlfriend - she had a very weak upper body when we started training together, and when she tried doing negatives she just came flying down uncontrollably. Besides not helping her in any way, it was actually dangerous since she could tear a tendon or ligament. Instead, she started with a combination of Australian pull-ups and leg-supported pull-ups. She just advanced to doing controlled negatives after 3 months of training, and hopefully to a pull-up in a couple months more!
@Summerfunfitness
@Summerfunfitness 3 года назад
yes, there are other ways to train your pull ups of course. If I was training with her I would have her do feet assisted negative pull ups as well as various upper body strengthening exercises like you mentioned. A pull day, or upper body strengthening day will always include more then one exercise in order to create a well rounded body :D I would also incorporate active hangs at the beginning (can be feet assisted if needed), limited ROM pull ups, and scapular pulls - lots you can do :D

@@Summerfunfitnessso what is the problem with band assisted pull ups?
@moctezumita
@moctezumita 11 месяцев назад
@@joelcoll4034You have the most assistance and tension from the band at the bottom, so most people don't build the strength to actually start doing pullups.
@hailhummus
@hailhummus 10 месяцев назад
@@joelcoll4034 I'm not speaking on behalf of @Summerfunfitness of course, but I know some folks don't like to use them as a training tool because there's concerns about the band creating a weird body trajectory during the pull-up, or that the person won't learn how to use body tension correctly, both of which could affect pull-up skills and bar-based skills later. But just like all training tools and methods, diff things work for diff folks!
@joeysantoro4835
@joeysantoro4835 10 месяцев назад
@@joelcoll4034they make the rep the easiest at the bottom, which is where the muscle is the most stretched. Apparently research has shown that the most stretched position of a movement is really important for strength and especially muscle growth. Bands always make that position the easiest, which is always sort of a point against them.

02:37 - negatives - do negative pull-ups; 04:17 - "grease the groove" training principle - install the pull-up bar at home and do the negative part of the full motion whenever you pass it; 05:45 - add pauses - pause halfway up, on top, and halfway back for a couple of seconds.

the gym I am at, there are a good amount of females that can do them in multiples. It really is impressive seeing anyone do 15+ pull-ups at a time. 1 of the girls hit 23 pull-ups about a month ago. It is truly the biggest indicator of full body strength. I can get 17 dead hang pull-ups so far while at 200 lbs. Good job on getting there!!
@firelordplayz

It's a good indicator of upper body strength, not full body strength. Legs have nothing to do with pull-ups.
@SweetLou15
@SweetLou15 Год назад
I'm going to call B.S. on the 23 pull-ups! I am a strength and conditioning coach and have taught and TESTED STRICT pull-ups for years. Strict PULL-UPS: Body must stay straight(feet cannot go forward, knees cannot kick up at all), Hands must be CLEARLY wider than shoulder width(2-4 in.); you have to pull your chin to bar level, and go down to 3/4 extension. I don't care how fit the girl is, I need to see it to believe it. Lots of people can Swing their body, but in my books those are NOT real pull-ups. 8-12 properly for a girl would be extremely impressive. 15 would be out of this world!

@Ivana9910
@Ivana9910 3 года назад
@Carlo Mig that's bullshit. you're literally on a video of how a girl learned to do pullups. even buzzfeed women can do pullups. go take your bad women's anatomy elsewhere. Women are 5" shorter than men on average but there is still plenty of variance within the distributions of height. As far as I'm concerned, many women are actually just fat and untrained.
@dako6082
@dako6082 3 года назад
@Carlo Mig 1 pull up is not that hard when you are kind of light weight and have some amount of upper body strength. I am a woman who is 163cm tall with a weight of 57kg and I can nearly do a pull up and 1 full chin up. And I'm not really active right now, but I've done a lot of martial arts in the past and gained a good amount of upper body strength. It's not really impossible for women. But many girls/ women don't do upper body training or just core training, so there is a high percentage who aren't able to do pull ups. Most of the time it's the lack of training.

Why did that lady think that girls can’t do pull ups? If anything calisthenics is more accessible to everyone because you are lifting your own body weight. So the person could be 4 foot 6 and weigh very little and they should still be able to do pull ups. Our bodies are made to be able to pull ourselves up.
@tbk01
@tbk01 10 месяцев назад
You would be surprised, most guy and girls can do pullups from like 3-14, but after that a combination of weight gain and society aesthetic makes its so that women want a certain shape... Thus a lot of them they stop training arm and backs in any kind of way and lose the ability to do 1 pull up, even if they weight less, and I'm not even talking about the women who weight more than me... & I'm 200 lbs of muscle.
@HallieEva
@HallieEva 6 месяцев назад
It is harder for most women to do pull ups. We just have to work harder. Most have to train for a while to get their first, while my husband can take an entire year off working out at all and still do 10+ and a muscle up.
@sandradebeer1035
@sandradebeer1035 6 месяцев назад
If your weigh less this means not automatically you can do pull ups. Woman have more musclemass/weight in their lower body and less in their upper body. This means woman have to work harder then men, to be able to do pull ups. They also have to deal with a higher b.f.p. then men. With a low b.f.p. and proper upperbody training programm it is possible for woman to do pull ups

Thanks for this video! It inspired me last year. I was 46 years old. I was in physical therapy for a knee injury, cartilage damage, so I got a pullup bar with elastics for my knee exercises, and I figured I might as well try pull-ups. Started at 0. Tried them once in the morning, and once at night without fail. After one week, I could do 1. And then I increased by an average of one pullup every week, until I reached 9, and that seemed to be my natural limit. Have not been able to do more than 9. After a while, I stopped doing them every day. But the pull-ups were the fun part of my physical therapy, so they helped me with motivation to go to the bar and keep up with the knee exercises. Thanks!

My lower half is elite (I’m a dancer/entertainer) my core is solid and improving, but zero strength up top these days.

Very good video on how to progress in this. I am 58 and as a man, when I was younger, pullups were never an issue. However, now that I am older and heavier, Pullups are not something I can do. I just started doing negative rep pullups knowing that negatives just made sense to develop your strength to get a positive rep in. It is going exactly as she describes in this video. I can only do a couple negatives right now and they are not very slow. I am glad to see this talked about in this video. Thumbs up for you. You have inspired me to keep going in this as it is very frustrating sometimes when your ego interferes when it was something you used to be able to do and now cant.

That surprises me too, although it shouldn't as the body uses a bunch of muscles in different areas to accomplish tasks. I have been working on core too, although not as hard as everything else. I have always hated core work. Even when I was younger and in shape. I had a 4 pack, but never a six pack back then. I just don't like working core and with some fat on my gut, it's even harder to get into

I want to learn to do a pullup this spring or summer and I've been using the pullup machine. I do some higher rep sets and some lower rep sets. It works pretty well and I recommend it. If I don't have that, I just prop my legs up on something and do pull ups that way. I might drop a leg for more weight. I think pullups with a resistance band are okay, but it is harder to get the full range of motion. They might be good for pullup holds. I feel stronger and I think I'm progressing, but I just started 2 weeks ago. Your video has a bunch of great ideas for what I could do past pullups (general calisthenics). Over the summer, I like to use the tree in my front yard and I do slow descents.

Negatives are sort of the secret to bodyweight training along with other clever progressions. Like a lot of things if you break it down into steps or stages it makes it possible to do things that at first seem impossible. Once you figure out, learn or discover the steps it seems obvious to you but it's not at all obvious at the start. Also nice origin story.

True, negatives are the way top go. Started with zero, and got nowhere with assisted pull-ups. Then i tried negatives. Once i could do 3x8 negatives, i was able to start with normal pullups. I can now do 3x6 pretty ones. Goal is 3x10 but its tough going.

This helped a bunch! I’ll skip the band and stay focused on negatives and give myself at least 3 months of consistency and see what magic can happen!

What I find strange is I could only do 1 pull up, then after a week and a half of not going to the gym, I returned and did 5 pulls ups in a row. Now I haven't been able to do 5 pull ups since so that's frustrating. I did notice I was very energetic on that day but couldn't replicate it.

Well done for all the hard work and dedication. Interestingly enough, you also proved one the theories of Mike Mentzer, who said: The most effective part of the movement is the peak of the contraction of the exercise (the one where you do the pauses), the second most efficient is the negative part (he recommends up to 4 second for it) and the least effective is the lifting part. Therefore "lifting weights" is actually useless.

Very cool story on the more artistic appeal of pullups and how it drove you to such a degree of mastery. Once I get better at them, I'd definitely love to have that kind of body control.

I'm a guy but this video inspired me to try to do the steps and other stuff during pullups or when hanging from a bar. It looks really cool.

I'll just be happy when I get my first pull up (since highschool at 125 pounds). I'm 5'10 and weigh 170 now I've lifted and worked out my whole life and still have ever only done 1.

My favorite method of training is applying skill to real life situations like for pull ups, I go to playground and climb latter without feet in safe areas of course pulling a little at a time leading to final result with practice.

Just found your videos on calisthenics and pull ups. Thank you for the advice and the included timeline it took you. I had a tendency to give up too easily because of my body weight thinking that it’s a no go, even though I can do dips. I don’t mind doing curls and incline rows but I wanted to get to the pull up due to its compound movement for the biceps and upper back. Plus you can do it anywhere you can find something to pull up on.

We have so many self imposed limitations on our physical capabilities. Pity that people around us often impose some more. I think grease the groove is a great suggestion for pull ups, because there is a big body awareness component.
