A clearance investigator may consider you a liability if you have debt in collections. However, there's more that factors in to this. For instance, I currently have $90 in collections and refuse to pay it out of principle (due to something personal). This amount is negligible when compared to my current salary, savings, and debt to income ratio. Therefore, my clearance is not at risk. If you don't already have a clearance however, it's definitely best to get all your debt taken care of. When looking through your finances, the investigator is wondering how likely are you to sell secrets/classified documents due to financial hardship.

You can join if you have student loans even if you are not pay it’s ok.

So what about if I’m financing a car? The debt I only have is with the car and obviously it’s on a payment plan. All credit cards get paid in full by there respective payment due date.

As long as you’re on a payment plan, you’ll be fine. Not sure how the program is doing your relief efforts but they often inform you to stop paying for a period of time to then have negotiation power to settle your debt a fraction of the cost. It could very well possibly prevent you from joining and if you’re attempting to go for a clearance level position… those will be closed to you. Good luck and best wishes! Hey I got roughly 3500 dollars in unsecured credit card debt from me being dumb and 18 will the army let me join if I just set up payment plans?

Currently going to meps in two days but have 4,200$ in debt collections for an eviction that was under my name where I didn’t even know was added until a month prior… my recruiter said that as long as I act oblivious about it at meps that I should get waived since I already have my mos temporarily locked and should be cleared for everything else. Is there a good chance of them allowing me to do payment plans when enlisting, or is that something that would hold me back indefinitely from enlisting? Thank you

Also to note I chose MOS 68W which doesn’t require a security clearance, and if I pass meps then I’d be shipped out the next week, so I feel I should get the benefit of them allowing me to reach an agreement, but just a bit worried:/

Did they let you go thru MEPS? I have the same issue atm I'm trying to enlist and this debt from a eviction just popped up literally like 3 days ago I already have to have a morale waiver and a pysch eval so this is just adding on to my list of things to get in

After signing the contract and getting a bootcamp date I pulled my credit report and saw that I had $312 in collections from a bill I had completely forgot about. I saw on the credit report it was pulled yesterday by araxid which is apparently a contractor for the Justice Department/ Department of Defense. So I assume the background investigators just pulled it. Is this going to disqualify me? I had completely forgotten about it

So at this moment I’m debt free however for 2022 I filed exempt all year because I was bieng garnished 25% out of my wages , I’m nervous to file I want to join but once I file I feel I’m going to owe so much I did make 65k am I screwed boss

Always pay your taxes the normal way. Sounds like after you file you can contact the IRS for payment plan but as a result of you doing what you did, you’ll be deducting double the taxes to pay off back taxes. I’m still learning so much about the military so please be patient with me. My son has some college debt and I thought that when you join the military, school loans are paid. Is that not the case?

Student Loan Repayment Program if qualified at time of contracting should have been signed for when he contracted. If he didn’t, he can get it later during the re-enlistment process. Good question!

Two questions what happens if one is going through bankruptcy? Also if I enlist for the guard and my mos is on the other side of the state, do I have to pay my travel expense or does the guard cover that?

May disqualify you from service depending on your unique details but it will def prevent you from obtaining opportunities requiring a secret clearance or higher. If assigned to a unit beyond a reasonable travel distance is state specific and how they handle expenses is state specific as well. A hotel or military place to sleep is typically provided free if you’re 100 miles or more away. Mileage is dependent on state policy. It not that the Army or the military won’t take “poor” people like you suggest… the military isn’t willing to accept financially irresponsible people that could be easily persuaded with money to help them out in exchange for classified intel. IFKYK
