Can I Stop on a Yellow Line

Can I stop on a yellow line? Can I park on a yellow line? The question seems simple but in fact, is so complicated that councils throughout the country make huge amounts of money because of its confusion.
The answer is Yes and no. Yes, you can park on certain days but you can't park on other days.
In this video, I'm going to explain the rules in simple terms. In the UK we have single and double yellow lines.
Single yellow lines mean no parking on the times at the times stated on the plate. This could be anything between 7am and 7pm. An example of this would be something like 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday but always check the sign as they may differ. You may have to walk up to 50 meters to find one of these time plates.
A double yellow line is the same as a single yellow line but with extended hours. So if they wanted no parking up to 8pm, the council would have to paint a double yellow line as single is only valid up to 7pm. Most double yellow lines are 24/7
However, you can stop on signal or double yellow lines to pick up and drop off passengers or for loading and unloading. T this is where many people get their parking tickets. They say they went only for 2 minutes to load or unload something. But they fail to notice the dashed line or lines on the curb.
A single dashed line indicated no loading or unload between certain times. Eg. In this example, there is no parking from 8am to 6.60pm. Before 11am you can stop to load and unload. You can also stop to load and unload after 3pm. The traffic warden will usually allow you 10 minutes before issuing a ticket. However, between the hours of 11am and 3pm, even if you stop for a minute and pop into the local shop, you can get a ticket. The traffic warden may not allow you any time and issue a ticket within seconds.
A double dash would mean no loading at any time.
Well, that should mean no more parking tickets for you. Please do share this with others so they are not paying the council money which they do not need to do so.

2:43 if the single yellow line is outside of the operational hours then you’re allowed to park there and are therefore allowed to pop down to the shop, if the single yellow line is within the operational hours then you’re not allowed to park there to pop to the shop as technically you’re parked on a single yellow line during the hours of operation which is not allowed, double yellow lines the restriction is 24/7 and so again you can’t park on double yellow lines to pop to the shop as technically you’re parking on double yellow lines which isn’t allowed, but you’re absolutely allowed to briefly stop on a single or double yellow line to pick up and set down passengers and to load and unload goods as long as it’s very brief and you’re as quick as possible and don’t take any rest breaks.

Hello Wayne 👋 Nicely put 👌 but one point: A double yellow is exactly the same as a Single yellow BUT with added hours. This can be 7am to 10pm or it can be 24 hours
@WayneTulip-zm9gw
@WayneTulip-zm9gw Месяц назад
True mate as with a single yellow line it’s only from 7am - 7pm so if they want a restriction before 7am and after 7pm then they’d have to paint double yellow lines.

Most people think that double yellow lines mean no parking 24/7 which is sort of correct but at the same time it’s not quite correct, double yellow lines without a time plate means no parking at any time 24/7, double yellow lines with a time plate means that there is a parking restriction before 7am or after 7pm, check the time plate for more details.

3:10 loading and unloading refers to the continuous movement of goods to and from your vehicle, it has nothing to do with passengers so if there are single loading ticks or double yellow ticks on the kerb you’re allowed to pick up and drop off passengers as you’re not loading and unloading.

Hello, very interesting video! I just got a PCN as I parked my car in front of my driveway. The funny thing is that there is a dropped kerb and also double yellow lines! Could you give us a clue of why they’ve put double yellow lines by the dropped kerb in front of our driveway and am I allowed to stop there. Also, I left space, at least a meter for pedestrians to walk.. thank you!
@dtc_uk

Hello, Thanks for commenting. Unfortunately, you CANNOT park on a dropped kerb - even if you live there. I have no idea why they decided to put a double yellow - possibly to pay for COVID.

3:08 statement is not fully right I guess. we are allowed to drop off/pickup passengers. As per highway codes - "Yellow marks on the kerb or at the edge of the carriageway indicate that loading or unloading is prohibited at the times shown on the nearby black and white plates. You may stop while passengers board or alight" . Please correct me if I am wrong here.

I stopped on double yellow line for 1 min and the CEO came and took only 1 photo of the car and then I drove off. After that I received the PCN at home, I challenged it but the council rejected. Now I’m thinking to go to court but not sure. Should I pay that pcn just only with 1 phone evidence they have got? Also do they record with body dash or they tune it on only if they have been threatened? Thank you.

Hi mate, I was just wondering, if I want to stop on yellow lines to load or to unload is there a time limit? Some say 20 minutes, some say 40 minutes and some say there’s no time limit as long as it’s continuous with no breaks so I’m not sure which one it is. 🙃
@dtc_uk
@dtc_uk 4 месяца назад
Hi Wayne. Its only for the purposes of loading and unloading. So if you are loading something onto your car, it should not take more than a few minutes. However, if you ate loading up a van, it may take 20 minutes. A lorry may take 30 minutes. It's up to the traffic warden. Camera's are worst as they can see what time you finished the load/unload. Best bet. Park in the car park.
@WayneTulip-zm9gw
@WayneTulip-zm9gw 4 месяца назад
Hi mate, thank you for the reply, I appreciate it, yes, it’s much better and much easier to load and unload goods and pick up and drop off passengers in a car park or on your driveway, that way you can take as long as you like and you don’t have to worry about any traffic wardens. 🙃

If I wanted to upgrade my automatic licence to manual, will I be classed as a "new driver" all over again for another 2 years after passing the car driving test in a manual? It has been just over 2 years since I passed my car driving test in an automatic and I have been a well behaved driver during that 2 year period. I have NO penalty points. NO fines etc. I have a full clean driving licence. Please get back to me. Thanks.
@HH011
@HH011 2 года назад
Firstly, Google exists. Secondly, you will be treated as a new driver, as driving manually is totally different to automatic and without proper practice can be dangerous.
@T-800SERIES
@T-800SERIES 2 года назад
@@HH011 I know Google exists, captain obvious. Yet it rarely provides any answers to my question. The only explanation I've come across from various sources went something like this: "If you pass your motorcycle test first and then pass your car driving test 2 years later, you will NOT be classed as a new driver because you've had your licence for two years since getting a motorcycle licence" and vice versa. Anyways, I just wanted to be sure. Many other driving instructors have told me I will NOT be classed as a new driver upgrading from auto to manual. Another one said "No, your licence date on the back of the card will remain the same when you passed the automatic test. Basically, the date when you handed over your green provisional licence to get your first ever pink coloured licence. The only info on the back of the card that will be removed will be the code 78 number"

Sorry fella, but I have to disagree that you can stop on yellow lines to "pop down to the shop." That's pushing the definition of loading and unloading a bit too far. A packet of fags, for example is hardly a "load." Yes, if you stopped on yellows outside an electrical store to collect your new cooker or other large item, that would apply. As for picking up and setting down passengers, annoyingly, a local taxi driver got done for picking up a disabled passenger on double yellows and ended up in court. Unbelievablly, the court upheld the penalty notice! That simply makes a mockery of the rules, so drivers still need to exercise caution. Great channel, thanks.
