Especially children/teenagers. They need someone to teach them properly not just let them fuck up their bodies alone or with their group of equally dumb friends.
Watching people do kettle bell swings, and dead lifts/squats is always hilarious. “I can lift as much as that guy!” * Oh shit that girls looking at me I can’t bail now...snap*

Hmm, well I didn't lift weights before I was grown, so can't blame lifting weights on being 4'9" tall! Seriously, though, Dr. Youn. What can cause a person to be so short?? I wasn't premature and I don't think I was malnourished as an infant (I certainly wasn't as a child). My short stature is one of the things about my body that I am coming to accept about myself and given that I'm no longer willing to wear elevator shoes (to get to be 5'1"), I'm just going to be terminally short. Take it or leave it.
I think it's genetics.....I don't know what's the height of your parents but let's assume they're of average height then also the genes of your ancestors sometimes can play a role in this.....there are rare cases who got problem with pituitary gland but then there would be weight issues also so if that's the case, go to a doctor......and I am happy for you that you're finally comfortable in your body, have a good one❤️❤️
I know sometimes *when* you start puberty can come into play. The earlier you start, the shorter you’re likely to be (apparently). But it mostly just comes down to genetics and luck of the draw.
However when you’re very young and do intense exercise e.g. gymnastics you can grow slower, cause your body simply put so much energy into the sport. there are examples of twins where one did intense gymnastics and was mich smaller than her twin, I think you catch up on growth though when you stop.
oh I talked to a man with grown identical twins, but one was noticeably taller than the other. He thought this might be due to the short one severely limiting his food so as to be in the lighter weight category. High school wrestling can mess a person up...
Super high impact training like gymnastics can certainly "stunt" your growth as you said cuz of the strain on your tissues. I. pT and the risks associated with training children and teens is something we most definitely have to learn at some point.
I'm not familiar with the literature but I think that since being taller alters your center of mass thereby making gymnastics harder, taller people are also more likely to quit or stick to more recreational gymnastics. As a result, I think most of the gymnasts who remain tend to be shorter in general, and the growth thing might compound that.
This exactly. I've been going to the gym regularly for a while, lifting and all that, and weirdly enough I just hit a huge growth spurt. I wish my friend would believe me though
@@glitzy5843 no Im rn 12 and 6 months and my dad got me into one of his friend(Sidrat)'s gym in december i spent december learning the form and techniques and now i train on my own to muscular failure. And the last time i measured my height was in august on my birth day and at that time i was 5'4. Now im 5'6 so my growth didnt get stunted.
Our parents always told us caffeine would do it. So we never drank coffee like the "adults". Perhaps they didn't want us running around like madmen with machete's due to caffiene.
My mom told me caffeine makes children sleepy, and because my brain is wired to think that way, I don’t get any energy from even 2 Vente black coffees 💀✌️
Just wanted to say gymnastics stunted my growth. I was projected to be 5’10. My family is full of tall relatives over 6’3. I’m only 5’4. Doctors even said my growth was stunted from gymnastics. 🤸♀️. I started it at 9
Predicting growth is never accurate. I was supposed to be 5’5, yet I’m 6’2 and still growing. There’s a huge variation in growth and it’s not entirely determined by genetics. Gymnastics itself won’t stunt growth, but weight cutting during puberty definitely can.if you were regularly in a calorie deficit this could be the reason for some of your height. If a growth plate is injured it’s often quite obvious, because one leg will be significantly longer than the other.
The thing is it's probably not gymnastics in itself, probably lack of appropriate calorie consumption. Because gymnastics is a very physically draining activity, your food intake should be MUCH higher
Children and teens are more susceptible to this type of injury though because tissues aren't fully developed yet so, still need to exercise (tee hee) with caution/ and a trained professional who knows how to specifically train children/teens if you're talking about competitive / elite level athleticism
My older sister was big into gymnastics competition from childhood throughout high school (age 18) and she's only 5'4 while I'm 5'7. She's always thought it was the gymnastics that made her short. Maybe it was.
My cousin did gymnastics but when she quit she grew like 3 inches in a month at 16 years old. It could've been because she tried to stay skinny for gymnastics but idk
might be but me and my sister both did gymnastics for the exact same amount of time maybe 3-4 years, she is 3 years younger than me but she is 5'2 and I am just 4'10 even tho i am older than her.
It’s a lot easier to move the weight of a shorter person so of course more shorter people are going to excel in gymnastics rather than taller, heavier people.
I should be good because I only hit upper body and I only pr on squat once for football and we have a trainer just like you. I’m hoping for 6’ 5. My dad was 5’ 5 when he was 18 and grew to 6’ 4 by 21 and I’m 5’ 9 at 14 so I’m hoping for a late growth spurt. My grandpa is 6’ 6 and my grandma is 5’ 9. My cousin is 6’ 8 and he’s 35. My great grandpa was 6’ 8 also.
I think I’ve heard people thought that because child coal miners tended to be short. I could be completely wrong but I think I heard that. Edit: yeah I was right it was a study in the 19th century that thought British coal mining children were shorter because of the heavy coal loads they would carry but it was really because they were mostly poor and malnourished.
Really!!?!....My mom never lets me lift weights...Because she said "It stunts your growth"... And that also that "Girls don't lift weight"...But I was just trying to lose weight..
I’m a mom and I would support her lol First lose weight by watching ur diet along with aerobics n achieve ur goal then do light weight to build muscles. That will bring long lasting results !!
Cardio is better than lifting weights if you want to lose weight. Much easier and effective. If you want you can lift weight but it will be harder to get muscles because of the high estrogen(female hormones) and low testosterone (male hormones)
LOL 😂 I remember trying to argue that this not only seemed illogical, but I couldn't find any peer reviewed (scientific studies) that support this crazy idea. This was nearly 40 years ago. Was this actually a wide-held belief in the 80s scientific community? I heard it repeated time and again by coaches, doctors, teachers, etc.
As a teenager who is very short and lifts weights, I can confirm my growth plates never existed and lifting weights is, if anything, my body's (and mind's) coping mechanism
So you can if you're doing bad practices.. eeerr yes like I was!!!!! And teens being teens.. they're just going to go exercise and overdo it thinking they're superheroes.. I mean, I did myself!!
Im 11, in a couple of days im 12, im currently 5'4, if i start now will it make me not grow as much because I want to be as tall as possible when im older. I play basketball
My mom's left arm is shorter than her right arm by a couple of inches because when she was a kid her arm got run over when she slipped while playing hockey.
For y'all young-ins (21 & under), please avoid injuries as much as you can! Master proper form, do warmups, stretches, & cool downs, and eat what's right for you. If you start doing the right habits early, it'll become more natural when you get older & "adulting" becomes a struggle. This sounds generic, but it's a tale as old as time. Irrefutable, unchanging, and is agreed by any & every person.
Hi Dr. Youn just saw a video of a 100 year old lady award winning heavylifter and she's looking happy and very healthy. So much so I'm considering trying it myself. Like Pilates correct technique is key.
What about weight lifting as you age? Will this hurt your older, aging bones, potentially cause fractures, lead to shrinking? I'm only 5' tall and I'd like to keep to mere 60" I am now!
Strength training is a great way to minimize bone density loss as we age. Strength training not only encourages muscle growth but strengthening of your tendons and ligaments as density of your bones(however this is a much slower process than muscle building) you don't have train super hard like a body builder just consistently do something challenging but maintainable for YOU and your needs.
@@loryndabenson2118 Thanks, that's great information to know, especially since I have an almost 70 years young wife who prefers weight lifting to other exercise plans. But I worried because she has arthritis and I thought she was doing other exercise but she's only doing muscle strengthening.
@@chevingladden5146 as long as she is training where is comfortable to her and doing movement appropriate for her level of mobility, her age and arthritis shouldn't pose too much of an issue, however she may have to modify some exercise depending on how she is feeling. I'd also recommend some light to moderate(subjective to her) cardio training two to 3 times a week as well as weights. It would be best to discuss with both her doctor/and a local personal trainer for any specific questions pertaining to her arthritis. Other than that staying moderately active should help you both stay healthy and mobile. For general joint pain regular stretching/massage and balanced diet (very low to zero added sugars, whole foods, organic if you can grow/or afford it) should help take care of excessive inflammation. Plus it's good for your mental health as well to stay active doing something you enjoy. If her pick is weights, good for her. If you like something else like bike riding for example that's excellent if it makes you happy and keeps you healthy too, just remember to add in a little resistance training which could be body weight or resistance bands as well. For your age group the goal isn't necessarily getting super strong, just maintaining your health overall and mobility but if you're able to make any gains that's excellent too. ☺️💜
A cap is a flat headgear, usually with a visor. Caps have crowns that fit very close to the head. They made their first appearance as early as 3200 BC. The origin of the word "cap" comes from the Old French word "chapeau" which means "head covering".
it doesent effect your growth in anyway unless you start to do it from a very young age. The reason for this is cuz your body has not stopped growing yet therefore lifting from a young age makes the upper part of the body (somewhere where the shoulders are) heavier and makes it harder for your body to grow. In my opinion the perfect age to lift is at age 21
Can you bend your bones from lifting heavy weights? I'm 14 and a half and want to start going to the gym but I'm not sure if I could damage my bones or anything if I lift heavy weights.
Dr., when I hear this theory, I think of it from a hormonal perspective. Lifting heavy and increasing muscle mass increases blood testosterone levels, so in theory you could stunt your growth by lifting so much that you produce enough testosterone to close your growth plates. If anyone sees this and knows the actual physiological answer to this theory I’d love to know it.
My father keep telling me not to lift weights because it will stunt my growth but thankfully I didn't listen to him. I started weightlifting at 14 years old, when I was 176 cm/5'9. Now I'm 15 years old and standing at 180 cm/5'11.
But is it true that the fusion of the growth plates into a bone (which is a natural process that happens at the end of puberty) is caused by the surplus amount of sex hormones produced by our body, and when we work out our body produces a huge amount of testosterone hormone which will eventually fuse your growth plates into bone early on in teenagers?
Guys just boost your hgh natural ways are to exercise intensely popular methods would be hiit or weight training so like bench or squats or deadlifts also if you diet can help boost it and adequate sleep 👍
Oh and ofc not natural way is to inject hgh into the body wouldn’t recommend it cause it can deform parts of your body causing you to have like bigger hands and feet weird face and can’t be reversed
Strength training does not stunt growth…. however, maximal lifting (highest weight amount you can lift one to three times) may put you at more risk for injury to the growing areas of a child's body. Therefore, max lifting should be discouraged until after puberty.
@@reddotsxul8166 The average height is 5'5. Besides that point, the majority of all gymnastics are below 5 feet or just at 5 feet with the tallest at 5'3. There has to be some kind of link with stunting their growth.
@@SSM654 you just said female gymnasts are at least 5’3 now you changed it to at most 5’3, but whatever. Besides. Average height for women based on country can range from anywhere from 5’0 to 5’6, and shorter people excel in gymnastics since it’s less weight to move, and no it’s not because of them gradually getting shorter due to the fact they’re gymnasts, it’s them using their natural size to the best of its ability also, to further prove this, sprinters tend to be taller than usual yet they put a lot of strong, rapid force on their legs, shouldn’t they be getting shorter with the amount they of pressure they put on their legs.
THANK U DUUDE THERES SOME KIDS WHO SAID “this really helped me I recommend not to do squats it’s better for you” LIKE WHAT AND SOME FAKE ASS “BODYBUILDERS” say this will stunt your growth they legit get 4-6 packs and call themselves “BodyBuilder” absolutely ridiculous
If I damage my plates like that will I feel it? I used to do very horrendous form with curls to get one more rep in but I never experienced any significant pain
