When I was a kid racing jrs in scrambles in 1976 in South Australia there was a bloke in A grade who rode a 500cc CCM . this thing had a 12'' long x 1 1/2 '' diam exhaust, no muffler but man you could hear that thing from 2 miles away. He was a big dude and he looked like he was riding a mini bike. By hell that thing had some torque. I think if you do some suspension work and get the right gearing you would wipe the floor with your bike. People did some big things on older bikes don't under estimate them. People have to learn you don't always need the latest and greatest. You did well representing the older stuff. Well done.

DUDE, you made my day! An SP/DR500 soulmate. I used to have this one from 1983 - 1987 and "raced" it onroad, in fact I was slaying racebikes on winding roads and that was the biggest fun ever! Here in Germany, this bike was sold as "DR500S", with shitty brakes, almost no electricity working (mighty 6V...), an even more shitty muffler (with a can-style pot just behind the rear wheel) but with a fantastic engine. It actually was the first 4-valve head from Suzuki´s mono-cylinder engines. The ones before (SP370/DR400) where lame 2-valve engines. The SP/DR500 killed it engine-wise and it´s so good to see you slaying and slashing the other riders on that track. Excellent footage, cheers!

Oh man, this is so cool! I'm glad you got it done and the ole girl made it! This really makes me want to get back into the thumper game! I have a bunch of TT500 stuff, but I've really been eying an XR600!

There are so many aspects of this, your talents, determination and attitude that are so impressive.

I was a Yamaha and Kawasaki tech and test rider at dealerships and race shops for most of my career. Let me tell you this is the kinda real world testing and results that I'd like to see. No scripted bits and skits. No unrealistic claims of power and costs. No click bait bs to get views. No statements about "how to compete for cheap and easy". Just a proposed question and a real world test. Ferkin excellent man. Knocked it out of the park. That engine would probably do pretty rad at a flat track too.

Old bikes are great fun to ride. Modern bikes are way more capable than most people require and most people will exhaust themselves trying to get the absolute maximum out of them. Old bikes can be ridden at their limits pretty easily so you can relax and enjoy the ride a bit more.

My sp500 has won 2 vintage championships, and completed 3 races to win an over 30 expert age class championship cause my main bike broke down. The sp is an amazing bike. I resprung some rm125 front suspension to get a better race style rake out of the front forks. Put 16.5" rear shocks off a kdx400 on the back. She almost corners as good as my 2018 GasGas 300. Almost.

I would be putting all of your physical comfort on the bike though, your fitness and prep for the race is sure to add something to the feeling of good after that race. Hey Matt, I used to have the same Honda 500, with the same shifter problem. I pulled the cover and there is a clip that had worked it's way out of a groove, it's an easy repair, and worth the little bit of time to fix it correctly.

You should do a budget build sires and mount 77-79 cr250 forks and shocks to solve the ground clearance and suspension issue

my son races an xr200 in the nbdra pro class....90 percent rider 10 percent bike!

Make sure to bring a full can of KTM tears to avoid those issues at WOT next time ;)
