Was Racing The XR600R TOO INTENSE?!

Raced the Glen Helen 6 Hour Endurance Race on a 1987 XR600R in the ironman class. It chewed me up and spit me out! Unfortunately, my elbow injury from the 24 hour ironman race wasn't as healed as I thought, and it caught up with me 4 hours into this race. If I try to keep racing, I'm sure I'm going to end up with a badly crippled arm, so, for now, I'm taking time off to get EVERYTHING 100%!

Even if you uploaded a "how to recover from a jacked up elbow" video I would so watch it. Even a "what I plan to do with the 600r" video where you jist sit down and talk about mods. That would be so dope. I'm glad you're putting yourself first too, a lot of other people would just "tough it out" and make everything worse. Love your stuff Gabe.

Congrats for just finishing. People don't understand the stress riding that long puts on your body and your brain. I'm 55 yrs old and these races put me in shock for several days. BTW, I'm riding the Husky you pass on the uphill at the start of your race video.

People definitely don't realize it. When I was big into cross country mountain biking, we went to a discussion by the people that had been studying the effects on the brain of hours and hours of racing. They found it actually took days for the brain to fully reset back to normal operation. Crazy how much brain function must be taking place to keep everything from the bike (or moto) to the body working as one process.

My neighbor had that same bike when I was a kid. Dude could ride. The bike was a beast. Game me a ride on the back once. He could ride it in 3 feet of water with a giant wave/water pocket going over our heads. He could ride near vertical shale rock cliffs, wheelie around turns, everything. He rode since he was 4 years old. Still one of the most impressive real-life riders and bikes I've seen to this day. RIP Art Cross.

Hey, Gabe!!! I ain't "God's Answer to Dirt Bike Racers", but raced for nearly 40 years until knee replacement(s) sorta forced me into Trials competitions and trail riding/racing with friends. So take my advice with a grain of salt. Yeah, "Size" can matter sometimes, but sometimes a smaller bike, that doesn't try to rip your arms off with every twist of the throttle, might be a bit easier to take for 6, 10, 12, or 24 hrs. solo. One of the worst things I ever did for my Vet class moto racing was to sell my trusty '99 Yamaha YZ250 to buy a buddy's '06 YZ450F. Finish positions went down, crashes and maintenance costs went up. And it didn't help my Rheumatoid Arthritis either (TRULY appreciate your vid on that!!) at all; I felt more sore after a weekend of Vet racing the 450F than I ever had before with the lighter, "dumbed-down-with-a-flywheel-weight" 2-stroke. The "soreness for 4+ days after a weekend race" really SUCKED. But getting into Trials, with a 160 lb. bike, kept me ridin. Maybe this could help you? I wanna see back in the saddle, and kickin' ass, Buddy!!! Wishin' you the best, and wantin' to help!

I started riding XRs in East Africa and ended up sliding into doucheville somehow spending tons of money on new fancy stuff that I felt and feel disconnected from. My best motorcycle memories are linked to old school bikes and riding on a budget. I just moved back to the region (Uganda) with a brand new expensive as fuck 2021 FE501 and a lot of fancy bits for it. While I was waiting for it to arrive, I came across a bone stock 1997 Honda XR250R Baja. I am having more fun riding this thing than any new bike I have ridden in recent memory. Keeping it and selling the Husky. Thanks Gabe, for the inspiration to go back to my roots and snap out of the shinyshinynewfarkleblowmoneylikeamoron trance. You rock.

Awesome video and a great motorcycle! I had a 1986 Honda XR600R (Clementine) that I bought in 1996. It was bored out, had an aftermarket higher compression piston (10:1 I think), was rejetted and had a Supertrap exhaust... It was fast! I live in Tucson Arizona, that motorcycle was perfectly suited for the desert, that's for sure! We used to go to the outskirts of Tucson, there was a long winding sandy wash road that went back into the mountains on governmental land where everybody went riding, we would race for probably about 1/2 mile through several turns and several long straightaways... I smoked all of my friends on Clementine! Great memories!

Recommendation - get a young protege - a kid who hasn't been beaten to death yet. Off load at least half of the endurance races to the kid. This will give you extended times to heal. Your upcoming machinery will then get fully tested. And a note on repetitive use injuries - esp. tennis elbow - it may require surgery - because - in repetitive use injury the tendons healing process gets totally confused - your tendon collagen could be lined up in every direction - and it can get to the point where it just ain't gonna find it's way back. In best scenario the body builds sufficient new collagen around this area - and your body adapts to using the new material and ignoring the old. But not always. Surgery will remove the area of confused collagen. Sometimes this is the only way out on tennis elbow.
