What is UP RU-vid? Welcome to Fred's Full Throttle!
Today's video is going to be a slightly different, but I'd argue much more important video for any of you that are petrol heads. I'm going to be focusing primarily on why reports of combustion engines disappearing to be replaced by EV's is GREATLY exaggerated by talking through a two really important initiatives that will keep those pistons thumping, and then of course give an update on the 24 Hours of Lemons race car build!
This should be a pretty thought provoking video, so I hope you enjoy it. Let's dive in!

Fred Totally agree with you on EV’s One thing that most are not talking about, is the strip mining that occurs to remove the rare earth minerals, and it will not be long before consumers become aware of this, and will not want any part of it Great podcast today, you are doing a awesome job, keep it coming

Much appreciated Bill! Yes, I agree. I didn't dive into it, but the ecological damage that the mining of some of these rare/exotic metals causes is horrible. Just because it doesn't happen in our part of the world doesn't mean it can be ignored. I've read of some promising research with salt based batteries and other non-toxic, and much more common materials. Before any adoption can really grow, it needs to be sustainable, and not further destroy the planet. I'm with you man! Thanks for the compliments and kinds words, I'm really enjoying not having the be as tied to one data stream (C8 Z06) as I was in the past. I know it's not as popular overall, but I think over time, my "view into the world of cars" will grow, and ultimately this will be more fulfilling and fun for me than such a narrow focus. Have a nice weekend! -Fred

Interesting view of EV's and other options. Well articulated perspective, including the complexity of transitioning highly integrated/refined processes. Also enjoyed the updates on the Lemons project! Thanks!

My pleasure Bill! I wasn't sure how well it'd be received, because some people are so anti-EV. But I think my general audience tends to be pragmatic and thoughtful, so I'm glad that it was interesting and informative. And certainly I enjoy driving, but there are times, like stuck in traffic jams, or driving long distances of highway miles where I wouldn't mind handing over some of the control to an automated system. Just this past week I drove up to Maine to go snowboarding, and it was snowing pretty good. The radar cruise control sensor on my Tacoma got covered up by the slush, and cruise control was no longer available unless I got out and cleaned it. So I had roughly 90 min on the highway that I had to operate the throttle. Certainly not a hardship, but it made me appreciate how much we rely on little things like that, and only really notice when we don't have them. lol Have a great weekend Bill! -Fred

@Fred's Full Throttle I wouldn't mind having an EV as a daily driver as long as there's still opportunities, as you noted, to have a fun car. I will always like tinker a bit and get a little grease on my hands.

That's why I'm here. E-fuel...very interesting and a game changer. Fred need the low down on Z06 production. Word on the street is 1200 cars and production ending. I'm in New Zealand. Incredible country and $10 a gal gas. No C8's, 1 escalade and a ton of Hilux diesels. Also very cool small diesel campers.

Thanks Vettesweetnos! I've had more than a handful of people chime in or email me saying similar things! I think that it will take a while before these options gain critical mass, but the potential is there, and I believe people will more or less always want the ability to drive something from prior years, even if our dailies become EV's at some point. I've been having a lot of fun branching out and making different videos like this. Views are much less, but I'm enjoying it more. I think over time, I'll gain more audience as maybe the "I only want to see C8" subs drop off, but people who want to learn more about the car world start growing. Thanks for the support, always nice to hear from you! -Fred

@@FredsFullThrottle well I'm here to stay. My Z06 has been 3000 status since 1/31 so it's getting close, I'm thinking about selling my charger redeye before values tank and this economy worsens and maybe picking up a camaro ZL1 for my wife, she wants one of those or an Aston Martin Dbs but I won't pay for that lol. Then I'm gonna shop for a C6 grand sport to heavily modify like I used to have. I enjoy all the varied content.

Fred, Very informative! I was not aware of E-fuel technology, so I found that interesting. Since I am in my 70's I have no fear of my beloved gasoline guzzling car being replaced. A friend has a Tesla Plaid. When he gave me a ride, although you could feel the acceleration, there was no thrill. I remember my C5R-427 engine roaring as I accelerated and that sensation was the complete package. Since I live in the Southeast, AKA Nascar country. I envision all these EV cars going around Atlanta Motor Speedway humming. And all the seats for the fans are empty! Now for my pet peeve. All of this is driven by global warming, but IMHO there is a disconnect. The US & EU are pushing hard, spending hundreds of billions, but as we restrict CO2, there are other areas of the globe, especially China and the rest of Asia, building coal fired plants faster than we can close ours. Over the last 20 years, as EU & US decreased CO2, global CO2 has increased by 50% (10 billion tonnes.) China, India, and the rest of Asia are adding more than 200 coal fired plants. I can understand why, because China has large deposits of coal and it is a cheap source of energy. I feel that we are chasing our tails. The reduction EU and US accomplished is meaningless. Even looking at EV cars, per capita, EU is first, US second, China 3rd. For a plan to reduce an alleged global ELE, you need global buy-in. Stepping down from my soap box... Sully

Despite our best efforts, we have little control over our neighbors and ultimately we share the air, oceans and the pollution.
@FredsFullThrottle
@FredsFullThrottle Год назад
Hi Sully! Yeah the E-Fuel option is going to be really interesting going forward. I see it as a way to keep fun/enthusiast cars running well into the future, and even if it costs a premium over time, I'd imagine enthusiasts will pay it so they can drive their favorite cars. I hear you on the global issues of pollution. Though we can't control our neighbors and other citizens of the world, I think it's still better to do what we can, rather than nothing. While global pressure seems (so far) to have limited effect on countries like China, Russia, India, over time, I suspect as our climate situation gets more dire, and certain places become harder to live in, that pressure from their populations can slowly push them to change. Already I've read about places in China where they've decided to end practices of burning trash and e-waste (computer/electronics components), because of the environmental fallout that poisons the water and the air. Despite it seeming like we have minimal impact, it seems better to try to help things along and live by example rather than to just toss up our hands and give up. Thanks for the insightful comment! Have a nice weekend! -Fred

I'm so pleased you enjoyed it, and glad it resonated. I've found the Venn Diagram of "car enthusiasts" and "people who don't believe we need to look out for our planet at all" to have a large amount of overlap unfortunately. :/ It's sad to me that many people can't see middle ground, or make arguments "well we shouldn't try to save the planet because doesn't". At a minimum there will need to be compromise, whether people like it or not, and if people get involved, support various technologies, we can have a voice in still having some options available to us that we enjoy/appreciate. I don't understand the "everything or nothing" approach. My video for tomorrow just finished uploading (it's a long one!), and I think it will resonate with you, and lots of others, though totally different subject, and a bit different direction. One clue, it includes some pretty cathartic rants I've been wanting to say for a while! :) Have a great day Bill! -Fred

I do look forward to the C8 HTC Sunday Cruise for Ice Cream. And, any other days I have left at age 68 to put my right foot on the pedal and enjoy stepping out in the C8. The changes we face in the Automotive Industry may not all be to our liking, but having a vehicle that you can drive off a showroom floor and go 0-60 in under 3 seconds and maybe 2 seconds is appealing to me no matter if it is powered by cow flatulence. The jury is still out on if I want to purchase and ERAY and the position on the MM ZO6 list keeps going down every so slightly, now at 1530 (dropped 143 spots so far). I’d like to see the C9s as I imagine we are going to be in for who knows what? Not to say there may be other offerings from other manufacturers as I’m not brand specific. My 2009 Mustang GT is at the dealership today getting new shoes (Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s). Great to see you Friday Fred! I got my Ticket on 2/28 for Carlisle and hope to go there on Friday 8/25. Would be great to see you there! Great Vlog as always! Some of the Engineer’s perspective is occasionally above my Pay Grade lol! Fantastic to hear about your car club! I doubt I could make the meetings and cruises, but I’d like to hear more.

Thanks for the note Doug! I created the car club (called Gearheads) through my current work, as a way for me to meet other car/bike enthusiasts. Each year I put together a handful of group drives, cars and coffee events, and other things like that to get people together. At this point many of the members have been part of the club for over 7 years, so each time we meet up it's great to see so many old friends! Congrats on the Carlisle tickets, I can't commit yet if I'll be there, but I'll keep everyone posted! Have a nice day man! -Fred

My takeaway from this is here in the Southwest E-fuel prices will be over $10 a gallon since water is at a premium. I would love to have this be a reality because I'm not too jazzed about EVs. I like how quick some of them are but the reduction of power as the battery is depleted really bothers me. When my Stinger is at a 1/4 tank, I have the same power that I have at a full tank of fuel. No so true with EVs! What about people that live in a Condo or Apartments? They often do not have the ability to plug in. My daughter lived in a townhome community, and they had two charging points for over 100 residents. I'm sure some of them had a charge point in the garage but that's not always the case. Quite often when I went over there, I would see ICE cars parked at the charging points blocking the EVs from charging. We are just not ready for EVs on a massive scale.

In California, they would like you to get on a bicycle or public transportation. Unfortunately, neither is safe. I see a real problem if the existence of hybrids does not continue for a long time.
@polystictus
@polystictus Год назад
I have read a bit about carbon neutral fuel before and have high hopes for it. I'm a bit pessimistic about the cost but at any "reasonable" level, it will be the savior of collector cars. I could certainly see a severe limitation on access to gasoline and high price plus potentially a limitation on the use of such ICE cars at some point in the future. If E-Fuel gets reasonable enough, it might make the switch over to electric far more painless as there will still be a choice. It could also extend the life of the manufacturing of hybrids which I find to be the best of both worlds. I also agree that minerals for batteries may become more difficult to get and the problems and pollution involved in the access to them better known to the public who is being indoctrinated into the EV direction. Most of the younger generation will embrace the EV's but there are ICE vehicles that are too important to end up as only museum specimens with lesser ones ending up in wreaking yards if fuel is cost prohibitive for them. Jalopnic says E- Fuel plants are planned for Tasmania and Texas. Another point...I don't expect the cost of electricity to go down and have heard that the cost of "fueling" an EV is now more expensive than a gasoline powered vehicle. Happy to hear the race car project is progressing well. I would never have thought of dry ice....
@FredsFullThrottle
@FredsFullThrottle Год назад
These are all great points, thanks for sharing! TBH for abundant cheap electricity I'm very hopeful for nuclear fusion at some point and we're getting closer, though that's a tech that is perpetually "20 years away", so I'm not holding my breath. The dry ice trick is something we learned from another RU-vidr (ChrisFix) who made a bunch of videos about his Lemons car build (another BMW E46 no less!). Agreed, never would have expected the insulation to get cold enough from the dry ice. We're learning all kinds of neat tricks along the way. Have a nice day Terry! -Fred

If anyone can do it, it is Ze Germans! Most people don’t know this, but for the last 1-2 years of WWII, after the Allies cut off their oil supply, the Germans made most of their gasoline from coal, a feat never performed before or since. Those guys are true alchemists.
