I like how he disarmed us by talking about the Ultramarines and the Salamanders and then smacked us with that Night Lord story.

Something interesting about the salamanders is due to the marines long lives they can be around for generations. If you were a nocturnian and you had one as a relative they would probably be that one cool uncle/grandpa who always comes with the best gifts

It's funny because you can be a parent on Nocturne, have a child in your 20s. By your 30s he get recruited to become a space marine. And then after a decade of gene forging and basic training, your son shows up as a dude twice your size, and you're still in your 40s or 50s. It would be fun for parents to be like: Do your homework Sha'Zel! Your uncle is a space marine, and you're failing calculus.

Imagine the weird exception of being a Space Marine with adoptive children, like, you'd be killing xenos and heretics with twice the drive

Ultramarines can still maintain ties to their mortal families, there’s some instances of it. They’re also taught to maintain relations with humans of a diplomatic nature. So not as much as the Salamanders but they’re definitely a close second.

Word Bearers seeing their families seems like a punishment for the family, more than anything else.

Thing is with their extended lifespans, Astartes may well be visiting their great great _x_ neices and nephews. Families might even have a form of "ancestor worship" about the Astartes from their line a few centuries ago. If your family history included a sibling of one of your ancestors being an Astartes _and they're still around,_ then that would be a big talking point in the family. What would the reaction be of the Astartes in question if another Astartes was produced from his 'lineage'? Thousand sons are basically scholars who just so happen to be in the wrong place, wrong time, wrong dimension all at once. The worst part is that they practically dissappear when their curse peaks.

I just got reminded of that story where a old chapter serf thinks about how he joined the service of the chapter. His mother died and he promised he’d always look after his little brother, even after the little brother became an astartes.

The people of Nocturne must have unbelievable pride for their space marines. While most places would be proud enough to know their sons are going to become the emperor's angels, the people of Nocturne get to see their sons returned to them regularly and witness them in their full glorious armour. And to have the marines also care for their community and not just throw them aside would make any citizen of Nocturne love their marines

Salamanders sound like a win to me burning heretics for the emperor and spending time with my family afterwards nothing would be better 🗿

Another reason I love the Salamanders. Visiting mom and dad on off days to remain compassionate and thereby human. The fiery rage of war may alter the branches and leaves, but the roots stay ever the same.

Salamanders are my favorite because of this. Ik in this setting its all about grim dark but i love that the sallys try to keep there humanity. I also think khan should be like this as he is so underrated and he uses commen sense. Id imagine he would want his own warriors to be empathetic towerd human life. Imagine if khan did this same thing in secret as to not show his true colors yo anyone. That would be so good

It'd also be hard for Astartes to 'go home' when they might be on active duty for a century straight. Imagine coming home after a century, and then trying to look up your family, to find out maybe you've got some distant relatives left, but all your immediate family passed away 40 years ago. You could try to contact descendants, but there'd be almost a wall between you and them; they'd view you as one of the Emperor's Angels and nigh-unreachable, and you wouldn't be able to talk to them about anything because of the generational distance. It's kinda sad actually. At least the Salamanders get to visit more regularly. For a deathworld, Nocturne is stable in terms of its population. Not like Baal, where any step could be your last. If visits happen every few years, you could concievably visit your immediate family multiple times before you're dealing with grandchildren and further. Even then, because you've been 'around' more than other chapters, you're still a semi-active part of your family. "That's uncle Del'Kar. Last time he came to the reunion was 20 years ago! It's good to see him. And he's gone up a few ranks!"

Imagine being from a different chapter and wanting to spar with you battle brother, but he responds with "Sorry brother, I have to help my father fixing our family truck and then get groceries and cook dinner with my mother"

I can imagine Astartes doing recreational activities during campaigns and Training, discussing philosophy and History as well as meditating over certain ecclesiarchic texts. As of interactions with normal humans, there are oft personal chapter servant's for that. Maybe an entire Family dedicated to serve an Astartes over the decades and centuries.

Some astartes: "I know I once had parents, but have no recollection of any." Salamander: "Mum, dad! I'm here for Sunday dinner!"

Some Blood Angels paint in free time, Space Wolves drink a lot, sometimes with non Marines when on other worlds, and when on Fenris and between duties they can travel on leave, sometimes fight creatures on their world in whims.

The ravenguard have depression naps to take, red wine to drink, lame poetry to write, and a cure album to swipe from dad's old room.

Truly a Night Lords moment

A funny thing I read in a Space Wolves novel implied the idea that they probably could go visit their family if they wanted to (Space Wolves get free time to go hunt on their own and shoot the breeze anyways), but because Fenris is so deadly by the time an aspirant actually becomes a full marine there is a very significant chance their whole family is dead by now, having lived to the ripe old age of 20.

What got me about the Night Lord's mom being shot is that a fellow astartes that he grew up with and was friends with before they ascended was right next to him and DID recognize her. Then he proceeded to tell the first that it was his mother. That story is dark af but really well written.

Imagine meeting your stepson and a 7 foot behemoth shows up

I remember the chapter master of the blood ravens (he was still just a member from a company) went to visit his dad and ended pretty much like how it would end for me and mine, astartes or not lol

Imagine a SW seeing his older brother after becoming a blood claw. Pretty sure something like that would happen alot given their culture.

What about Primarch's? I know they're all busy with work, trying to save or destroy the Imperium but surely they can at least find the time to phone their dad on fathers day.

The Caracharodons chaplain I believe (he is now dead) remembered his brother sneaking aboard the Astartes recruitment when he was supposed to stay behind and protect the family.

Salamanders also adopt everything that isnt nailed down, and Space wolves have been known to marry even after being recruited.
