Not everyone can afford to go to art school. The good news is that concept artists are hired based on their skill not their degree. So here are a few ideas on how you can improve on your own and teach yourself concept art. Unfortunately you're going to have to assess your own weaknesses, and formulate your own curriculum.
-Assess your strengths and weaknesses.
-Constantly schedule time to improve on your weaknesses.
-Schedule your own projects based on games you love. Set up a daily routine as if you're already a concept artist on those projects, and the fan forums are your audience.
- Run with your successes, and keep doing them in order to keep enthusiastic about your craft.
-Improve your skillset EVERY day with tutorials from pros.
- Get feedback from gamers who play the games you want to design for.
Things I've worked on:
Overwatch (PC, PS4)
League of Legends (PC)
Diablo 3 (PC,PS4)
Hearthstone (Mobile, PC)
Burning Crusade (PC)
Wrath of the Lich King (PC)
Indivisible
Unsung Story
Final Fight Streetwise (PS2)
He Man (GBA)
Terminator 3 (GBA)
CannonBallers (Mobile)
CreeD
Twilight Monk
Ikeda
Nova Colony
Galaxy's Edge
SodaPopSoldier
Millenium Actress
Goblins and Gnomes

I may go to schoolism if it works in 6 years. I'd love to meet Bobby. FZD schools is like 3millions RSD and that's quite a lot since here lowest wage is 25000 dinars that's $248 or so

@Wexen Art Schoolism is NOT for beginners at all! Basic fundamentals, you learn from youtube or Skillshare. Skillshare is $1.34 for 2 months. WAY cheaper than Schoolism and FAR MORE courses!!!

I schedule my sessions like around midnight before going to bed. I got tired of excuses especially when going outside for not having a sketchbook on me and when I did have it, a 5 minute wait for the bus was not enough time. Now I do it every time I get the chance, even if it’s to draw a small detail from a bag or element from scenery.

I would personally love to see your early portfolios, which you submitted to companies, as well as the portfolio you sent that landed you the jobs. I think it would help us get an idea of how far or close we are to that. Plus I.m curious :)) and I.m sure others are too
@TrentKaniuga
@TrentKaniuga 5 лет назад
I don't think that would actually help you though. The bar is always raising. A portfolio that would get you hired in 2006 will not get you hired at the same company today. None of the employees are the same, none of the industry standards are the same. The bar is always rising.

@Lulu Bell, so many factors besides portfolio that get an artist a job in a studio. I've known supervisors to reject portfolios that had artwork better than theirs. :/ If a place is looking for a $5 artist, and a $20 artist shows up....that $20 artist will be rejected. :/ Best thing to do is to look at what the company is making and that's your bar. Be able to fit into production. Have the relevant subject matter. Network as well. Meet people in person. People like working with people they can get along with. Start entering contests online, keep that Instagram full of art. :)

To be real honest, I just want to be an educator. Is that odd? Like everyone else wants to be a concept artist for some AAA company but I feel like concept artists or illustrators has never been given the time to shine for what they do best! Which is making every detail count. Here in my country, you guys never get credit for the amount of work done and I wanna just educate the youth........idk I feel like artists get taken for granted unnecessarily... but I feel like my drawings are just meh, it doesn’t have that concept art oomf to it but like you said you just gotta push through and reevaluate my drawings keep growing :’] you’re amazing btw ❤️❤️

I feel people don't really need school for art. Especially when you're just there to learn how to draw. You do need to go to school for the loans to afford the software & hardware, end with the portfolio, get the degree papers, and some of those neat doors open to you from studios looking to hire from schools.

Though I don’t play video games that much anymore I love watching them. Whenever I see people playing them with such creative characters and how happy they are it just makes me feel so inspired. I am in high school right now so I am still trying to work a lot of stuff out including a bunch of improvements for my art. Your video was very helpful and it made me excited again to keep working and to not give up on try to reach my goal of being a concept artist one day.

I really struggle with that mentality, if someone tells me no, my first response is "oh okay." it is really holding me back from even starting, but every day I think, "I just want my imagination to be sharable" to draw, to animate, to just show...but it is so hard for me to motivate myself past that. thanks for the video trent, they (and the discord) really really help to give me those little bursts of inspiration I need to at least practice several times a week.

there is also the idea that in many trades the key information is protected by the artist to avoid selling his mindset. but the fact you mentioned it means it's very key in stepping up... key skills learned the right way, not just seen on a tut, but individually deducted and applied in work real-time...

This past 2 weeks I've been moving and have been working from the time I get home from work till midnight every night to get everything moved and set up. It's hard work but the hardest part has been that I haven't drawn anything in this whole time! Its bitter sweet because, for one thing i'm frustrated that I can't draw right now but at the same time i'm proud of myself for making drawing *almost* every day (give or take my wrist hurting) such a habit that I feel kinda like shit if I go too long without it. This video makes me want to hit the ground running once i get my cintiq set back up. I'm self taught and even though it's harder I feel like it let's me really cherish the knowledge, the skill and the act of drawing itself. Anyway.... this is a rambly comment but this video was awesome and gives me the itch to get to drawing again! Soooon!!!!

This channel and the content is so delicious, I've had a graphic novel in my gut for 20+ years but I've been slow to pull the trigger to start. You've said in another video to feed off of the project to create the passion (paraphrasing) and not to wait for the passion to feed you. That was a real light bulb moment for me because I know that when I've not drawn for a long while but get back into it I get into the groove and start to think "I drew yesterday, I want to keep that going today". Your gumroad downloads are calling to me... a friend wanting to help boost me over the hurdles of just starting "it". I know the general advice is to just start and learn from your mistakes and finish no matter what because you'll learn from the experience but what mental exercises would you recommend to help push a staller into a doer. I see the whole thing as a giant project and get lost in the middle of something I haven't even begun to start yet.
@TrentKaniuga

you got it! Start with an exciting scene and work it out in script. Set your tone, and capture that one scene very quickly. Thats your standard. Next you should formulate a plan and a schedule based on how long it took you to do that sample. Stick to your schedule.

Comp Sci major here, I was pretty salty about going to a tech school rather than an art school but your video has convinced me that I can’t let school be an excuse not to draw. Tbh I want to be a key animator/character designer but like you said, it’s something I have to do every day and I haven’t been doing that. Animation seems so intimidating to learn but I want to learn it so bad. Perhaps it’s not really any video game that gets me hyped *cough Elsword cough* but more so TV series. Watching passion projects like Mob Psycho and the Dragon Ball Super movie get me giddy for some reason. TL;DR time to pull a Deku *You Say Run starts playing*

I've been consuming your videos immensely recently to help me improve since my art is nowhere near the level it should be. They're very motivating!! I'm wondering if I should even try to go to an art college. I could go for another passion of mine at a cheaper school, but at the end of the day I'd much, _much_ rather be a video game artist. But the other degree would likely mean a more stable job (that I could go into private practice with)- but, at the same time, video game art is my passion. Granted, I could theoretically do both, too... but at the same time, it would hard to be a cosplayer, video game artist, and have another job at the same time.

Hey Trent, I am a 32 year old full-time art student at a university and I'm learning very little about concept art/illustration. Most of my learning comes from studies at home. I'm enrolled because, although I'm not learning as much, it beats working 40+ hrs a week doing back breaking labor just to survive and have little energy left to draw. Is it realistic to say that I should fight through the fatigue and just draw or should I just give up and pursue something more suitable for my lifestyle?

Hey dude I'm doing through the same thing almost , I'm 19 but not in school. During the final years of hs i did all the research and thinking and came the conclusion that i cant afford to go the the proper schools for art and theres no point in going to a school i can hardly afford to learn next to nothing. I come from a "family' with not a lot of money so i was always at the short end of the stick and to add insult to injury i wanted to be an artist, not the doctor or what ever my parents want me to be. So things happen and i have to work over 40 hours a week now to get by right out of high school and it is the most depressing thing ever. during high school i was making so much progress with art putting in hours a day to become a concept artist, but work ruined a lot for me i couldn't adjust, i developed bad habits and didn't draw for months. i felt frustrated angry so much was thrown around i really wanted to quit i thought i should just do something and give up on it. There is just so much emotion that i cant put in to this. But the one thing i want to share to people is how important willpower is and how you should train it like your life depends on it. if its the life you want, then its not even an option to sit idle. After a while i wanted to scream at myself, i couldn't believe the type of person i have become and i realzed that nothing and i mean NOTHING can change me but myself. I took a giant step back looked up looked down looked around, zoomed out and really think about my next step. I looked at my mistakes and learned on them. i reformed the bad habits into good ones, figured out to work the same hours and still be able to draw. My way was to work afternoons for 8-9 hours then come home and draw for another 5 then sleep the day. its a system that has the best results for me and feels best for me so you could find one for yourself its hard but its possible. The way i was able to make it work for me now is the way i think about things, my mindset as always been "do my best and do whats right" Yours could be different so this will take a bit of digging to make work, i cant say that this is the best and only way of thinking about things and i wont say it because theres many ways to success right? I think i went of on a tangent but i sure it will still help someone(kinda wanted to get that off mychest as well) Point is just dont ever give in to other thoughts and emotions. if art is your thing and you love it, THERE IS NO MORE SUITABLE LIFESTYLE! the art life is what you want and what you *_will_* work for.

@tsorakin.....dude, you're asking for life advice without explaining much of anything. This is not a fair question to ask. You haven't even stated what your goals are, and you're asking someone if you should quit? Dude....seems like you answered your own question. :/ IF your WHY isn't strong enough, any excuse to quit will be enough. :/

@shovel where do you live? What State? Did you get into a Trade? I can state this to any artist out there. Get into a Trade while working on your art. Reason being, you will be working with your hands, you will be interacting with people, you will be developing the soft skills that will aid you in a studio environment if that is your goal. Also Trades pay the same and sometimes MORE than art jobs in studios! :)

@@MrRossT1 What is a Trade exactly? Is it a facility where artists meet?
