As for Tokindada Tsunayashiro's assassination, he mentions quite directly early on in the trilogy that the nameless assassin is the child of the assassins he hired to attempt to kill him in the first place. I had to go re-read it and even played through BBS' CFYOW parts and found that Tokinada called the hit out on himself. The young assassin was the child or at least related to the first group that tried to kill him on his own orders as he used them to kill his entire family. I hope this helps!

I love that Tokinada was the final villain (so far) because he represents the faction that started much of this chaos to begin with: The Noble Families. I love the fact that he'd so evil that Yoruichi would rather be under Aizen than him. The fact he could easily emotionally attack Shunsui, Byakuya (two men known to keep their cool much of the time) and others shows that he knows he has reach to touch them but they can't touch him so easily. The fact he has the powers to help change the world for the better but he would rather destroy is scary because villains like Aizen, Koga, Kiriya, Amagai, Ginjo and others did what they did for personal gain and you make change but.... Tokinada just wanted to put all the secrets out there just to see what happens.

I remember hearing Kubo had more involvement in Can’t Fear Your Own World. So that explains why it fits better.

7:05 The real reason why fans care more about CFYOW than SAFWY is the former got both a fan translation and official translation so we can actually read the damn thing. SAFWY has nothing but a summary,

I think Tokinada being killed by a nameless assassin is ironic as the man who tried to make a god is killed by some random assassin. He tried so hard to be a torrential force in the history books and he died to what can be written off as politics between the aristocracy.

I'd argue the two prior kenpachi HAVE to be overkill or it would seem weird for them better the name. If they were scaled to the average captain, I think that would be a tad lackluster. Many of them got their positions by slaying the previous one.

An immediate thought I came up with while being reminded of the anciently foreseen dream the soul king had. Yhwach, his son, killed him as his dream dictated. Yhwach, while soul king, dreamed about Ichigo "his son" killing him.

It was rather jarring seeing Yoruichi want to 'silence' Hisagi at the end, especially with the menacing and paranoid tone she espouses. Then you remember she's a noble and an assassin who certainly ended many lives to keep the aristocracy's secrets hidden during her time leading the Stealth Force. Though to be fair the tone of that conversation she and Kisuke shared implies that they want more honorable people to be the arbiters of change and to pick up from where they only followed orders and obeyed, especially as far as Kisuke is concerned.

I feel it's fairly obvious that the part about Urahara's true reason for creating the Hogyoku is tied into his backstory which was told to Narita by Kubo. Hopefully we get to see that backstory some day. Also it has been confirmed by Kubo that Urahara lied about his reasons for putting the Hogyoku in Rukia; I don't think it's particularly unlikely to believe he lied about his reasons for creating it in TBTP.

Good vid, but I disagree with your take on Kenpachi. I feel him being overpowered helps to contextualize from others' pov how monstrously powerful he can be. More importantly though, i view him whipping Hikone around and defeating ikomikidomoe as actually vital to the story. I will concede that it may be a little heavy handed, but, narratively speaking, Kenpachi is really there to teach Hikone a lesson: that there are people he simply cannot defeat. This is especially poignant after Tokinada sics him on his Aura, his mother figure, and leaves him for dead. The two things Hikone knew how to do were serve Tokinada and do battle, and both of these things just crumbled before Hikone's very eyes; his worldview has shattered. This is when Shuhei steps in and uses his Bankai to really show Hikone that sometimes you are totally helpless and there's nothing you can do but humble yourself. The reason Kenpachi cuts down ikomikidomoe is because the story isn't supposed to be about Shunsui and the gotei fighting a giant hollow in the valley of screams, it's about Shuhei maturing and accepting the part of him that his zanpakuto is, and he truly embraces that by showing Hikone his bankai. Shuhei's development is complete after he sets Hikone on the right path and is even offered the pathway to captainhood following the story, showing that his journey is complete; he used his Bankai for the first time, not to kill, but to teach and to bring life to Hikone who now sees there is so much more to life than serving and killing. Ultimately I think Kenpachi played a really crucial role in making that happen, if not him then maybe Shunsui or Urahara, but I really don't think the story should've been Shuhei saving the day with a bankai perfectly suited to defeating Hikone after everyone else failed.

Given Gin betrayed Aizen, I think the idea was very much to make Tosen the *real* confidant, real 2nd in command.

I loved the twist when Hirako used his shikai on Hisagi to prevent him from seeing Kyoka Suigetsu release right before his eyes. Too often manga/anime "tactics" come down to just each side taking turns showing off their new abilities - while for me the most satisfying fights are those where instead already established abilities are used in clever and creative ways.

Tokinada's death was pure karma. More so since it was at the hands of the relative of the assassins Tokinada savagely butchered in part 1. Sure being assassins they don't warrant sympathy for obvious reasons, but what he did to them was ghastly and drove home what a maniac he was.

I think it's weird that Mayuri pick some the weakest Sternritter to be in his Corpse Unit when he could have gone for the characters like Askin and Hashwalth but at the same time he did the exact same thing with the Arrancar and didn't revive a single Espada so maybe Mayuri for some reason goes for the weak ones on purpose.

Tosen wasn't dying. His wound wasn't even close to Hiyori's. Given his instant regeneration, he could definitely have survived.

idk, i don’t mind the fake dual wielding zanpakutos. it isn’t necessary, but it doesn’t really hurt anything. what i do like is hisagi’s zanpakuto being the chain. i like it because it means hisagi didn’t truly understand his zanpakuto, and neither did us.

Hey Tommo another amazing video. Always love hearing your thoughts. I wanted to try to maybe shed some light on Hisagi's continued loyalty to Tosen. I actually hope you end up doing a full character analysis on Kaname Tosen at some point, because I think he's actually quite nuanced despite his lower popularity when compared to Gin and Aizen. I think that kinda plays into why Hisagi feels the way he does about him. The idea that his time spent with Tosen and the lessons and morals he learned from him were not lies despite Tosen's actions. I think the tears that Tosen cries for Sajin Hisagi and Himself at the end of his life were real. In CFYOW volume 1 we learn that aizen chose to end Tosen's life because Tosen made Aizen promise to do so should he ever find peace among the soul society. Something he beleived would be an insult to Kakyo's memory since the soul society did nothing to punish her killer due to his royal status. He was a very genuine man in my opinion. Kensei has every right to resnt him for the betrayal. But just as easily, Hisagi has every right to defend the captain who taught him to be a shinigami.

I'm hoping the light novel contents get included in the anime somewhere down the line

I think zaraki is one of the strongest captains, so it's only natural that they would take him to battle someone like hikone & ikkomikidomo since they mostly fight with brute strength too, shinji literally said in the manga that if zaraki dies they'll lose the war, i think that's because of the asset he is to the soul society, not to mention that unohanna said zaraki gets stronger with every battle so aftet his tybw battles we didn't get an idea on how strong he had become and this help put things in perspective.

I’d say Tokinada has to be the most evil villain in Bleach, with Tsushima as the second evilest villain. Also I love how Hikone has a chain around his zanpakuto (or whatever it is) that goes around him

Tosen always seemed like a Hinamori to me. Just how Aizen disposed of her when he was done playing, he did the same with Kaname and Gin. He softened after being defeated and I like that. But trying to retcon him as always having hidden soft side doesn't sit right with me either

In the anime, it seems like Aizen mercy killing him is more likely and is supported by Komamura yelling Aizen. Hard to deny it. I get the soul suicide part, but I still believe Aizen mercy kill is what actually happebed

What if Nimaiya and Ichibe "create" zanpakuto spirits like that. The two of them could come across a hollow with interesting abilities.. Ichibe could assign it a name and Nimaiya would then give it a form by way of an asauchi..and presto! A zanpakuto spirit!

I remember when Ichigo learned of the true nature of his zanpakto in the original manga my take away was no one really has two zanpakutō or a constant release shikai.

I really really loved it! I took my time but once the Tokinada unleashed Kyoka Suigetsu I read it until the end. There were a lot of things that I really appreciate about the book and there were ones you mentioned I didn't even remember, and its amazing. IN particular, I really like the theories of Kisuke being a bad guy, and part of the last noble family (kept secret by notion of Kubo I think)

It's entirely reasonable to tie the Hogyoku scientific research to the Soul King, considering he was the perfect model as he was a mix of Quincy, Shinigami, and Hollow.

All these years later and I still consider Ichibei to be the strongest/wisest/most intelligent shinigami there has ever been. He almost transcends what it means to be a shinigami.

Aizen grinning at Kamamura could have been a trick of camera angles to make the audience think that Aizen was looking at him. But would it be possible that Aizen was actually looking at Tosen reveling in a comrades request to be fulfilled(Being the old Tosen, as a comrade)? (in some twisted sense) Forgive me, I haven't read CFYOW. Just spit balling. and the thing about soul suicide might have had something to do with Aizen doing his own thing with Tosen like what Kisuke did with Masake just a little different.

Weird - I completely forgot about soul suicide and always assumed that Aizen mercy killed Tosen which angered Hisagi and dog-cap. I also thought that Tosen wanted Aizen to remove him from the cycle of reincarnation - not just kill him. I loved the extra background.

Don't know if you were aware of a book/movie called a clockwork Orange but the main character Alex is 150% who tokinada is based off of. If you've never read it I implore you to do so, very dark but incredible, the movie is great too directed by Stanley Kubrick

Something being overblown and feeling like it was made by a fan is honestly what I really like in Narita's other work for another franchise, Fate/Strange Fake. It has a really similar approach to stuff that Narita wrote for Bleach where he takes a small pieces out of much bigger Universe and starts to expand on them in completely insane directions. Ask any Fate fan that read F/SF and they will say that it's crazy, but at the same time it's full of reference and nods to previous works/events/characters and such. I like how enthusiastic Narita about his Bleach stuff, even if it sometimes borders on fanfiction, but for me its a selling point rather than something detrimental.

I think my favorite part of this book was the amazing way Shinji used Sakanade to subvert Kyoka Suigetsu.

The girl who kills Tokinada isn't carrying out a hit, she's getting revenge because Tokinada killed her clan of assassins, of whom she is the last one.

Tokinada ordered the hit on his family and himself to hide that he planned on killing his family. The way you're supposed to see his death by an unknown assassin is that karma has come to take him in a way opposite of his great ambitions. He was killed by someone who's name will never be known, in a place where no one can see it. He also brought on his own demise despite all of his planning and there was no one he could drag down with him.
