So what does a Lord do these days? Is it just title passed down over the years? What purpose does it serve these days
@joelwillems4081
@joelwillems4081 2 года назад
@@chrisconrad9133 It's just an empty title for most. Some have money, but most titled classes on the main European continent have little to nothing but the title. Two world wars will wipe out family wealth, especially if the family isn't used to earning a living. In some countries the title allows some political power, like to serve on the House of Lords. This guy claimed all his fancy possessions belonged to a trust to keep it out of taxes and debtors. John Paul Getty did the same when he was the wealthiest person in the world just to avoid taxes.

@anovemberstar
@anovemberstar 2 года назад
you're making an assumption they bought those things form benefit money. they may have been given to them or they may have had them long before they ended up on a benefit. No one is immune to ending up on a benefit. Divorce, death of a spouse, loss of job or income, a pandemic or a natural disaster - and it can happen to any one of us.
@jonguyton1
@jonguyton1 2 года назад
@@anovemberstar I does not matter how they got them or when. You should not go on government support until you have sold all unnecessary goods you own. If I have a 5 million dollar house that I bought before I got in financial trouble should I be able to keep it?
@EnterJustice
@EnterJustice 2 года назад
@@jonguyton1 I agree with your sentiment in general - you should not get benefits if you have sufficient assets to support yourself. On the other hand, you don't want the gov support conditions to make matters worse in the long term. Sure, people can sell their house to live off of the money for years. But when the money's gone, they're worse off than before - they might never be able to buy a home again and will be lifelong renters. Is that fair, if the circumstances for the gov support are of a temporary nature? A 5 million dollar home is excessive, sure. But where do you draw the line? What if it happens to be a terrible economy - is it really fair to force people to sell an asset at a loss to get support for a limited period of time? Also: it can be quite difficult to sell a 5 million dollar home. People with that kind of money often prefer to just buy land so they can build their own home. You can try to sell it below the value, but the upkeep involved in that kind of property might make it too expensive even if it's offered for free. So how do you plan on dealing with that? How much does personal responsibility matter, and how can you weigh these things? Some people irresponsibly took on debt for luxury goods or poorly thought out business schemes. Others had terrible luck and need some help to get back on their feet. At what point were you too irresponsible to qualify for help? Who will be the judge of this? And should we spend tax payer money on people to judge this? It's kind of like saying "people who [unhealthy habit] shouldn't get access to cheap healthcare!". On the surface, it sounds logical and fair. But once you start thinking about it, you go down the rabbit hole of real-world complexity.

My second "real" job was as a debt collector. I was too nice as an 18y/o kid on the phone but I actually did collect pretty good numbers. However, I didn't command nearly the fear and respect these fine gents get. Didn't command hardly any actually. At least I was only verbally assaulted instead of physically though!😬😂🤣

Wow these agents are so so kind, I wouldn't have the patience for this job. To stare at probably a million dollars worth of paintings & antiques and then to have the guy who's on VACATION tell me he's sending people to throw me out of the building? I'd be way past negotiating or talking any further. I'm chucking everything I see into a truck and leaving. I'd also certainly not be willing to talk to someone through a goddamn mail slot, ask her to kindly call me and have her yell "I CAN'T HEAR YOU" like she's not the one who's holding the door shut. Damn I just really don't understand why these people think they don't have to pay their debts and I really really don't understand why they then play the victim like "oh of course i don't have thousands of dollars in cash in my hand right now". Yah thats usually because responsible people pay their individual bills on time, or if they can't they sell things they don't need, or they arrange a payment plan, or pick up extra work, or a variety of things that stop debt collectors from showing up and asking for the lump sum. Goddamn idiots who think whining and crying is going to magically pay their bills.

That pub in the second segment... it looks like it was owned by Steve and Ian Carvell since approx. 2006 and was running as "The Watchmaker" for a year or so until it was closed 2016/2017 then reopened as the Kiki Lounge before scamming a bunch of people and closing again in 2017. The interesting part is that when it was operating as Kiki Lounge and scammed all those people it was owned/run by a "Sarah" Carvell. It would appear that the Carvell clan's personal paperwork archive could make for an intriguing read at times. You can hardly blame them for getting confused about which business is representing what or who is responsible for which. What, with all this complicated paperwork, really who has time to think about paying contractors? I wonder who the next Carvell is in line to be the on-paper licensee for the next business name to base itself in the same building. "CUSTOMERS of a Coventry gay bar which appears to have closed just weeks after opening say they have been left out of pocket after not having their deposits returned. The Kiki Lounge & Loft - formerly Earlsdon Cottage and The Watchmakers - only opened as a new cabaret and mixed LGBT/ heterosexual venue in Warwick Street in Earlsdon at the end of March. But by the middle of May it was up for sale online for PS115,000. Customers now say the venue's owners won't reply to their requests to return deposits for VIP booths and drinks. Angry comments have been left on the bar's Facebook page, asking for money to be refunded. The Telegraph has contacted managing director and Kiki Lounge licensee Sarah Carvell for a comment, but so far the business has not responded."

There is a ministry of sound poster on the background that says 2017, so by your research, it “changed hands” just after this segment was filmed. The owners obviously have a lawyer advising them to shift around assets through multiple companies and different owners. Had no idea that it was an LGBT bar (by the looks of it). That was an interesting find!
