Can the Retro Games C64 recreate the 80s legend I never had?

I never experienced the Commodore 64 back in the day - but now Christmas has come early and all that has changed - in a way.
Will I like it 40 years later with this Retro Games C64 recreation?
Is this the epitome of golden age home computers reinvented for today?
Is it the ideal Christmas gift for the nostalgic retro gamer?

I got one of these in 2023 as I had the original but I don't remember ever using it for gaming and wanted to try the games that were available for it. The killer app for me was running BASIC in those days for me. I use to enter code listings from magazines for different programs. After learning programming, created my own Monopoly game from scratch that used all the memory available in the machine that I had to remove spaces in the code as I added more features to the game.

I call systems like this "retrocomputing on easy mode". That's not a bad thing. It's wonderful to plug the old breadbin in and start playing games or running BASIC, just like one would have with a real C64 back in the day. The physicality of the thing, especially the keyboard feel and layout, more than makes up for any latency or compatibility issues present with the excellent emulation core included.

The thing that makes this a step beyond other console re-releases is how open it is. It can run user provided disk, cartridge, and tape images (the latest firmware has good tape controls), so you can sample nearly everything that was released for the Commodore 64 software wise (provided you can find an image for it). You can also make your own software for it using a modern IDE (like visual studio code), or develop on the machine itself if you want a more authentic 80's experience (w/o going the route of maintaining 40+ year old hardware). Fully agreed on the gamepad, it's much better for playing longer sessions (at least for my hands, to each their own).

Love this thing! I picked one up a couple years ago and it's great. Vice emulator even emulates the excruciating long loading process. The C64 Maxi makes it an option if you're into that level of accuracy. I prefer quick loading games but that's me. Thanks for the video my friend, good stuff indeed!

I REALY LOVE MY C64 ❤❤❤ FOREVER ❤❤❤❤

Nice review. Soulless turns into a Impossible Mission style game once you get past a certain point. There are also save point further into the game. It's very good and I love the music.
@hazy33
You had a BBC, that had THE best BASIC of any 8 bit. It was so fast!
@japangamejunk
definitely an improvement on the c1 c2 c3 c4 c5 c6 c7 c8 c9 c10 c11 c12 and about as good as the other 35 with the exception of c51 which really stood out
@FlyingSurprise
I love my C64c. It has to be the real deal.
@sluxi
I think this is a great retro tribute. There is also a VIC-20 version. Just waiting for the company to come with a similar A500 system.

Keep my original hardware going, by adding heatsinks to the Vic chips. :) Still ahead of it's time. :)
@ZxSpectrumplus
You can use almost any gamepad with it. Maybe need some slight configuration in the config files. I have tried 8bitdo, PS4 controllers on it. Currently just use a wireless Logitech F710 (the one used in the famous OceanGate submersible disaster).
@bluedotraccoon
Nice - can you do one on the mighty ZX Spectrum next?
@TheFyend
My C64 Maxi was a lemon. It froze running way too many games. Some games worked without issue but tons just froze after starting a few seconds into gameplay. I returned it and just run bare metal C64 emulator on a Raspberry Pi now and it works far better.

Wow.. In Yugoslavia around 84....these were like the last threadripper.. Pulling away from competition from all that obscene power they possessed.. At 1 Mhz
@valley_robot
where bdid tou buy it , have the mini and id love this
@NicolasCorte
Is the option for scanlines included?
@n00blamer
HDMI and modern displays are TOO GOOD for low-res fun, the games look so different from CRT which blurs everything and the graphics are designed for that. Things look worse on better modern display, how counter-intuitive. :_O I regret the day I gave away (!) a Commodore 1084S... have to buy one off ebay, dammit..
@bmgrooh
You do not mention anything about loading programs and demos. Can I open types of .prg or .tap or .d64 etc.?
