Over winter can be a great time to kill or control moss in the lawn that has been building up with all the rain. In this video i look at 3 methods to control moss in the lawn and the immediate effects a lawn treatment can have on moss. Warning - Iron will stain hard surfaces!

Have found your instructions and advice useful because you are clear and concise. Am attempting to improve my large rear garden lawn but it is still far too wet on my heavy clay soil. I tend not to want too much chemical attention but lawn has been infested with moss and clover. My professional scarifier will continue to remedy both of these.

I've used the Pro Kleen before at the volume it states on the tub. To get it to the professional ratio you mentioned for the pro product, how much more would I use and is there any drawbacks doing this? On eof those tubs goes a very long way..

Great vid I've recently brought some of this stuff and the same sprayer. What dosage do you dilute your iron sulphate at? I have a 120m2 garden and find it really hard calculating how much water and grams of iron I would need to do. Any help would be appreciated.

Man…. Your moss is tall! Mine is really thick and taking over my yard again.. I had it killed off for a year or two but it came back w a vengeance. I mow lower too so I was hoping this was over for good but it’s just all over my property. 😩 I’m wondering if I do a sand top dress after aeration if it will help a drainage problem I might have. I have to scarify my lawn again after scalping and throw down some iron again.

Just had to do a lot of our lawn with soluble iron phosphate, had a warm winter and moss is taking over the whole neighborhood

Moss grows best in an acidic soil. It tends to grow around our pine needle beds. Adding lime fixes the issue for us.

Would be good to see a video on how much Iron Sulphate you use on your lawn. I always get paranoid that I will kill my lawn by adding too much.

I use it monthly, i have a high PH too which it can help reduce i believe

Hello, it's not allowed in UK and no real alternatives for selective control for the key culprit grasses like POA

@@IrishRanger2452 it's banned for a good reason, we have a declining bee population in the UK. Products like Tenacity are super bad for the environment, please don't use this product on your lawn. It can also have serious health concerns for yourself if you do no apply it properly.

Pretty sure most may see the op as an advert. Garden helplines are available and all will generally give knowledge for free.. that is what it is in general. . Some guy posted pictures of my garden a few years back, then had the cheek to charge people to copy the pictures. I was pretty ok with that in the main although it would have been nice to explain the pics would be sold on. I keep tabs on the guy and his site to make sure he does not run advertising for garden products on his site as he lives about 3000 miles away and needs to respect certain stuff

hi bud, would it be a good idea to scrafify first if the moss is extremely matted just that me thinking is that ifbi put my scrafify on highest setting to brake up the surface of the moss then apply the iron?

Ferrous sulphate heptahydrate is an organic compound. It is a byproduct of steel making. If you buy it as a soluble powder keep it tightly sealed as it will clump on contact with the moisture in the air. Chelated iron products work better in soils that have elevated ph and they do last longer but are more for solving deficiencies in the soil than just getting moss blackened.

I saw landscaping companies using this typo of spreader they used them to spread salt around businesses to I will will say look for it where they buy there equipment

The iron treatment will also darken up your green grass. One bit of caution though. Do NOT spray the iron solution on any hard surfaces like driveways, walkways, or patios as it will leave a rusty coloration unless IMMEDIATELY washed off with water. For a granular iron application blow or sweep the iron granules back into the grass immediately after applying and definitely before it gets wet.

I know this was a year ago but ill put my input in as used iron sulphate for the first time recently. I used 5l of water for 50sqm which was enough, with 125 Grams of the powder mixed in. Sprayed lawn last week due to scarify lawn in a few weeks then put another treatment down then gonna seed then put starter fertiliser down. Gonna keep on top of the moss this year as my back lawn on shady all winter and sun all summer one extreme to another.

If you are using chlorinated tap water leave it to stand for a couple of hours before adding ingredients and spraying.

I found dissolving builders lime and water applied with a watering can and rose to be far more effective than lawn sand. About 1 cup full to 1 gallon.

Would chelated liquid iron by lawnstar work just as good as something like moss out by Lilly Miller? To kill the moss?

I haven’t been able to find a liquid iron product marketed by Lilly Miller. I have found iron granules and liquid ammoniated soap of fatty acids, but no liquid iron. At least not where I live. Granules work, but it’s hard to control the application. The ammoniated soap works, but only during the dry season.

@@carlsdrumshop no the liquid iron is by law star. Moss out can be purchased as a liquid or granular forms and that is sold by Lilly Miller. Completely different products

Personally I dont rake mine out over the winter time, grass can't repair as it's not growing.

Yes, but in the spring the grass is actively growing so it will repair its self!

I think if I did this to my garden, I'd have about about three blades of grass. My lands mostly moss. Might try on a small area to see how it does.

Moss will only grow in wet shade. If your lawn area is well drained and in the sun moss won't be a problem. If it's not you'll be trying to kill it off for ever.

Honestly, the moss isn't there because you forgot to bring out iron. I would wish for a rather sustainable solution instead of what I perceive a quick fix. I think this is more of working on the conditions that let moss occur in the first place.

Exactly! Moss is a product of the natural conditions…you can kill it…but it will only grow back…if the conditions that promote moss growth aren’t changed.

From my days in the fire department: you CANNOT decontaminate leather. So why do many people think it is ok to wear shoe made of rubber/cloth/leather. your skin absorbs chemicals. Please everyone; wear rubber or similar boots when using chemicals. It is also a good idea to wear long sleeve shirt, goggles, rubber/nitrile gloves; your eyes will absorb chemical compounds and some will cause blindness. With some chemicals you will want to wear non vented goggles, rubber butyl gloves and a respirator. @ 2:18 wearing shoes with leather, @ 5:12 he found his rubber boots: Good.
