You’ve probably heard that taking vitamin C or zinc will keep you from getting sick, but it turns out that those popular cure-alls don't actually work.

Hey, if you have a cold, have yourself some lemon and honey tea. It won't get rid of the cold, but now you'll have lemon and honey tea. So that's something.
@Tismitch
@Tismitch 6 лет назад
I think lemon and honey tea works because the acidity of the lemon and the antimicrobial action of the honey work together to help prevent opportunistic throat infections after a cold or flu has led to damage to the protective systems there. It also tastes good so that helps too :)

Nothing you take will "get rid of the cold", but it's still worth taking some over the counter medication and drinking lemon and honey tea to relieve the symptoms and perhaps speed up your recovery.

Zinc has always worked on me when I take it in the first few days of my symptoms starting. Colds tend to linger in me for days or even weeks. When I treat with zinc, my colds tend to go away in 2 or 3 days.
@scorpy09
@scorpy09 6 лет назад
This has been my experience exactly. When I get a sore throat, I use Cold-eeze every few hours for a couple days. I usually get a fever after a few days which I believe confirms I have a cold. I used to have bad cold symptoms (40 years of experience) for 7 to 10 days, now the symptoms are significantly milder and shorter (the last 20 years). I might have a zinc deficiency, but it works for me. Others should not be discouraged from at least trying it a few times. I have not tried the nose product. 500 mg of vitamin C gives me diarrhea.

The "stay hydrated" advice could point to a possible reason why so many people swear by drinking orange juice if they have a cold. They think it's the extra vitamin C helping, but it's actually just them being more circumspect about staying hydrated, as a side effect.

See, the problem is that most people think the common cold is caused by bacteria, which it is not. A virus is much harder for your body to deal with, mostly because viruses replicate super fast, and are pretty durable.

@Aereto
@Aereto 6 лет назад
Considering it is 3 decades, your information contributes, but the tangible results of the project has yet to turn up. One thing I do know is that the rhinovirus mutates fast and frequently, and immune system will not adapt that rapidly to stop new cold viruses from causing symptoms.
@ozdergekko
@ozdergekko 6 лет назад
That's exactly the problem. Also, even at that time over 120 strains categorized in quite a number of serotypes (I don't remember how many) were known. It's probably even more now.
@maythesciencebewithyou
@maythesciencebewithyou 6 лет назад
The only thing that would help, is that everybody who gets sick stays home and doesn't infect others. Eventually the viruses would be eradicated, but somehow someone told us we need to get out of bed and go to work whether sick or not. I could be so easy. A general vaccine against the common cold will never exist with all the hundreds of strains. Good thing that those are viruses which a healthy immune system can handle without problems. But theoretically even a common cold virus could mutate in such a way that it might cause a pandemic.

Speaking from some experiences as a singer - the zinc wasn't so much to "cure" the cold as to give my body some extra ammo for the fight, though obviously that's also not a scientific approach. Zicam doesn't claim it'll cure colds; they say it'll help shorten duration and make the symptoms less severe while you have a cold - and they stress taking their product within that first 24 hours as being important as well. (Not defending them: but this is why I used that product; no magic claims.) At least some of the perceived effectiveness of these "cures" is due to the placebo effect, it seems. Of course I'm sure plenty of folks would challenge that too! As for the herbal products falsifying information...I'm not sure how anyone can be surprised.

Paid sick leave helps to keep the flu from spreading. Walmart for example treats every "unplanned" illness as an occurance. Every shift you miss due to flu is a separate occurance or incident. If you miss 5 days of work, that's 5 occurances. And yes, I've seen employees fired because they got the flu and racked up too many occurances. So every flu season, employees come to work and spread the flu to co-workers and customers.

"Nasal decongestants, over-the-counter cough medicine, & antihistamines show little to no benefit when it comes to decreasing cold duration or severity." But in my (admittedly, severely limited) experience, the best thing you can do to mitigate the _severity_ of cold symptoms is just to hydrate. Hydrate like the dickens. Hydrate enough that your urine runs clear. I've been following this rule since 1999 and have yet, in that time, to experience symptoms like these.

I remember hearing as a child that extra vitamin C supplementation doesn’t prevent colds or cure colds necessarily, but it does shorten them and make the symptoms less severe. I’ve taken vitamin C while sick before and I didn’t notice any effect except that if I took my cold medicine for symptom relief within minutes of the vitamin C intake, be it from a tablet or a powder drink like EmergenC or just regular old orange juice, I would throw up. Neither one alone would make me have to throw up, but the combination would. So I would have to wait at least an hour between my vitamin C and my cold medicine. But I’ve also heard that vitamin C is more effective for cold shortening in children than adults.

I suspect that having a diet rich in vitamins and minerals doesn't necessarily help you fight off infections, but you'll probably be healthier in general and suffer fewer adverse reactions due to infections. For example, if you're a slob who mostly just eats pork rinds, slim jims, and beer, you're probably way more likely to end up hospitalized by an infection than someone who's fit and eats plenty of fruits and vegetables.

That's completely unlike what I understood about Zinc. I use Zinc lozenges when I have a sinus infection to inhibit the spread of a sore throat into my larynx and chest. Over the last 6 years, I haven't had any post-nasal drip develop into a chest cold, and sore throats are much less severe than before I started using Zinc. I guess that's anecdotal, but I'm not giving lozenges up just because there is so little evidence for Zinc supplements or nasal sprays.

How much vitamin c was used in the experiments? 60 milligrams? That's enough to prevent scurvy, but it's not enough to prevent colds. Have experiments ever been conducted in which participants got 1 gram a day or more? I'm convinced that the results would be rather different.

If you drink water to swallow or dissolve supplements or herbal tea, then the added water might be the thing that prevents, shortens or lowers the severity of colds. This would not show up in studies because studies compare results to groups taking placebos which will include the added water to one's diet.

New update: a meta analysis study from 2020 revealed that zinc can actually help shorten the duration of symptoms and prevent a full on cold if taken within 24 hours of noticing these symptoms. This video was posted in 2017; remember that new studies are always evolving so it's very important to keep yourself updated with primary literature.

If I take about 10,000mg of vitamin C at the onset of a cold in the morning, it's usually gone by the afternoon. If not, I take 5-10,000mg more. Then it's usually gone by the end of the day, if not by the next morning. I have replicated this with my friends and family and it seems to work. I don't take any on a regular basis. I haven't had a cold for longer than a day in many years now. In some cases, I've taken up to 30,000mg of vitamin C in a day to fight off an infection, in which case is usually gone within a 24hr period. So it's worked for me.

So sensible advice still applies: to avoid infection, wash your hands often (especially after shaking hands or touching anything in public spaces), stay healthy (balanced diet, moderate exercise) and avoid touching your face. While infected: don't overexert yourself, stay hydrated and use painkillers or decongestants when/if needed to relieve symptoms if you want to feel less crappy even though they won't affect the actual virus itself. To prevent spreading it: cough and sneeze into a tissue, or cough into the crook of your elbow (you use it to touch things and people a whole lot less than your hands), wash your hands often, avoid unnecessary contact with other people.

To avoid colds: wash hands often, don't touch your face (especially any orifices incl. eyes) when hands are not freshly washed. Take long walks in the cold. Avoid people. No public transportation or malls. Don't work anywhere but home. The first point is the most important and meant seriously. ;) To eat healthy strengthens your immune system, but pills from the pharmacy? Nah...
