Using products such as vanilla is sometimes a gray area for many of us. Though, does the quantity we are adding to a cake(example) affect us? If we eat the whole cake, are we going to be intoxicated? No! But there are other exceptions that Shaykh Yasir talks about in the video above.

Summary: We begin with 3 main premises: 1) Prohibition on Khamr (any substance intoxicating the mind), which is mainly ethanol but not necessarily alcohol. 2) “Ma askara kathiruhu faqaliluhu haraam”: Anything intoxicates in reasonably large quantity, then even a drop of it is prohibited. 3) “Al-umuuru bimaqasidiha”: The action is judged by its intention. Based on these three premises, here are the ruling of selected samples of food/beverage: a) Light beer: Even a drop is haraam. b) Vanilla/vanilla extract with ethanol as preservative/solvent: Halaal because it will never intoxicate. c) Orange/apple juice with some small fermentation: Halaal and overlooked. d) Steak with red wine: Haraam because the intention is for the taste of alcohol. e) Marijuana cookies: Haraam, same ruling as the case of wine on steak. f) Kombucha tea: Assumed as Halaal if sold in marketplace under the US law. However, be careful with home-made brews as they might be naturally fermented all the way to be alcoholic.

I disagree with the Steak on Wine principle with the Shaykh, May Allah guide him and me to Islam. The reason being: 1. It cannot intoxicate you. 2. Taste as a ruling doesn’t hold any water. As wine that is non alcoholic can be used as well. That wine will give similar taste. However it would be halal. So the taste itself cannot be a ruling factor. However I will say it is Makrooh. It is better to call it makrooh. As we do not want wine normalized in the community. Extremely disliked. But sinful is odd.

He just proved Vanila extract is Haram. Two point he says ethanol kills u before it intoxicate u. That’s not true many people around the world use ethanol to get drank. So he is wrong. Point number two he says they drop a small amount of Vanila extract in a large amount of ice cream so it doesn’t matter how much ice cream u consume it will not intoxicate u. He is missing the point Ice cream is not Haram of course the Vanila extract is, if u consume a large amount of Vanila extract it will intoxicate u. So it’s Haram like the hadith says what intoxicate u in large amount is haram in small amount

@shaki60 As selamu aleykum brother. I guess I have to correct you. I think you should rewatch 2:45 There he is talking about "methanol". And after a quick search in the internet: Less than a tablespoon of pure methanol (10 milliliters) can kill you. ... Instead of becoming a harmless chemical building block, the body metabolizes methanol into toxic formic acid. Formic acid interferes with a cell's ability to make energy. An by the way, even pure "ethanol" can cause death: While ethanol is consumed when drinking alcoholic beverages, consuming ethanol alone can cause coma and death. Ethanol may also be a carcinogenic; studies are still being done to determine this. However, ethanol is a toxic chemical and should be treated and handled as such, whether at work or in the home. And for vanilla extract, I suggest quick search on islam qa. This is just an excerpt from the whole answer. (It seems that I can't post the link here) With regard to the ruling on eating vanilla, it is permissible even though it was mixed with alcohol during preparation, for two reasons: 1.Alcohol is not najis (impure) in a physical sense; rather it is taahir (pure) 2.The alcohol does not have any effect on vanilla; the one who consumes it does not become intoxicated and no effect of alcohol is seen when eating it. Rather whatever may become attached to the seeds during preparation disappears and leaves no trace in the seed. Something that is like this is not haraam to consume. We have mentioned the ruling on alcohol and that it is pure, and we have mentioned the ruling on foods and drinks to which some alcohol has been added, in the answers to questions no. 59899 and 146710. In the answer to question no. 33763 we quoted the following from Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him): Do not think that any ratio of alcohol that there may be in a thing makes it haraam; rather if the ratio is such that it will have an effect, in the sense that if a person drinks this liquid that is mixed with alcohol he will become intoxicated, then it is haraam. But if the ratio is very small and has diminished and left no trace, and it does not have any effect, then it is halaal. End quote. May Allah bless and reward you and all of us. Aameen

A salam alaikum brother/sister Im having the same problem here because when I search "can vanilla extract get you drunk" it says that studies show that 4 ounces of vanilla can get you drunk and what intoxicates in large is impermissible in small so I don't know if the vanilla is still halal

No. Not even a single drop. Unless used in medicine.
@zainmushtaq4347
@zainmushtaq4347 2 года назад
@@alexadebayo8687 you guys are missing the point. Vanilla extract consumed by itself might intoxicate you in large quantities, BUT when small quantities of vanilla extract is added to ice cream, it becomes a new substance: "ice cream infused with miniscule amount of vanilla extract", and it is now this new substance that has to be assessed on whether it intoxicates in large quantities or not -- which it doesn't. You could argue that adding wine or beer in small quantities also becomes permissible, but as the sheikh says in the video, there's another principle that has to apply -- the intention of the substance being added. If it's for the taste, it's haraam, but if it acts as a secondary product to achieve an effect (like preserving the flavor), then it's halal. If you're still skeptical: following your logic, shouldn't vinegar then also be haraam if it comes from wine, which is intoxicating? Vinegar becomes a new substance and isn't intoxicating in large quantities, so it's halal. While this isn't an accurate comparison, "ice cream with miniscule amount of vanilla extract" also becomes a new "substance", and this substance doesn't intoxicate in large quantities either, and the intention is to preserve the flavor of the ice cream. And Allah knows best :)

Very well explanation 👌 I have started my own kombucha company in India, some alcohol is naturally created as fermentation process, but commercial Kombucha in even larger quantities is not intoxicating, to feel any intoxication we have to drink 3-4 liters of the drink at one time which is not possible, so Kombucha is safe to consume if it is below legal limit.

Best thing to do is to just avoid stuff that contains alcohol. It's not a necessity. ..i'm sure we'll survive if we don't eat our favourite ice cream or cake. We have plenty of other substitutes that don't contain alcohol. If u ask me we are spoilt for choice and have too many luxuries these days. It's making us steer away from what we are actually here for...

@khudejabegum5295
@khudejabegum5295 4 года назад
Do apples and oranges contain alcohol? I was referring to alcohol. That's just my personal opinion. I believe it's best to stay away from that which is doubtful. I am not judging anyone for not doing the same. Too much of anything can also cause harm. Be they apples and oranges or not. Unfortunately Islam is as practical as each individual wants it to be. Also..just because something isn't 'impermissable' doesn't mean we should take advantage of it. Divorce isn't impermissable but does it mean people should take advantage of that? As soon as people hear something isn't 'impermissable' their first reaction is well it's not forbidden. Does that mean we should ignore the fact that there must be a reason behind it being 'impermissable ' in the first place? But... and I should have said this before...Allaah Subhana wa Ta'ala knows best

Jazakallah for the insightful lecture. Now based on this, should I feel ok about consuming soy sauces? Organic or non-gmo soy sauces use a natural fermentation process similar to beer and wine. The end result has at least greater than 2% alcohol content, and for some of them the alcohol is added as a preservative. I don't believe I can get intoxicated by consuming large quantities of soy sauce but some companies do ferment longer to achieve "a depth of flavour". So I'm not sure if the intent is innocent? Would love to ask the scholar this question.

@@shaki60 Vanilla extract would be impossible to be consumed to that extent that it intoxicates you. Have you ever tasted raw vanilla extract? You would need 1 whole cup of it to get drunk, and the taste would be horrible. Maybe the Hanafis were right - beverages with small alcohol percentages are not haram. In the Ottoman Empire, muslims used to drink a drink called Boza (fermented corn), which can be made with or without alcohol. They used to lace it with Opium and drink it as a way to calm the nerves. No Boza addicts have ever been reported because the drink is made in such a way that it doesn't make you drunk- it only relaxes you. "Only the dose makes the poison" said Paracelsus.

She is from a 1300 year old Muslim family genetics that did not consume any form of alcohol* *She has a point here: In order to use alcohol to derive vanilla extract someone needs to mass produce alcohol. It cannot be a Muslim. Furthermore it creates an alcohol industry for food makers. She says - NO to any alcohol* Furthermore, vanilla can be used as "Vanilla Beans" to make Icecream". Assalamu alaikum akhi - just because your wife is sensitive to alcohol does not mean that it is haram; it's like a diabetic telling everyone that "sugar is haram because it harms or disorientates me". Nevertheless, your point about the necessity to create an alcoholic business to preserve villa, which effectively won't be made by a Muslim, is not just incorrect but also very ignorant. Firstly, alcohol is not khamr as the shaykh made clear; alcohols are a group of chemicals which consists (and the in the case of ethanol, terminates) of(/with) a hydroxyl group (-OH bond). I'm a chemical engineer and in most of the industries we work in, ethanol has a variety of uses such as: Personal care products in cosmetics and beauty products Hand sanitizers that can bacteria, fungi and viruses Household products like many solvents Food Additives like the vanilla extract the shaykh mentioned Fuel component which increases the octane number in gasoline as well as being used as bio-ethanol Used in medicines and drugs And many more. Yes, ethanol is known for its use in alcoholic beverages, however, it's not the only use in which other uses are necessary components of life. Hope that helps insha'Allah. And Allah SWT knows best.

Firstly balsamic vinegar, the proper real balsamic vinegar, isn't actually made from an alcohol product, like the way wine vinegar is made from wine and cider vinegar is made from [alcoholic] cider. Instead it is made from grape juice, reduced and aged for a long time. It's more or less "syrup of grape juice+age".

The intention is relevant but I would have thought it was applicable to the product that was the medium. The vanilla extract is only for adding a flavour. The wine/vodka/other drink is to drink but can be added to food. In the way the Shaikh stated it, the intention doesn’t make sense since you can argue the flavour is the intention in both cases, the ethanol is just the inert unintentional carrier...??

If you are Shia or Sunni, the narratives are clear that anything with a sinful ingredient becomes unlawful and the unlawful can't be diluted into lawful. Naturally, alcohol is present in ripe fruit and grains. The allowance for delaying drinking beverages that ferment makes clear that root beer and kombucha can be permissible in doses that have lower levels of alcohol to start with. We must remember that the early AlHijra generations did not consider khat and caffeine rich beverages halal.

His reference which he used as the basis for the intoxication is wrong. He is using the whole cake as the reference, while the reference should be the vanilla extract itself. Vanilla extract is 70 proof. He’s claiming that it be OK to consume small amounts of vanilla extract. But he goes on to affirm that whatever intoxicates in large amounts is prohibited in small amounts. 4 to 5 ounces of that would get you intoxicated. That clearly falls under the category of intoxicating in large amounts. And as for the purpose, that arbitrary and irrelevant. Anyone can claim any purpose. I could claim that the purpose for me to take a shot of some liquor is to use it as a digestive aid. Using his logic, taking a small shot of alcohol be permissible. So either it is forbidden or Abu Hanifa’s view is correct. There is no in between. I’m sure if someone were to say that he wants to make a rum flavored cake and sauce wants to add a shot of rum into the mixture, he would claim that this be prohibited. However, it is the same thing as adding a shot of vanilla extract.
