Well, as I black woman, I thought I could at least go for the low-hanging fruit of "don't burn Atlanta"...you know, given that it's celebrated for being black-owned. But the amount of backlash and disdainful vitriol I got was genuinely surprising. I didn't even dare say don't riot (and i mean riot, not protest). Given the push-back I got, I can't even imagine how scared people who are not black must feel. I highly, highly respect you for taking a steadying breath and posting this podcast.

@@nicknomski8399 To be honest, I've been butting heads with the gatekeepers of blackness since I came to this country. Back when I was a kid, I was called an oreo because I loved to read and thus knew big words. Was told my black card was cancelled because I didn't watch BET or listen to much rap. Was told I hated my own men because my first crush was an Asian boy. As an adult, I ran into it when I said I don't like the methods of BLM. I could literally go on all day. I wasn't surprised that I got attacked. I know certain people go after black people who dissent with more fervor. I was surprised that I was attacked for saying don't burn ATALANTA. Atlanta. Where so many things are black owned. What exactly is the goal of the protests when saying don't burn black businesses is met with jeers...from black people?

Im a fan of Sam but he's tone deaf on this one. There is a big problem with policing in this country, it's easier to become a police man then it is to become a barber, which takes over twice as long with twice as much training. It's so easy to become one, many departments are believed to be full of white supremacists. Sam needs to understand this is a hugely systemic problem, and why are there protests, because some of these murders of innocent people of color are absolutely egregious borderlining on cold blooded and at time calculated murder

@@Elcherino123 Hi. Your points are police are under trained and there is a belief that there is a white supremacist presence in the police force. For the first, you and Sam seem to agree entirely. And I think the obvious answer is more and better training. For the second, I think you again agree entirely that there is no room for white supremacy in the police force and there needs to be serious, rational discussion on how to address this and other issues.

There is a problem with policing, and with race and policing. To say it's only a racial issue, and that it is pervasive and defines every facet of policing is not supported by any evidence. I honestly believe law enforcement is the least understood profession in the country, and yet everyone claims to be an expert on it. We already ask too much from our officers, and yet some want them to be social justice and race relations experts. It's a difficult job with too many incapable or underqualified people. but the requirements are too high partially because people have impossible expectations.

The democrats have completely failed the working class in the US. They are the worst performing left party in the western world. No public health care, low minimum wage, no annual leave, no sick pay, no permanent unemployment benefits etc. The US has NONE of the entitlements all other western countries take for granted. It was Democrat failures that lead to the era of identity politics to keep themselves relevant and to get votes from women and minorities.

Is it surprising really? Many people aren't swayed by reason. Do you think cancel culture is an act of reason? Do you think rioting is an act of reason? No, they are acts of emotion and you can never win an argument based on emotion with reason. This is why you can't have a conversation with people that are charged with emotion, you can't win and you will only be a new enemy to them for not agreeing. This is why it's clear we are over the brink in the US, the only end will be a violent uprising or authoritarianism oppression.

There was lots of sense spoken here about policing, but it was not courageous. It's frustrating that Sam completely omits what is surely one of the most (if not the most) important factors in the general underperformance of the group in question, that is low average IQ. There's a lot of big talk here about having "honest conversations" about "relevant causal factors" but he seems so fixated on achieving his race-blind rainbow utopia, that he wants to not deny, but simply avoid reality: that the different performance of groups is because the groups are actually different. There is an incredibly well established link between intelligence and criminality (regardless of race), and the fact that Sam will bring up the legacy of slavery before he will mention IQ differences as a causal factor is very telling. Three years ago he had Charles Murray on and talked frankly about this subject but even in that episode Sam acted as though the only relevance of the science was merely of academic interest and that it was better if the public at large don't know about it. Well what we're dealing with now is what happens when everyone in society has the expectation that every group should be performing equally well, and because the biological reason behind it has been hidden, they are left to conclude that it must be "structural", "institutional", or "systemic" racism. "Courageous" would have been talking about the causal factors that are extremely consequential but taboo, not trotting out the usual CNN talking points of "legacy of slavery".

They were fleeing racial violence, and this was a couple decades after the worst lynching of the 20th century. My father became a communist, the only reasonable reaction to fleeing violent racism in the south only to experience the politically racist ghettoization of NYC. You could talk to him for years and never suspect that. He was hesitant to tell his own children, never explained his beliefs to his wife. Why? Because he never lived in an America where people just agreed to disagree over controversial opinions. You remember a more calm and peaceful world because you were sheltered. All around you people were being oppressed and killed by people for their beliefs or just for existing. The motivations for their subjugation were things you're coddled enough to consider differences of opinion. The people who suffered you considered so less than you forgot they existed. Maybe you never even knew they did. Your bubble has been popped. Your safe space is gone. History is on the march. I’ve tried to explain these things and got death threats, lost friends and had my family begging me not to keep disagreeing with the narrative. Not because they think I am bad & not because they think I’m wrong (and they do because they listen to hours of BBC radio but I can’t get them to listen to 2 hours of Sam Harris), but because they believe I am damaging my reputation irreparably. Risk losing friends, family and work. I’ve also had violent threats sent to my inbox. I wish the media would just do their job.

Like you said, many people are unwilling to consider the evidence when you put it right in front of their faces. This is especially powerful coming from Sam. My guess would be that half or more of his audience believed the fake narrative. Many of them are going to have their heads split wide open from cognitive dissonance when they listen to what Sam is telling them on this subject.

They represent the list of all humans that I’ve ever heard making sense on these issues. AIU and John/Glenn are my go to guys. They generally say the same things but with different styles. AIU being my favorite, since he represents what a whites person armed with the facts would sound like without a shred of white guilt or hesitation of possibly offending someone. He simply treats black people like they are humans who need to be held to the same standards as everyone else is, in a world where holding everyone to account regardless of race is often seen as racism in itself. It’s kind of wild, when you see an actual robust anti-racist and you have to untangle your own racism and ignorance to understand how what they say and do is not racism but is actually affirmative anti-racism.

Once you realize all the things you tell yourself the stories, the fictive scenarios that would make you angry, sad, depressed or anything in between are mostly ways to prolong a specific feeling and that its just not worth it you start to develop a habit of letting go of bad emotions and amplifying good emotions with the self talk of how amazing the world is or something. I mean burning of the Constitution, rewriting our history, radical appropriation of wealth, punishment of privileged whites, and coercive political re-education for all. I do not believe that I have exaggerated at all. It is more speculative to imagine that this revolutionary regime will engage in mass murder of its enemies on the historical scale of revolutionary France, Nazi Germany, the USSR, and Communist China. But just because I don't speculate that this definitely will happen does not mean that I think it is off the table.

"Bravery" is so overused on social media - often to describe expressing extremely popular sentiments that garner many "likes" and "upvotes." What Sam Harris just did with this podcast is true bravery. He expertly articulates the problem with the current "mass delusion" we are experiencing, and does so in an extremely convincing and fact-based way. This episode absolutely needs to be shared far and wide. Both the left and the right in America truly should be able to put aside partisan bickering and unite behind pretty much all of the points made here.

The man in Dallas was not a business owner just an idiot who said he wanted to defend his neighborhood... WIth a MACHETE. There was some sort of conflict because there's a video if him walking away while they throw small rocks at him and then in another video he turns around and chases one protesters swing his machete and missing, the they grab him and best his ass. You know, I love this comment. It is pretty hard to have happen, changing ones mind. Or widen your horizons. It is almost painful at times. It is regardless one of the most liberating things. To experience AND see. So thanks for that. We live in an extremely polarised society, also here in Europe, which has made the 'middle-ground' lay down in a very, very deep chasm. And thus the extreme. It is as fascinating as it is terrying. It is almost like mass-hypnosis, the dancing plague the middle-ages. People need to get a hit intellectually, this podcast is a good starter, to atleast get into rational and or pragmatic mode just a tad bit more. The truth mostly lies somewhere in the middle.

@@aiarta2280 Oh don't worry, I jumped down the rabbit hole and found Jordan Peterson and now I'm just rethinking my entire life haha. I just so respect people being able to actually talk and have these tough conversations. You can't expect to make any kind of lasting change without having an understanding of what is actually going on and what it is that you're trying to change, and that is the fundamental thing missing from so many extreme left wing people, who by all accounts have incredibly well meaning virtues and goals, but the way they pursue them is misguided and naive. The method of "agree with me or you're wrong" is not helping anyone.

I'm right there with you: lifelong Democrat/liberal. Now, I'm at odds with most of my party members and friends over their acceptance of the new trend of suppression of the most basic principals of progressive thinking such as free speech, tolerance, and willingness to participate in discussions about current events. The characteristics liberals used to despise about conservatives have now been wholly adopted like a cult. I'll return to this party when/if it ever resembles what it once was...and honestly, I don't think that'll happen during my lifetime.
