@@sebarsht12 Not joking when I say I had that happen in one playthrough. I gave Wobbuffet a Focus Band that I'd forgotten about because it hadn't done anything, but it finally activated against Sheer Cold and I KOed back with Mirror Coat!

i kept turning back the video because i was puzzled on the "her" pronoun and since i was doing something else while watching i just thought i missed something
And he did it twice, at 54:23 "battle her" and 54:50 "one of her super potions" 😂 I wonder if he actually knows Maxie is a guy or he was just trolling or whatever happened 😂😂

What a wild ride this one was. Minimum battles is such a cool concept, and one of the few things in an RPG with RNG that ends up with a pretty definitive answer.
@@theschnozzler As in, "what is the minimum number of battles you need to beat this game"? Although right now, we don't know yet. We'll have to wait for the Mudkip run to find out.
I did actually try to do this challange myself 2 times in the past. 1 when you released the first minimum battles challange, in that attempt i didn't catch another pokemon and just tried to solo it with Mudkip, i could not get that attempt past Norman tho. My secont i did right after you posted your sapphire run, which i actually was able to complete. Being able to choose 1 pokemon to catch before the tag battle makes this minimum battles run in this game very interesting, since it gives you a bunch of different strats to use. I do agree tho with what you found out here, mudkip is still the only viable starter for this run. The only water types you can get before the first tag battle just aren't good enough to help with the battles the other 2 starters struggle in. None of them are of much help against wattson, which makes Treecko a bust. And i don't think any of them are good enough to be of any good help against tate and lize either Pelliper: could be good, but doesn't get dive or waterfall Seaking: evolves late and has bad stats Tentacruel: Is very weak to tate and liza Lombre: water stone is too late Gyarados: hard to level up but could maybe be useful, but has low sp atk Azumarill: levels up quite quickly and could also maybe be useful, but has low sp atk However if you choose Mudkip i do believe there are quite a few strats that might be viable here. Both strats where you just swap out Mudkip as your main pokemon and ones where you use Mudkip with another pokemon. Nincada: is probably the easiest method. for 1 you get two pokemon to your team with only encounter, and 2 Shedinja breaks the game in half. You don't even need to level it up, you can just PP stall a lot of the problematic pokemon by just swapping back and forwards between Shedinja and another pokemon, then just kill them with toxic when they are out of moves to hit Shedinja. Ralts->Seedot: could also work, you catch Ralts and do the in-game trade to get Dots the Seedot. Since it is an in-game trade, it gets an exp boost, so its easier to level up. it probably won't be of any help early on, but Shiftry is one of the best pokemon against tate and liza and is also very good against Wallace, which are 2 battles that Swamprert will struggle a lot with Oddish: Bellossom helps pretty well with the same battles as Shiftry, It doesn't have the amazing dark typing for the Tate and Liza battle, but in return gets great utility with Sleep Powder Slakoth: This was the strat i used, you are not going to be using Slaking here, beacuse Vigoroth is probably one of the best solo mons in the game. As soon as you beat rival 2, you basically want to focus on leveling up Slakoth to level 18. As soon as it evolves you can teach it bulk up and secret power from the TM and it should already have Encore and slack off. Encore + Bulk Up + Slack Off means you can basically set up on any fight in the game. Right after beating Maxie 1 you can also get your first tm for return by giving the meteorite to the scientist in Fallarbor Town. The only fights that Vigoroth somewhat struggles with is the Flannary fight, since he is still catching up a bit in levels, and the Tate and Liza fight. Tate and Liza is still very difficult. The only way i was able to beat them was to have both Quick Claw Destiny Bond wobbafett, and level Anorith up to level 31 so that it learned protect. The only thing you need to think about after that is to pick up the second return tm at Pacifidlog Town, and teach Earthquake over Return for the Phoebe fight. There might be other strats that might work, but these are at least the main ones i can think of that might work for this minimum battles challenge.
@@theschnozzler Do you remember how you beat the Elite 4 with Swampert? I got that far but stuck with a moveset of Waterfall, Surf, Strength and Rock Smash since I needed them to get through Victory Road. I blanked on the existence of fossils and I didn't even consider catching another pokemon for the double battles. My run thus ended at Glacia.
Important note, Earthquake is useless against Tate&Liza. They all have Levitate (except Xatu, but he, uh... flies. KWAAAH) I totally haven't made that mistake multiple times
@@SoulmongerV2 It'll probably be somewhat different with emerald because of the differing amounts of exp, but have a look at jrose's previous video on ruby. He used Anorith for Rock Smash, so he could give Swampert Brick Break, which took out most of Glacia's team. He then took out the Walrein with destiny bond Wynaut.
I feel like JRose is like an old friend who lives in a city you don't live in anymore: you don't hear from them for a while, but then when you do, it's golden and just like old times
10:50 While you can wait to fight Brawly until after Wattson or Flannery, you do have to fight him before Norman. Winona can be skipped entirely until the end though. You can actually make it all the way through Victory Road and the Wally battle to the Pokémon League before being told you still need more badges, and skipping Winona is the only way to get that unique situation in Emerald.
Another funny thing about this is that the badge check only checks for the Winona badge, not any of the other badges. That is why in the glitched speedrun of emerald where they skip all the gyms after Winona, they are still let through the badge check.
Brawly's Meditate "always" goes for Focus Punch because Smart AI sees a KO opportunity so that becomes priority even over status moves (there are be exceptions, such as Self-Destruct/Explosion, as becomes relevant vs Wattson). With Pure Power and a 150 STAB attack this early in the game, it is probably a clean OHKO against most mons the player will have at this point in the game. Also FP is its only attacking move (the others are Light Screen, Reflect, Bulk Up).
A big factor in gen 3 double battles removed in gen 4 and beyond is when a pokemon is KOed, the switch in is hit by any move is the previous one was targeted. Later It changes to the opponent’s follow up targeting move not hitting anything BEFORE the next pokemon is switched in. The only time the opponent’s follow up attack can hit the other pokemon you have is if its the last pokemon you have. The gen 3 double battle mechanic is what makes Tate and Liza difficult for challenges like this. Even with multiple pokemon, they are to weak and are lined up to get knocked out.
I like seeing the failures and the successes. The failures drive home that this is an actual _challenge_ and not just a mundane chore. You struggled really hard and applied some clever strategies, but ultimately you were out-muscled. Hopefully you can find some clever trick that gets you past Tater&Liesalot.
Castform and Wobbuffet are in the same egg group so if you manage to have a male Castform and female Wobbuffet you could breed other Wobbuffet (no extra battle !) and have other chances of Destiny Bond against Tate & Liza !
@@ShinyTillDawnit should be a rule that the pokemon you put in the daycare can never be used again, but whatever eggs come out of it should be allowed
I would love to see a TAS guru put their mind to this, no glitches, but using rng manipulation to get perfect pokemon, perfect damage rolls, crits where they are needed etc, to see if the Treeko run is possible.
Definitely possible. Critting every hit probably does it already honestly. Perfect IVs and also Pickup RNG for more Rare Candy would make it a cakewalk. Now that I think about it Pickup RNG is probably the next best thing after perfect crits and ranges. Starting from level 21 you can roll Rare Candy, which is probably very achievable. An added bonus is Zigzagoon/Linoone can learn a couple of HMs.
That's not a challenge for TAS. All you need is to get a single Flash or Swagger off and the rest is free. Of course it is possible, just the amout of luck you need is only feasible in a TAS
really enjoyed this. you show the whole process with trial and error to develop new strategies. many people skip over this when making videos but I think it's the most interesting part.
My guess is that Mudkip and Tailow would actually work really well together for minimum battles. As tailow has access to guts it being hit with a status effect while having facade isn't the worst thing. If this was Gen 6 you could even do stuff like flame orb or something.
while i think tailow and mudkip would work well together, i personally think that the getting pre statused wouldn’t really be in the spirit of a minimum battle run
@@quinncrypt_media You probably could, but it wouldn't last that long because you'd need to waste a single trainer and not use the pokecenter in between that. i actually think it's in the spirit of the run
@ghosty cryptid ! there's a few instances where it can work out you just reset until you get a status effect. The trainers right before Rival 2 can paralyze and I believe there are a few others from what I could already see that would work in theory.
I did this in Scarlet and Violet and it seems like there's 63 required battles, or 45 required trainer battles. Before the storylines: 6 Battles, 5 Trainer Battles (Nemona 1, Houndoom, Arven 1, Nemona 2, and 2 Team Star grunnts) Path of Legends: 12 Battles, 1 Trainer Battle (Klawf twice, Bombirdier twice, Orthwork twice, Iron Treads twice, Dondozo twice, Tatsugiri, and Arven 2) Starfall Street: 12 Battles, 12 Trainer Battles (Team Star Grunt, Giacomo, Team Star Grunt, Mela, Youssef, Atticus, Harrington, Ortega, Carmen, Eri, Clavell, and Penny) Gym Challenge: 25 Battles, 25 Trainer Battles (Katy, Brassius, Nemona 3, 2 Levincia Gym Trainers, Iono, 1 Cascarrafa Gym Trainer, Kofu, Larry, Nemona 4, 3 Montenevera Gym Trainers, Ryme, Nemona 5, 2 Alfornada Gym Trainers, Tulip, Grusha, Rika, Poppy, Larry, Hassel, Geeta, and Nemona 6) The Way Home: 8 Battles, 2 Trainer Battles (Glimmora, Iron Bundle, Iron Treads twice, Iron Hands, Iron Jgulis, AI Turo, and Paradise Protection Protocol) Total: 63 Battles, 45 Trainer Battles

Lol yep it's the only one that could make this happen which is nuts. You could even catch a mightyena as your necessary catch to help with ghost and psychic types
Is it actually going to be used much in battle though? What he might end up doing is mostly use just Mudkip as a HM slave, because it allows him to use whatever Pokémon he wants as the second Pokémon for double battles. We'll have to see.
@@IamGrimalkinthere's actually not a single pokemon better than mudkip before mauville. And even after mauville there's very few. RSE were really built around mudkip for some reason
@Jrose remember you don't have to use mudkip, you have to choose it for dive/waterfall but you can use any other pokemon from the first routes as your main pokemon, like Ralts/Taillow/Slakoth/aron for example :) It would be a lot more fun since you already used mudkip for ruby/sapphire.
I tried that, but the problem is the pokemon you get before mauville are so stupidly weak they are not even worth using. ralts is gonna suck big time before gardevoir, so it's not worth it. Swellow is not half bad, especially with guts, but that's hard to maintain and still not as worth as swampert, vigoroth and slaking are definitely not as good as swampert, for stats/ability reasons. The traded seedot looks good on paper, but it's so bad until you get it to be shiftry so, again, stick with mudkip. Mawile, Aron and sableye are all bad, sorry. Crobat would be a very interesting one, unfortunately it's not gonna be any good before level 22, and wallace absolutely decimates this poor guy. Linoone is definitely worse than mudkip. Manectric is not even worth discussing. Neither Plusle or Minun. And Exploud could actually be useful, but jus tlike with swellow, it would be situational and still worse than swampert. Unfortunately, RSE were really made around mudkip for some reason
It looks like this is a "mandatory battles" challenge, I guess if you can add extra battles it can make-up. Thanks for your content. And, at Watson's part I already knew Mudkip was the (best/only) way. Take care and thanks again Jrose. :)
I'm just happy that u are financially independant enough that you don't have to upload so frequently.. Your videos were so helpful during lock down, I wish you the best of luck
I do still think Blaziken is possible, if you had held on to Fake Out on Ludicolo (well, Lombre) that would've helped against T&L, and Wobbuffet must be close to living a Psychic and potentially getting a Mirror Coat off (so Mirror Coat + Destiny Bond on one slot would be one potential strategy). One other note is that splitting Exp between two mons is definitely not ideal. Unless your plan is to use Lombre in the long haul (in which case you should probably only be giving it Exp, not Combusken), it's about as useful at level 15 with Fake Out as it is at level 32 with Ice Beam or w.e. A few extra levels on Blaziken would've been super helpful at the end there. I also think Treecko probably is actually easier than Blaziken but requires more finesse in the early game to get by Rival 2. Treecko has a much better matchup vs. Wattson and only Flannery is really a huge concern. I wonder if there is any way to use Marill or Lotad to help with this fight more, but would have to think about it more and am not an expert by any means. Still, great video as always, and 100% agreed that Mudkip is the best choice so look forward to that one. Should definitely be doable and less frustrating than these two are.
Irrelevant, but your challenge runs of Red and Blue have inspired me to actually play Pokemon Red on my 3DS’s virtual console (got it before E-Shop shut down) and I even named my Kadabra after you (specifically naming them Rose)
@@joshuapoland575 It was Minimum Battles. He said in the previous RS video that future games require teaching your Pokémon more HMs, that you got less gift Pokémon... So that it would be difficult to implement minimum battles going forward.
i love that you can double battle two unrelated trainers from emerald onwards but it really is kinda psychotic "hey i have no clue who you are but there is this random child here llts force him to battle both of us at the same time"
***(Spoiler Alert)*** I appreciate you occasionally posting videos where the answer to "Is (whatever) possible?" is sometimes "No, it isn't" instead of all of your videos being constant success stories. To me, that makes this channel much more relatable as we all sometimes fail, whether it's from a chat challenge, personal challenge, etc. and we should talk about and display those failures as well. Keep up the good content, Jrose and AJ! I look forward to every video!

I really enjoy how every so often, you mix in an unexpected result like this! Awesome cliffhanger, looking forward to the follow-up! ...also Maxie is a guy not a girl 😆
Leppa Berry + Dig is an alternative for Norman, especially if you can get a defense drop with Rock Smash. Navigating his team without Quick Claw is definitely challenging.
In your next video, get a ralts and a mudkip. If you can somehow get ralts to gardevoir and level 38 on minimum battles, gardevoir learns imprison and already knows psychic and calm mind. If you put gardevoir first in your party in the tate and liza battle, it'll trace levitate and can only be hit by confuse Ray, hypnosis, solarbeam, and flamethrower and tate and liza can't use psychic and calm mind on ANY of her pokemon
"I don't wanna play this for three years" Funny thing about that is there is a pokemon streamer/RU-vidr currently who has been doing a black and white hardcore nuzlocke run where his chat can KO mons by joining a channel membership and it just seems torturous on him lol he's had to do several breaks That's just what that reminded me of
Very nice to see you back ! Also, did you consider going with Torchic + Marill, instead of Torchic + Lotad, considering that Lotad can't become a Ludicolo soon enough ? Maybe it wouldn't made a very big difference, but Azumarill is probably better than Lombre, and more suited to fight the fire / flying / psychic gyms tbh.
Welcome back Jrose! Crazy timing I literally looked like an hour ago if you’d posted and shortly after here it is! Hope you’re doing okay mentally and are back firing for us all, looking forward to watching now!
I love your style of video making. Including all of the failures and your theory crafting is great. It always feels like we're really just on the journey with you. I've watched a lot of solo challenges including some Pokemon emerald from Scott's thoughts. But your style of video is unique to you and I love it
For the mudkip run, I think that guts Taillow is worth considering as your one early game catch. It would sweep Brawly, and Marshtomp should be useful against Brawly and Flannery. Norman would be tough but if you can figure him out, guts+silk scarf facade strats on Swellow would be very strong for the rest of the game
can confirm guts + facade swellow very strong, carried me to the champion on an extremely underleveled team where I totally didn't get stuck on the champion after a dumb save

The thing about Norman's Spinda's Tether Dance is that it looks like it targets the Trainer rather than the Pokemon hence why it can r repeat the move. It might be the same for other confusion inducing moves like Supersonic.
Hey if you're sweating the fact that this run failed, just want to say I enjoyed this just as much as the runs that go well. It really makes me feel like the successes are more "real" because you take these challenges so seriously. Keep em coming
Return of the king 👑 Glad to see you’re back! I hope you’re doing well and not pushing it too hard just because you feel obligated. You have such a great library of content already.
I thought of it as well and I can't imagine Jrose didn't. It was probably either too unreliable due to not having 100% accuracy (if it misses once on Meditite the battle is over), or just doesn't do enough damage, even at the maximum power of 160 (which is effectively 80 against Makuhita since fighting resists it).
Phenomenal run man, love this series and was glad you were convinced to try something new with the starter choice. Mudkip runs are everywhere but if it means redemption I’m excited to see it
Hey Jrose! I just wanted to say there's a really easy manipulation you can do to beat the Tate and Liza fight. The Emerald AI will always go for kill against a low- HP pokemon, so if you pre damage your other pokemon that aren't lombre, and spam protect, it'll give you lots of free turns to spam surf. Claydol can still go for earthquake, but you resist it. If you give castform a quick claw, you can also get a priority rain dance up to help boost the surf damage! I totally think this fight is possible, but you'd probably need to get pretty lucky with double protects.
You have no idea how happy I am to see this, this is my favorite series on your channel and it couldnt have come at a better time..thank you for all the work you put in for your fans, Jrose
Firstly the editing and narration on this is next level. It's always been good but that was excellent. Great to see you back JRose. What a video!!! That finish is so well thought out by you!
