Can you fly with just an iPad (and no paper?)

Ditching paper in the cockpit and flying just with an iPad on today's flight from Biggin Hill to Wick in Scotland. Flying a Cirrus SR20 over England, through cloud, taking clearances and weather updates, and talking about flying just with an iPad. I'm a Private Pilot, flying around Europe for three weeks, and usually use a kneeboard with paper and pencil. Today I wanted to just use an iPad Mini for notes and clearances and enter frequencies and codes directly into the aircraft rather than writing them down each time.

Lovely stuff again Stef!! Paperless is great the Greens will love you! I am always amazed on commercial flights when prior to take off your hear from the cockpit "we will be pushing back shortly...just waiting for the last paperwork to come through " and then a guy in a safety vest comes on board with the paperwork ( the load sheet !!) and gives it to the tech crew!! Can't wait for the flying comediennes to get back amongst those clouds!! Well done mate!!

I like your videos. Fun to watch. One thing I'd like to request. Show a screen of your flight plan to let us know where you are flying to. In this video it was almost shown. But, it was about the next leg, not really this leg. Well, that suggestion is for the next "tour" you do. Thanks for the show!

Yep -I've done the same. Bought all the paper stuff ($900.00+) for the IREX, but now that that's done and dusted (plus the Instrument Rating!!!), I'm going EFB-only. Backup is the iPhone. Nothing funnier than when you get tongue tied and you are trying to remember a clearance though, Sometimes I wish we (heli pilots) had an easy way to write them down.

Do you think it is weird that CASA is still making us use paper maps, with nothing in the syllabus ensuring we know how to use EFBs? When most pilots when they finish there PPL/CPL will go straight to an EFB I am still a fan of knowing how to read and use a map, as they never run out of battery. But I also use an EFB

Just Googled Adonit Pixel as I'd not heard of that - looks impressive. Do you use one, any other thoughts? It might be something I get for my existing iPad Mini 4 and if I upgrade to a Mini 5 soon too. Pretty good price and I like how it looks, a little chunkier than the Apple Pencil.
@chadpollman7970
@chadpollman7970 5 лет назад
@Stefan Just an FYI: I understand the iPad Mini 4 doesn’t support the Apple Pencil. The iPad Mini 5 supports the 1st gen Apple Pencil.
@Chrisamic
@Chrisamic 5 лет назад
I absolutely hate apple, and things like the apple pencil not even working with the mini 4 is just one of the many reasons. Aviators are between a rock and hard place though - many of the best aviation apps are produced for only Apple products. I guess for many aviators the cost of Ipads is relatively insignificant when compared to many other avionics options. For those of us on the budget end of aviation, Apple's pricing for just average electronics and the lack of right to repair (apple actively work to prevent third party repair) make it a deal breaker. I completely understand the inclination for many pilots to buy into the Apple replace/upgrade cycle however.
@delicatessen5670
@delicatessen5670 5 лет назад
@@StefanDrury I picked up a Logitech Crayon. About the same price but I think if I could go back I would've chosen the Pixel or any one of the other Adonit variants. Chad is correct tho, they only started supporting pen use with the Mini in the model 5.

I'm not a pilot but I've been toying with the idea of getting a pilot's license. One of the things that make it appear like a daunting task is when I watch most RU-vid vids regarding piloting airplanes I see you guys having to write down with pencil and note pad all of the traffic controllers remarks addressed at a particular pilot/airplane. My penmanship sucks and my ability to write in short-hand is non-existent. To that end I've wondered as I've watched these piloting videos, why don't pilots incorporate the same technology that's available on many cell phone and I-pads? The one that you can speak into and it automatically converts your speech into written words. This way you don't have to write anything down because the technology I'm referring to automatically transcribes and records the traffic controller's words onto your I-Pad or other digital device without you having to write it down. I know that with this kind of tech stuff there's always a chance of errors but one would think that by now as long as this technology has been around it should be reliable enough to at least mitigate some of the mental load of having to manually write it down and then try to read what you've just hurriedly scribbled down. Do you think this would work?? If it will it sure would alleviate one of my concerns about getting a pilots license.
@liamwilson9490
@liamwilson9490 5 лет назад
TIM MONTANO that’s an interesting idea! I’ve never heard of it before but who knows, it could be a thing one day. But generally, writing everything down is the norm. While you might be put off by the amount of note taking, pilots will usually have a pretty good idea of what air traffic controllers are going to say. Air traffic controllers give instructions in specific orders which pilots are able to memorise so it becomes pretty easy to remember what they’ve said. I barely write anything down as I’m able to remember most things, I’m sure this is something you would be able to do with a bit of time in the aeroplane. Don’t let anything put you off, you can do it!!
@MrTjmk
@MrTjmk 5 лет назад
Thanks. I appreciate your reply. Perhaps by the time I bite the bullet and start taking flying lessons technology will have advanced enough to where the manufactures that come up with avionic gadgetry will have already integrated the tech I alluded to into their existing avionics. That would be awesome and would take flying airplanes one step closer to allowing tech-retarded people like myself to jump right in. @@liamwilson9490

Although you've stated that you are using an iPad now, what is the specific reason for wanting to go paperless? You haven't addressed that in the video, and I would love to hear your opinion on it! :)
@StefanDrury
@StefanDrury 5 лет назад
Hey Luca, yeah I touched on that briefly in the introduction, but basically I want to get faster at readbacks and more accurate with data entry. By entering the data straight into the avionics I'm not spending additional time writing it down, entering it, then reading it back. Also, and yeah I didn't actually touch on this in the video, but it avoids double handling the data (writing down, THEN entering into the avionics) which is prone to more data entry error, and means I have a tidier cockpit area - I always had the iPad and kneeboard, now it's just the iPad).
