Can You Light A Fire With A Shotgun Cartridge?

Do not attempt to try this at home as could cause serious harm. I no way do I condone this use of gunpowder and cannot really envisage a situation that might warrant it unless in the most desperate survival situations.
I wanted to try this little experiment to see if it would work as i knew it could in theory and wanted to try it out.

Love the joy in your response to it working "just like in the movies"! The difference a little pond makes, I was taking bullets apart when I was 10. Like John L. you spill out a little powder from a .22 light it and aim the bulletless cartridge at your target.BANG! Might just have to do a vid on that.Thank for posting, worked great to start the fire.

Hmmmm .. you lit the fire with a flint ... not with shotgun shell.

What my question was is can you take the empty hull with the live primer and fire it in the shotgun to use as a spark generator to ignite the gunpowder on the ground?

Look at the difference in shot size in that cartridge, Is it too much to ask for if we would like what's written on the box to be inside the box, Haaaaaaaaa I'm bleeding from my eyes again. Good vids mate.

I used to take apart my father's rifle cartridges, pull out the bullet, spill out a little gunpowder, light, and the biggest baddest 12 inch blue-white flame, and a screaming whistle noise, ... then the cap banging out, like the self-same rifle shot. Yes, in a very hard survival situation, bullets or cartridges can be used for fire making with a very intense heat, much like a small propane torch. But in no way is this a firemaking toy. This is survival, not play. It is dangerous.

John Lord yeah, exactly - I can't really envisage a situation where it would be required - especially as if someone had cartridges on them, one would assume that they would have a lot more gear about their person. I've seen it written about in various publications and never thought it would be required, but it works.

Wild Jim Original Just that statement of hunters, hikers/campers/fishermen with pistols, getting lost and getting into trouble and a survival situation. Same for driving out into the desert, or driving in a snow storm or rain storm of a forest, and you have this available. Not everybody carries an EDC bag in car/truck, or backpack at any and all times. So this insight can save a life, and it might be your own when disaster happens.

John Lord True - hadn't thought of it like that, I guess because gun laws are so strict here in the UK it would be more of an abnormal situation for us, but at least now I know I will make it! haha

If you can't hunt a fox, pheasant, duck, goose, or roebuck, then at least you can have a safe and warm camp fire, with a bottle of scotch, and a warm hunting dog.
