Hey Alex, thanks for the videos! We're a couple in our 40/50s and living as perm residents in SMA. I am finding it pretty hard to make social connections here in our age group, and there's a few other things we're not super happy with here, including the cost of living, so we're planning a move. Got some video ideas for you! - We've been to GDL 4 times pre-pandemic and really liked it, and I'm going to start making trips there to seriously looking at colonias there to potentially re-locate to. What about nightlife there for people who are Not into clubbing, or the super loud music places? Pubs, and similar social environments, Sports bars, craft beer places ect? And good places for someone who is not yet fluent in Spanish, but working on it. - Also I'd love to see neighborhood specific videos, breaking down what they have to offer, and for what kind of budget on housing both rent and to buy, problems they face (flooding, internet, safety etc?), and what the overall vibe is/people in that area. - We don't have a car and we do have a large dog who needs plenty of walks, any idea on the best Dog friendly areas with parks we can walk her in? Availability of pet services like doggy daycare, vets, etc? - Relocation services that can help people like us expidite home searches and help with things like CFE hook ups etc? Thanks!!

I also live in GDL. Own my home and late model SUV, both paid for. I live well but in no way luxury, and eat 98% of my meals at home. I have a top tier health insurance plan and full coverage auto insurance. For the 1st 5 months of 2022. my expenses are averaging $35,500 mxn per month. In 2021 my expenses averaged $36,000 mxn per month. That’s for one person and 2 (spoiled)dogs. To spend only $20,000 ($1000 usd) I’d need to get rid of my car (never gonna happen), auto insurance and health insurance. For most people coming from North of the border, I think that $20,000 mxn per month is possible, but only if you have a partner to split costs and even then, you’d be tight if the unexpected happened.

Great informative video once again. Living comfortably in Mexico is very subjective. Thanks for breaking it down in USD. We have been living in Guanajuato for eleven months. Being a university and tourist town this is not the cheapest place to rent in Mexico but we love it here. Our all in budget is around $1500 USD and we live better here then when we were living in the states.

My monthly expenses in USD are as follows... $375 - rent, including electricity, water, gas, internet. $12 - cell phone $87 - health care (IMSS) $30 - all expenses to operate a moto scooter (transportation) $330 - food $ 6 - drinking water $100 - entertainment $60 - miscellaneous $1,000 TOTAL

So what I’ve been learning is that the cost of living is similar to most of my expenses in the US for two people, except for internet. It is way to expensive and slow in our corner of the US. Have you noticed the affects of inflation recently? What we are looking for is quality of life in retirement. I miss urban life with shops, fresh markets, cafes/bars, art, music and even public transportation. My hubby loves soccer, especially Bundesliga. So wifi is a must for him. It’s interesting to see what expenses are important to people and how they live. Keep posting.

Very informative video, Alex, but like all big cities in the world it can be very dangerous. My former fiancée and I were sitting in Centro around six o'clock eating ice cream when she noticed a guy lurking around. She immediately panicked and said we had to get a taxi and get out of there right away. You know that Maddie also had her phone stolen out of her hand recently and she's moving now. As much as I loved Mexico and hated to leave, the new income requirements, which have doubled, make it impossible to come back. Add no affordable healthcare for someone as old as me and Mexico is just a dream.

It's funny non of the bloggers ever answer this question. I have sense researched as I am Moving in September. I have worked remotely in the US sense before Covid. What I found like one I'm on now which is a financial w2 position and those do not allow you to log in outside the states unless for a "specific" assignment. There are also a few US companies. Most that live overseas are self employed US workers. Try of ways to monitize what you do. For example if your in IT, look to market your skills to contract and you pay your US taxes for the income made as its done online and based out of US with us taxes giving you the ability to be anywhere. I make jewelry and plan to do some day trading, and i started to save a to prepare before I go. I'm not rich, nor do I have tons of savings. Like they shared, the quality of life is worth it. Sure, I make good morning here, but I'm literally living to work and work to live. I'm just done with that mentality

@rayvogensen2983

You forgot the biggest expense, which is rent. In an answer to the question, of course you can, but it depends on how you live, where you live, and with whom you live (are you sharing rent or living alone?). Of course, the adjective "comfortably" can change the situation. The vast majority of Mexicans live on a lot less than one thousand dollars a month. Whether they live "comfortably" or not depends on how you define the word.

Hello Alex! OMG! The ending just cracked me up. So that is 1K USD per person, excluding rent? (asking because it was not mentioned). Also because items like groceries are for a couple vs a single person. Last year I (Sept.-Oct) I was in Mexico (CDMX and Mérida, mostly) and I am planning to go to CDMX and probably GDL in November for a month. I didn't find the inflation that noticeable from my previous trip back in March 2020. Are things much more expensive this year? Inflation in Canada has been brutal.

I've watched this video twice, but now it's not really relevant to inflated prices. I think you could still live on $1,000 US in Guadalajara if you gave up some of your luxuries, eating out and partying, but I think in today's dollars, it's going to be at least $1500 to live your lifestyle. However, for me, as a senior who is not too particular about which neighborhood she lives in as long as it's safe, who doesn't get her nails and hair done, go to a gym, or party and mostly eats at home, I could probably still do it on $1,000.

If you can speak Spanish - this may be doable. Rent is the most costly thing in the budget by far. A frugal single elderly retired male needing health insurance may be hard pressed to get by on $1000 every month. > "_____ happens" - ya know ! --?-- The Government has made Mexico an un-affordable country for most expats ! - Financial requirements are ridiculous given the average Mexican's wages and the actual cost of living ? --- Unless they change these ludicrous requirements the Mexican people will lose a lot of tourist dollars.

You can live comfortably. The city rent is raising on the nicer, newer buildings with security in the good areas (1 bedroom in the new buildings range from 15,000-20,000 pesos per month). Luckily food + utilities are still reasonable and cheap. If you like to drink and eat out (its hard not to eat out in GDL because there are sooooo many amazing restaurants) you would have to budget but it can definitely be done.

It depends, Mexico is working on controlling inflation on food, gas, and electricity. Mexico is not a poor country although there is poverty. If you live in Interlomas, Chapultepec, Santa Fe Mexico City you need to be a rich person that not even German Americans can afford. Monterrey is an expensive city you need at least 40,000 dollars a year or more to make ends meet or even more. Guadalajara is a wealthy city and it depends as well. What is happening is Mexico is receiving poor immigrants from Canada or the U.S. because they can't live in their country. Most Anglo RU-vidrs present themselves as wealthy, but they are not.

I buy eggs, meats, chicken from an organic farmer and fish from a local vendor on saturdays slow food market in merida and fresh coconut water and Chiapas coffee (reg & decaf) from the natural health store. As a result, I spend more on food items, as I don't enjoy uber - ing to the grocery store more than once a week. My neighborhood allows me to enjoy time at cafes nearby as well as for internet access when I lose my connection from time to time. My rent is $500 for a 2 bedroom including utilities except electricity (20 dollars per month). I spend btw 900 and 1k per month all together.
