Several people have asked about the cost of living in Spain. If your a couple I would say its possible on around 1000 to 1200 euros a month. Below that and your going to struggle. Help us caption & translate this video! amara.org/v/G51q/
No 👎🏼 We tried and with one bedroom apartment in Madrid at 650€ a year later the rents went up, the old car needs repair, my hair color, some medications and we got very tight. Thanks God we got a pay raise and job transfer to Castilla León and found a nice two bedroom, two bath, garage, storage and terraza apartment for 300€.
+Alvaro Crespo Agree as the bigger areas can be expensive e.g. Madrid, Barcelona where apartment rentals can be 3 x the amount for what we pay in La Mata.
Hi Matt, thanks for all the information given. It is really helpful since I have in mind to move over from UK. My daughter is in year 7 so I am a little more concern about her schooling. Since she will have to study in Spanish she loses her Eglish skills that she has to learn. What is your opinion on that issue and how did you chose the place where you moved? Did anyone tell you about it, price, better living conditions , what? That is my dilema, where would be the best place to settle. Thanks
+Ratacit Prinlume Hi, my kids are multi lingual and so are most of the kids we know. They won't lose English as long as it's regularly spoken. In the same way I speak English and my wife speaks Bisaya to the kids while at school it's Spanish. So not an issue with the languages. Location wise have friends and family that lived in the area before I visited. But after visiting could see it was very family friendly and safe.
I just hv a question, how much it can cost me if I want to study high school there?,of cource including living and eating all life sources,is 700 euros enough for that?
for the school meals, kids can just bring their own food or buy sandwich for 1€ ( if you are in a public school) and its also free school transportation in public aswell as if you live far and kids take buses or other transportation, goverment gives back the money that they spend.
+misscretin The cities are always going to be much higher, but we are near Torrevieja and generally along the coast in this area the prices are all around the same. Inland even cheaper.
Matt please can you tell me if there is any American bank in Barcelona ? My fiance living there she from Philippines I want to use a American bank to get my early pension. Right now I'm living in Hawaii Honolulu.

You can live in Spain on €1000 per month ...if you are a single and live like a church mouse...if you are a couple you would struggle to live on € 1200. The only things that are cheaper in Spain ...up against the UK are cigarettes and none branded alcohol ...food is approximately the same price in supermarkets.
im thinking of buying in Quesada matt can you tell me any reliable agents? or do you know anything about the property market yourself, or is there any nicer areas that you know of,you seem quite clued up.cheers mate
Yes can give you a couple of agents to speak to. Drop me an email at matt|@expatservices.es depends on the type of area you like as I like La Mata but there are a lot of different developments nearby. Some more urbanised, coastal and town.
Hello Matt, I love your real down to earth videos ! We are looking to move out to Costa Blanca (Murcia region) sooner rather than later, fingers crossed !!! depends on the sale of our property ! We are looking to rent, and would rather be in location ideally to view any potential rentals...So !!!! have you any views on how to obtain accommodation for a limited time whilst we find our rental property. Thanks Melissa
Hi Melissa, glad your enjoying the videos. Best advice is rent out of holiday season and get a 6 month contract if possible. Some people are negotiable as long as they know 6 months is 6 months (so will reduce from a year). Make sure you get a contract as you will need it for getting your Residency documents sorted and ideally do everything with bank transfers (shows a record). This week we are in the middle of forming a new website and business venture with a lawyer. So a lot of the services people require we are looking to do at reasonable rates. I am shocked at some of the prices people charge as they are exploiting the elderly (the majority of people are 65+). But also we want to help with the day to day headaches of life e.g. trying to change providers for internet/electric etc. which can be a nightmare for a none native Spanish speaker. We already cover services like investigation on properties for debt and ownership as well as right to sale.
Great to hear back from you Matt, and I really appreciate your advice. I look forward to hearing your progress on your new venture, you will do well because you're tenacious ! My husband works for the Police and is more than fed up !!! He's fantastic at websites, it's his hobby but wants to focus on it in Spain, so if you need any help, give us a shout because he's fab :) bless you and thank you, will keep in touch. Melissa.
There is no need of investigation on properties for debt and ownership in Spain because it exists a property registration office that guarantees you that what they publish is the legal truth. You only have to ask for a "nota simple" and you can check the legal situation of a property.
That is not true. I assume you are referring to a Notaria. All they do is witness the transactions, they do not check the legal status of anything. A nota simple is merely a statement of the property at a given point in time and does not give legal rights. You need a full escritura and a Lawyer.
1000 Euros (close to $1000 US) a month in Spain? Are you kidding? I would think that'd be difficult to do even in the Philippines for Americans or Europeans even after the recent slight strengthening of the dollar.
I am looking to move to Spain in about 4 years. We will have around €450000. I will be 60 then ( if I live that long lol ) do you think we could have a decent life there.
Easily but it depends on what lifestyle you are looking for. One of the issues around immigration as well is they like regular income to meet the criteria.
450000€ divided 40 years (sure you will live 100) are 11250€ per year i.e. 937,50€ per mounth (and you did not even mention 1€ of future pension. Is it possible?). You will have a "decent" life, belive me!
Impossible to be 20 as they charge a minimal fee even if empty. Are you sure you didn't mix it up with the savings related to electric water heater being put on a timer.
Where are you living? Because your "absolute stupidity" you would have to account for the amount of people here on UK pensions that are well under €1000
Andalucia, 30 years being self employed, 30 years paying social security & never missed a payment, 30 years of paying tax to the Agencia Tributaria. Now we've got the boring stuff out of the way lets look at reality. Please, no one take this advice on board, I've seen so many people come here thinking life is easy and cheap, most people I've known in my time here all go home through lack of money, so lets take of these rose tinted glasses and look at reality, this advice is free. If you want to live in a field eating grass and live like a cow, then come here with your 500euros each per month and live with the misery, stress and poverty that awaits you, foolish is the man who doesn't sit down and calculate the real costs, not some fantasy portrayed on a you tube channel, if someone wants a reality check then please feel free to ask and I will provide you with the facts about the costs of living in Spain, ask a professional with 30 years experience of how much things really cost. Forget coming here thinking you can live of 500euros each per month, this is Spain 2016 not Spain 1988.
For a start its 1000 euros not 500 and the local wages in this area are around 750 for most local people. The majority of people in this area long-term are on pensions that are around 1000 euros as a couple. IF you are only earning 1000 euros self employed you aren't earning well and quite simply shouldn't be self-employed financially doesn't make any sense. But also you would either have a business that doesn't pay well or you are under charging.
You say a 'couple' that's not singular, a couple living on a 1000 per month is two people. Sorry, but I'm wasting my time with you, I'm married to a Spaniard I know exactly how much they earn here as I deal with Spanish all over Spain. Please don't advise struggling pensioners they can live of 1000€ per month as you'll make their lives a misery and stressful. I know all about business in Spain and how much you need to earn as I am an importer/distributor.
