About Me
“The world needs more makers.” ~ RoyerX
Being from a family of creatives whose motto was to produce not to consume was etched into Kyle from a very early age and being educated at home gave him many opportunities to work hard at his own creative pursuits.
At eighteen, Kyle graduated high school and two weeks later received his Journeyman Smith Stamp and a rare double win of the George Peck Award and Bill Moran Award, “the 18-year-old prodigy”, “the blazing bladesmith” was what BLADE Magazine labeled him. Following that victory in November, 2009 BLADE Magazine ran a special five page spread “That Young and That Good”, the article went on to say “His ability to masterfully execute new designs, processes and artistic damascus patterns is remarkable. In spite of his young age, his fit/finish and attention to detail is representative of some of todays most known and sought after makers.” He was one of two to achieve Mastersmith by the age of twenty. His knives and his skills are highly sought after worldwide.
In the early years, if you weren’t at a knife show or a hammer-in, learning from the masters, information was hard to find, there was no online content and only a few books and videos, so it was a lot of trial and error in the knife shop. Kyle is passionate to teach makers his more than fourteen years of experience.
“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” We hope we can inspire you on your maker’s journey.
Thanks for watching
Enjoy!

I have been very interested in forging for about a year now and a friend and I finally built a forge together so we can start making some knives. I want to make sure that we can get a good heat treat and I was curious what brand of infrared thermometer you use?
@KyleRoyerKnives
@KyleRoyerKnives 4 года назад
Hey my friend. You guys rock. Don’t overcomplicate anything Dave. Sounds like you got it going on. Start start start!!! Pyrometer is going to trump a infrared thermometer . Learning the proper color by eye is helpful. Make sure there’s not much light when checking color. Full sun outside will give a false positive 👍🏻🔥☕️⚔️. Keep up the good work Dave. Reach out to your local community on your knife making journey. It’s more fun to go together. Give a shout out if we can help. We will all be at Blade August 7-9. Keep Forging On. Dad

I make knives and daggers from files by grinding the profile without the forging and heat-treating steps, which results in a knife or dagger possessing the same hardness of the original file. Given the hardness involved, what kind of honing tools should I use to sharpen my projects?
@KyleRoyerKnives
@KyleRoyerKnives 4 года назад
Hey my friend, cool intel. Be certain to match the temper(Rockwell hardness)with the intent of the knife . After hand sanding the blade to 600 grit or beyond, I may start edge sharpening with a 180 wet stone, then 350, 1000, finally 3000 king wet stone. Then leather strope, last several passes over a stroping rod . Keep Making mrtadreamer Be careful and be safe. Dad

Hey Gustav great question. It will slightly stress the steel,like welding does but it didn’t get nearly hot enough to harm temper. You can see in the vid that I wrapped the blade in a wet cloth. And when we were performance testing I actually tried to break the blade. I couldn’t. Remember it was just a quick fun 12 hour build 👍🏻🔥🤙🏻🤪 Good to have you here hanging out with us all . Dad

I like the dagger in this video, but I prefer to grind away all traces of a files original cutting surface to get a completly smooth workpiece. Is there a way a could post and share a photo of one of my finished daggers for Kyle to see?

Really like the blade... the guard and handle though, sorry not a fan of it. I see what you were going for but Fairbairn Sykes style handle with a smaller guard I think would suit the blades better. Still great work though.

Im trying something like this myself at the moment, i only have an angle grinder and no way of heat treating so im just going slowly so as not to get the file hot

Fantastic video and knife, as usual. A PSA though. When I started making knives my mentor very vigorously kept it in my head that all naturally red woods are carcinogenic and to always wear a respirator when working them. Not being preachy, just trying to look for yas!!

What would be the diference between regular metals and high carbon?
@KyleRoyerKnives
@KyleRoyerKnives 4 года назад
Hey C C good question. Metals are a lot like people. Some are soft and smooth. Rigid and brittle. Rigid and bendable. Bendable yet spring back. Bendable and form to their environment... A lot like people. And our lives wouldn’t be the same with any one of them missing. We all be on this journey together. Be careful and be safe. Dad

Question for Dad; Is that sanding bit on the Rotozip homemade or store bought?
