Hi Den , did the same thing with bamboo drinking straws. Put two small plugs on each side off the straw and put a thin skewer thru the whole straw into the holes drilled on each side and put some crazy glue in to the hole let it dry works great

Loving this. I'm 40 and always made my own floats. Now I've gone way back and using porcupine quills with a centrepin reel. The satisfaction and results are amazing. Keep it going Den👍🏻

@Fishing with Den Absolutely and it doesn't have to cost the earth. I'm still not tempted to make hooks from paperclips yet though! All the best and "Tight lines" Den.👍🏻

Good job Den - I just gave a whole set of straw floats to my grandson for his birthday and realise there was a dearth of plastic straws. As ever you have given me hope and inspiration for another batch - thanks.

Great vid Den…. Brings back memories of making floats back in the 80s-90s with my old mate Alan Wood. He emigrated to OZ in the mid late 90s. Very good angler. sadly he died a couple of years ago from motor neurone disease…. You may have known him, he was very keen match angler and I’m sure he fished for the Oz international team.

I used to make floats myself when i was a kid, i'd make them out of anything that was a tube, never use paper straws though, used plenty of plastic straws (which was my, peacock quills and balsa wood. I've made them from 4 SSG all the way down to 2 number 4's, i'd use pretty much the same cane for the inserts as you are den(they were sold as meat skewers).

Many years ago, a lot of us made our own floats, but these days it seems to be a dying art mate.

Thanks James. Have a look at my Float Making Playlist: ru-vid.com/group/PL1-iJW0W-2_mpAIwPFbpns0OfwzsjQ-Kk I have made all sorts of floats over the years including loaded wagglers, One of the easiest ways to do it is to buy some 2.5mm brass from a model shop. Cut it to length and insert it into the base of the float. That way it will still accept a float adapter.

Hi Den Might be worth trying coating the straw body with nail hardener varnish or super glue to give some extra strength Pete in Worksop Notts
@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen Год назад
Thanks Pete. It does say somewhere in there that I gave it 2 coats of Marine Spar Varnish? Or did you mean before the float was painted?
@peterdobrijevic3107
@peterdobrijevic3107 Год назад
Yes, before the float was painted, give it a chance to soak in the paper. Then paint it.
@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen Год назад
@@peterdobrijevic3107 Interesting point. These straws seem to be a bit waxy, so I'm not sure if it would soak in or not.

Thnx Den, good vlog. Just two things to considder: For the paper on the stick you can also use Painting tape, witch glue wel withe the woodglue on the stick. And... if you put the float on an replaceble system on the line, why use replaceble tips? Thnx
@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen Год назад
Thanks Paulus. I like the idea of using Painters Tape. I might try that if I make more of these. I use the replaceable tips in my floats so I don't have to make multiple floats of the same size with different coloured tips.

@@FishingwithDen Den, a possible small improvement I've tried is to replace the Gel Pen insert with some thicker plastic tube. This takes the skewer in the centre the same (2.5mm ID) but has a 4 mm O.D. thus negating the need to build up the diameter as it fits snugly inside the straws and any reed version s can be drilled out to suit.. The tube was difficult to trace on ebay but I eventually found some used in the brewery industry. It's not rigid but is held in place by the reed/straw. I don't know if it's available in Oz as I know breweries are quite rare!!!

Epoxy does not stick to plastics. Super glue is a better option.

Hi Den, great video. Do you think PlastiDip might work better on the body of the float to give it more strength? I know the cost is more than paint but it might do away with the need to varnish or lacquer after painting, also not sure if PlastiDip would add buoyancy or weight, maybe worth a try.
@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen Год назад
I had never heard of Plastidip until you mentioned it Martin. It might work, but I just looked it up and it seems to be quite expensive.

Hi Clive. It's a glass tube which I bought from the Reject Shop. I think it is supposed to be for flowers.

Den, I started to make a float from a ball point pen body (or gel pen). I thought I could weight it with split shot inside the tube. First attempt worked fine but too much protruding above the water in my water butt so added a second shot and it sank!! Now I have to wait until the water level drops or gets warmer so I can plunge my arm in to retrieve it. Perhaps you can make a video using your gel pen bodies to avoid any wastage.
@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen Год назад
@@colinhope I don't use the gel pen insides for actual floats Colin. They don't take enough weight. I do, however, use them for thicker tips which they are fine for. Also, if you want loaded bases, an easy way to do that is to buy some 2.5mm brass rod from a model shop. You can cut it to length and then insert it as both the loading and the peg of the float.
