The A-10 Thunderbolt 2 (AKA the "Warthog") is only a 30mm, but it's a gatling style gun. We never really "Skipped" the 105s in production of cannon armed aircraft. The AC-130 carries those... If you really want to look at it a bit different, you could say that Japanese dive bombers responsible for the end of USS Arizona were armed with cannon ammo. The "bombs" were 14inch battleship shells in a casing that allowed them to be carried by the bombers.

Couple of things: Having the drum Magazine at the center of gravity is incredibly important in a plane like this. Very well done! Ammo is make up a significant amount of weight, so having the drum at center of gravity is the only way to give the pilot any chance of hitting consecutive shots, since there are no fly by wire aim assist shenanigans going given the level of tech. Also, given enough fuel capacity or even mid air refueling (aerial refueling was invented and used even before WW2) this this could be a potent ASW / convoy raid aircraft. Stick a radar on it, give it another seat for a navigator, done... Though the crews will probably hate it given the lack of accomodations for missions that last so long.

That is one sexy aircraft! I was totally thinking 'Moonbat' as you were building it and I'm glad to see it wasn't lost on you, either. As for the concept of aircraft attacking and sinking ships using a large calibre gun... I seem to remember hearing or reading somewhere about a B-25 (either a G or a H, I can't remember which) sinking a Japanese destroyer with 5 rounds of 75mm. I don't know how much truth there is to that, but I'm sure I heard it somewhere. Oh, and the thing with the Sheriden's recoil - I think the thing was that the gunner had to quickly move his hand away from the breach when the gun was fired, or otherwise run the risk of a broken wrist.

Funfact: In WW2 they actually mounted 75mm howitzers to naval raiding aircraft like B-25s and B-24s. However, the squadrons operating these planes noticed that for commerce raiding, what they needed was *suppressing fire*. The attack method for these planes was usually a technique called "skip bombing", where you drop a bomb so that it skips across the surface of the water like a rock. In order to do this, you have to fly parallel to the water's surface for a pretty substantial distance, meanwhile every gun on the ship your targeting is firing at you. The 75 was decent enough but most crews could only fire it 3-4 times on an attack run, so a couple of squadrons replaced these cannons with a whole bunch of .50 caliber machine guns.

A few notes: - 152mm is 6", hence why it's so common. - Very few, if any, destroyers carried 152mm cannons. Most destroyers had 4"-5" guns (102mm-127mm), while many light cruisers had 6" guns. - Between the torpedoes and bombs used against armored capital ships, and the machine guns and light cannons used against frigates and unarmoured ships, there were semi-armour piercing rockets, such as the British RP-3 or the American Tiny Tim, which were used quite effectively against lightly armored naval targets such as destroyers and light cruisers. - With the addition of a hydraulic recoil absorption system, the recoil from a short-barreled 152mm cannon such as the one mounted on this plane would be mitigated enough to be unlikely to damage the airframe. - With the aircraft's ability to dive, it could easily fire down through the thinner deck armour of ships, hitting engine rooms or shell magazines, and causing critical damage. - If the cannon were adjusted to aim along a vector with the aircraft's center of mass, the recoil would A. be more evenly spread across the airframe, and B. not cause the airframe to pitch when firing, keeping the gun aligned during attack runs and preventing stalls.

I really like that plane. It's elegant, even though its a bit bloated with the ammunition drum. I think what it could be used for is for hunting U-Boats. As this is around 1945ish, submarines are going to be diesel-electric types that spend most of their time on the surface, only submerging when they need to for avoiding detection. What RAF Coastal Command had to hunt U-Boats during WWII was De Havilland Mosquitoes with a 57mm 6pdr gun. They would find the U-Boat, fire an AP shell through the hull so they can't submerge, and then another aircraft could finish it off with rockets. A 6 inch CPCBC shell with a decent HE filler could probably sink a U-Boat in one hit.

Like the guns on planes weren’t already big enough.

in ww2, the italians designed and tested an anti-ship aircraft with a 102mm gun and deemed it effective enough to order some but the italian armistice put a stop to that. the only one that was built was destroyed in an allied bombing

I was eating when messier made the drag joke. I stopped chewing and my dog stopped coughing… time literally came to a halt.

This is like the anti-naval version of a PBJ-1 or an Hs 129. Just mount the biggest gun you can fit into a plane and throw it at the ground.

Love it! One more great creation. And I do like those real world planes where they just build a plane around a big gun. The A-10 is of course the most well know... But boy, there where some big gunned WWII aircraft too. Not 152mm howitzer size, what I know off. But proper tank calibre guns. With the lagers being over 100 mm I believe. Even the modern AC-130 gunship has variants with 105 mm howitzer. May all be retired now however.

You have to put the canards somehow below the muzzle. That way the recoil should drive you up instead of down.

Just a thought. •Lengthen the nose •Lengthen the cockpit •Twin 30mm installed for pilot to strafe. •Single 152mm installed (rear facing) Gunner in rear of cockpit fires as pilot climbs out of the run. 🤷‍♂️

AAF camo idea: Clearly, someone's been dipping into the ol' "Arcade game bosses for tanks," idea, and the Army borrowed a couple planes to see if the idea has merit on ground.

Italy actually kind of did this irl, they mounted a 102mm cannon on a P.108, a mid thirties 4 engined heavy bomber. This was also made to hunt ships (but obviously went nowhere)

Considering the advent of guided artillery munitions, a flight of what amounts to flying M777's is pretty hilarious.

Now we need a Gustav cannon (or, if you want it to be “practical” a Dora) cannon on a plane 😂

All I’m saying is with vt fuses, and a radar gunsight, it’d be very effective against other aircraft

155mm was used by the Germans and US in WWII, only the Red Army used 152mm. The Henschel Hs129 mounted an autoloading 75mm gun for tank-busting that also had a counter-firing rocket at the back, so the recoil from the gun did not rip the gun out from the housing it was in. I bet you can't top any of that from real life application. Oh, I think with the 50mm cannon that was more standard than the 75mm experimental, in practical use and while diving on the target to close, it did feel like the Hs129 stopped in mid-air when firing.

Very interesting design, you always make cool stuff and I'm excited for the official release. However, it's hard to tell in the video, but I think the props should be rotating the opposite directions, they way they currently rotate both of them are critical engines, meaning if one fails, you see the worst performance loss due to how and where the props move the air. Other than that, great design, I'll definitely try making something similar when I get the chance.
