According to a recent study from the Pew Research Center, almost one in four Americans has not read a book in the past year. So to find out if that is true, we sent a team to the street to ask pedestrians to name a book, and here are the very sad results.

These videos are heavily edited for maximum humor. The punchline that people don't read anymore wouldn't work unless they feature those people who either really don't read or who freeze up in front of the camera so much that they can't give any decent response. They probably got dozens of answers from people who could "name a book", but that wouldn't have fit their premise. It's not actually a commentary on illiteracy in modern America. They're just having a laugh.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, The Hunger Games, The Help, The Lorax, y'know whatever it is current. Obviously, Kimmel found people who already admit they don't read books making that question even harder for them. It is still pretty scary. I'm sure they talked to people who could name books, but I wonder how many they asked and what the ratio was. Was it 10 to 1? 10 knew a book and 1 didn't so they asked like 50 people and had 5 who didn't know? I'm a lil' worried to know the answer.

Isn't romeo and juliet considered a play?
@LexitaMai
@LexitaMai 4 года назад
@@yardenoved599 yeah, original writing was a script for physical play, but the adaptations we tend to all know/read are the book versions. So it's both. Idk if you ever did the play or anything in school, but that version is different. The common one that we all know is the book version. So if they said "Romeo and Juliet", it wouldn't be wrong, it just wouldn't be referring to live play version
@markissleepy
@markissleepy 4 года назад
@@LexitaMai Wait... what? I have never seen a prose book version of Romeo and Juliet - only the play. I just searched on Amazon and the top 50 results (I stopped looking after that) were all either the play or books analyzing the play and when I google "Romeo and Juliet Book" everything that comes up is related to the play. Did you read a novelization of a movie based on the play somewhere? I've seen a few movie versions too and they are all essentially the play. Just curious what this book version that "everyone knows" that is different from the play is.
@LexitaMai
@LexitaMai 4 года назад
@@markissleepy go to any college or advanced highschool class and they'll give you a direct code to the ones in the library to make sure you don't borrow or purchase the play version because it's different than the book version lol. The play version has far more stage direction and cues than the book version and often is bound differently.
@camelliabell9046
@camelliabell9046 4 года назад
@@markissleepy I've worked in both a school and public library, and can confirm this is true. While the plotline of both is identical, there are some key differences to the play vs the novel version of Romeo and Juliet. The play Version is meant to be acted out, so it gives more detail on what exactly is supposed to physically happen and how. Most people *do* only know the book version, but don't even realize that they know that version because it's not common knowledge that there is a seperate version for plays. Often times it's only those who perform in a high quality theater (so often professional, but at times highschools with a more funded program, such as Stadium High School in Washington State, where I worked) who are aware of and have access to the play version. It's almost impossible to come by unless you're working directly through a performance agency or extend, so there is likely little to no mention of it online.

seriously man? ANY book. ANY. You don't even need to read one to know a book's title. Red riding hood, Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter. Really now? Jesus christ. If this happened to my country, being embarrassed wouldn't be enough, I would want to move to another country. Such behavior is only justified for countries with illiteracy problems, e.g: Sub Saharan Africa and South Asia. I cannot believe this is America.
