Third time's the charm! I botched my initial application and learned a lot about what I did wrong. Use the larger 9 inch roller for a faster and smoother job.

I would not pour that directly on the car, you don't get an even distribution of the crumb rubber. The tips you gave us about the textured paint are very useful, thank you! If using their textured product with crumb rubber in it, you need to stir and pour into a tray so that the rubber bits are evenly distributed. The 2nd and 3rd coats have to be applied within a certain time frame to avoid sanding and Xylene between coats. Coat #1 needs to be dry to touch but not cured, before Coat #2, etc. Durabak 18 is an excellent Polyurethane Bedliner, supple and flexible over Epoxy liners like Rhino etc, No one else makes this. It dries fast with a short working time. You can roller brush it on or spray it. You can use smooth or textured paint. You cannot custom color it and it comes in a limited range of solid colors or clear. I'm going to try adding mica pearl pigments to it to see if I can get a pearly white or metallic shade, but its too heavy and will probably not show this up. Also they recommend a non water based paste pigment which is impossible to find. Textured paint requires a special roller. Smooth paint requires mohair rollers for a smooth application. End result is a satin finish, no gloss but not flat either. Subtle sheen. Very pleasing and hard as a rock, so no flaking off like epoxy. Rubber EPDM roofs on RVs can also be covered with Durabak smooth or textured as it is flexible enough to take the movement. If you use the smooth Durabak 18 paint, you won't need as much paint as textured and application is easier as you don't have to deal with the crumb rubber distribution issue, just the paint. Once you have used a can partially, transfer contents to a smaller jar and add some xylene to it. If paint fills the can, it won't harden up as fast as if you leave some air inside a half filled can. This is what hardens paint fast. Cleaning solvent is Xylene, which is banned in CA, so you have to find an online source that will mail it to you. Durabak makes Solvide, a Xylene copy, but ridiculously priced at $22 per quart! For $52 you can get 4 quarts with shipping included (Hazmat fees), from Walmart or similar source. Forget about cleaning the rollers, use new ones for each coat or keep them soaked in xylene.

The difficulty in working with this product is how fast it dries, the rubber bits really do pile up fast on the roller.. especially in a warmer environment.

Are you saying you can apply nontextured product to outside car body with roller and brush? Do you get roller/brush marks or does it level out? How many coats? Does it look better nontextured, that is, does it look more like conventional paint job?
@ShareXP
@ShareXP Год назад
I have only used the textured product so far. You get more coverage with the Durabak without the rubber pieces.
@mjremy2605
@mjremy2605 Год назад
@@tommak6516 1. Yes. Outside car body. Also on dashboard if you want to renew it. This paint is very durable and a bedliner paint. It is a moisture cured Polyurethane, not an Epoxy paint like Rhinoliner or UPOL Raptor Liner which are very brittle, dry even faster in 30 mins and have to be sprayed due to fast drying. Don't use those. 2. The rollers must be Mohair for smooth paint, or textured rollers for textured paint. The paint does self level leaving no brush marks at all. 3. You need 2 coats minimum. Do one coat, wait till finger touch dry, and apply a 2nd coat. Then let it cure. If you let first coat fully cure, you need to repeat prep before 2nd coat. Timing is important. 4. Prep - Bare metal will need sanding, then metal etching (bonds rust), then paint. Previously painted surface will need light sanding, rub down with Xylene, then paint. 5. Solvent is Xylene, not anything else. You cannot buy Xylene in CA due to strict VOC laws, so I bought on Walmart website and miraculously they shipped it to me! Durabak makes an overpriced Xylene substitute called Solvide, don't bother, get the Xylene. 6. Conventional car paint is a delicate, flimsy water based acrylic paint with a clear gel coat on top. There are many layers, you need a clean room, and a spray gun setup and its costly to buy this paint from dealers. The advantage is that you can get whatever color you want, some really cool candy colors, metallic, color shift, hypershift, etc. Check local laws first. The disadvantage is that it scratches easily and a royal pain to apply and you breathe paint fumes and your car is out of operation for a week. 7. Durabak18 is so durable, the US Navy uses it (Durabak26 is same paint but tested to Navy standards). It is very resistant to chips and scratches, makes an excellent bumper paint for metal, fiberglass, plastic fenders, as well as car body or concrete steps, or EPDM rubber roof on RV, or car metal/ fiberglass body. The finish is satin matte, not shiny. You get a solid color standard palette, no fancy shades, no metallic, nada. Boring but strong. You get a clear shade too. If you want to mix pigments, only non-water based paste pigments will work. Try at your risk. The delicate metallics or mica dust will not work as the heavy thick Poly swallows them up and they need thin acrylic paints to work best, so you have a limited color palette. 8. Durabak dries faster in moist air than dry air! It is moisture cured paint. Your working time is 6-8 hrs, keep diluting with Xylene to thin out. Your shelf life is very limited. If you have leftover paint, dilute with Xylene and transfer to a small container to fill up. If there is an air gap on top, it will dry fast. Don't leave an air gap, find the right size container. This is true of all paints but esp with fast drying ones. Forget about reusing mohair roller, impossible to clean, ditch and use new ones. 9. There are several Durabak demos on RU-vid look for them. You will see the paint effect. I would not recommend textured paint, use the smooth one. You can make your own textured paint using Crumb Rubber granules, just be sure to match up color with paint. Black granules with black paint, etc. or they will stick out a different color. Use granules on concrete steps for non skid function. Remember that textured paint traps dirt, mold, grease, and is only useful for non-skid surface tread nothing more. It also creates wind drag on vehicles. Use smooth and get more coverage too. You can mix and match smooth with textured as you wish. Some people also sprinkle sand on the wet paint and recoat to get a finer texture. Good luck!

@tommak6516 Год назад
@@mjremy2605 Thanks for your detailed information. Assuming I would use the nontextured (smoth) paint, can you use a (cheaper) foam roller instead of the more expensive one? Also, how much does it take to do two coats on the average car (would a gallon be enough?, too much?). It seems this paint is quite expensive.

To save the leftovers like you said you can put it in an airtight container or put painters tape over the lip of the durabak can before you start mixing and pouring then remove painters tape after using the liner paint put top back on securely and store can upside down.

Flipping the can upside down is an interesting idea, help keeps it more airtight? I had some set aside in an "airtight" peanut butter container but it was completely solidified when I went to use it for a touchup.

@ShareXP
@ShareXP 2 года назад
If you have the equipment, I'd say to try spraying it. The pictures I have seen show smoother results. The 9 inch roller is available on their website.
@mjremy2605
@mjremy2605 2 года назад
No, you don't want to spray on the textured paint. The spray nozzle will get blocked by the large particles and you also won't get an even distribution of the rubber pieces. You can spray the smooth one, but roller brushing it is almost the same effect as it is thick paint, and spraying requires a lot more prep and cleaning solvent Xylene which is banned in CA. Plus, you inhale vapor based on Xylene, highly toxic. Avoid spraying!
@ShareXP
@ShareXP 2 года назад
I emailed Durabak and mentioned some of the inconsistencies in my initial rolling of my car, and they suggested spraying it for a more even finish.. so I'm assuming there is a way if they said that.

what kinda pressure do u reccomend when rolling? more of a "let the roller do the work" or add some pressure?
@ShareXP
@ShareXP 2 месяца назад
Mild pressure like painting a wall. Don't be cheap with it and try to stretch it out or the rubber granules will not lay evenly, and will build up at the end of your roller.
