I dont see anything wrong with that at all.. . just go to the junkyard and understand nothing is forever and ever, this side of heaven. If it looks good from the mailbox, its good. Just because they did that way at the factory, doesn't mean we have to duplicate it, . It wouldn't bother me to take an old truck, or a school bus and paint it in latex. .It works for houses. How many guys have I heard say, I used to enjoy that old hotrod, until I put that expensive paint job on it. Now all I do is worry about it, .where to park it.
Some people might scoff at this kind of paint job, but hey man, that actually looks pretty damn effective. For the the cost and effort, oh hell yeah, I'd be real content with that. Good for you, nice job well done. Thanks for showing us.
It's so cool to see someone not trying to sell me bunch of crap explaining this, just doing what the can and experimenting, sharing the knowledge etc. Great video.
Thanks for the real life testimony!!!! Mine is over a year and looks exactly the same and I've never polished, waxed, or any other protectant applied. It sits outside every day of the year. Snow, Rain, or Shine!
@@318willrun Yeah I did the whole trucks, Buzzed them down with a DA and sprayed them. At the time I think it was about 25 a gallon. Auto paint is way too expensive for a work truck
I like it ! When I was a kid an older guy I knew grabbed a brush and a bucket of paint and went after a 60 something Ford. It turned out pretty nice! Guy knew how to use a brush, which brush to use and which paint to use. It was actually hard to tell he used a brush.
Great instructions. Followed your examples and tips. Same paint, flood, acetone. I used some small fruit cups to measure so when I painted it ended up the same color on all doors. Much less prep than spraying. Major parts sanding,, cleaning,, tac cloth. Did it on my driveway in 1 week. Pretty smooth finish. Minor resanding for easy touch ups. Spent less than $200 large van.. Thanks.
I'm a retired Auto body man to and I'm sick of doing body work anymore I'm just frankinstining the body work JB weld and screws no filler sanding just wanted it to look good from a distance
Absolutely beautiful Job Brother! When rolled Right whether you paint the house a truck a boat or whatever... Generally speaking a Roller paint job , is usually Far Better than any spray rig !
I did this with my ford transit and it worked terrifically. kurust underneath then painted in layers mixed with thinner. Each layer had more thinner and the finish got smoother. Took a bit of work but it did the job.
I couldn't help but laugh when I found this. Because my wife and I painted our Chevy g 20 camper van the same way this guy did. And it actually turned out good. Good for a junky old camper van anyway! Good video. I enjoyed it.
That looks very nice! Sometimes doing something for yourself and all by yourself is all that matters. As long as it satisfies you then it’s gold !!! Good job ! 👍
no no no....take a body paint chip off somewhere like inside door panel and take it to home depot where they use a machine to identify/match your vehicle exact color! worked great for me!
I like your scientific measuring - perfect. Custom color mixing - perfect. For what it cost, the small amount of time and effort, compared to what it was, it turned out excellent - its a score. Great job.
Absolutely beautiful my man! I'm gonna do this to a Dakota I just bought for $800! Used to do auto body work years ago. Buddy of mine did all the spray gun painting, and he was great at it. This method is fantastic for anything, but particularly nice and simple for certain projects. Great job!
Thank you for proving that I'm not completely insane by wanting to do this to my car! I knew someone would have a video 😆. It looks great. And I actually like how it turned out kind of two-toned. Oh and your measurements on the first coat were cracking me up (the "science" plus the free pours--good stuff).
Many years ago, I was driving a fuel oil truck, One day as I was making deliveries, I was coming down a country road and an old guy was painting his chevy a pretty shade of Sears weather beater .baby blue looked to be with a 3/4 in. brush. It looked good from the road. :)
My uncle and his buddy did this with his 1972 Ford Maverick. The same Blue he painted his house with, he had a bunch left over, so they painted everything 😂 It actually came out pretty good, no drips or anything, and then he clear coated the whole thing.
I highly suggest brushing a few coats of Penetrol over the whole thing. It’s the best clear coat you can get for under $20. Great job for the money spent
I like it. It turned out way better than I thought it would, even with your high tech measurement system. Way back in high school, a guy in our class painted his "56 Chevy with a powder puff. He used lacquer paint instead of Rusto . A unique look and it actually turned out rather nice.
Many years ago I worked with a lady who told us she was going to do this very thing over the weekend. Sure enough on Monday morning she came to worked in her newly painted car. She did it as you would paint a room. Used a brush around things like the door handles lights etc. At the time I thought you have more nerve than me. From a distance it was not as bad as you would think. On the other hand my Brother-in*law painted his car with a Wagner Power Painter as it was known at the time. Electric spray gun. Turned out very well as I remember.
I did a roller job on my ‘72 Ford Maverick 4 dr, 302 ci, back in 1980, 2 coats of primer and then 4 coats ( I used a full gallon of Tremclad Dark Blue rust paint with some thinner added to smooth her out) and it came out fantastic. Rust proofed for years 😂👍🇨🇦
1970 Ford Maverick, I used oil based chocolate brown, a friend and two brushes. I think the Ford Maverick had more in common with a Model T than anything today. Grandma, what's "pulling the choke?"
I've used a roller to paint my deuce and a half and Scout as well as my other off road vehicles for many years, sans finnish sanding. To get a smoother finnish thin the paint, use reducer and a fine, low knap roller or quality paint brush. If you use a good quality brush with fine bristles, you won't get any brush marks and a low knap roller usually gives a quite smooth finnish also
It will be dull in a month. That's just the facts with Rustoleum. If you add enamel hardener to it . .available for the lay people at Tractor Supply, it will GREATLY change the chemistry to where it will hold a shine.
In the mid 90s my dad did this to an '86 dodge van, almost the same color too. That paint stayed on until it went to the junkyard in the early 2000s. If it works it works.
I'm binging all sorts of roller paint job threads and videos right now and I am blown away by the outcomes. I do wonder why people don't bother with clearcoat afterwards as it would protect the paint better and probably boosts the finish by a long shot. Either way though, I really like how this hood turned out, I think you did a great job.
That looks excellent for a DIY job. Even coverage, unlike diy spray jobs. So much less to protect and cover if not spraying too. After seeing this vid, I wont use spray cans to touch up(bumpers) again. The additive that smooths out roller marks is sweet! Matching and mixing colors is challenging when painting parts. But with vehicles, you can order OEM colors at an automotive paint supply. I would consider doing this on my 03 Ranger that is Arizona sun damaged on hood and roof. The shops want $1500! Thanks for sharing.
That came out pretty nice.... I would like to see what you could do with the turbine HVLP paint kit from Harbor freight was $69 you would have a masterpiece! With your skill.
Love it! Excellent video. I have two early 90's Dodges, a Shadow and a Diesel truck, and this looks like just the ticket I was looking for. Less work, don't need so much masking, or the respirator, less muss and fuss in every way.
I never heard about Flood before. My "New" to me van had a TV company sign painted on both sides Prepping was a good wash and once over with a green dishwashing pad and a rinse. Then I rolled the paint on with a short nap roller like yours. Then with a fine brush, tipped the paint vertically, then horizontally, scraping excess paint OFF the brush into a coffee can. I gave the sign extra coats. It looked pretty good.....until a hurricane sand blasted one side of the van, but the hurricane damage is a different story. Same cure, though. Next time I'll try some Flood. The roll and tip method is used on racing yacht hulls, and often preferred to spraying. I didn't invent it, just copied it. Thanks for a nice video.
all 3 of those dodges look great to me! i had so much fun at 12yo learning to drive on the clay backroads of northeast georgia with my dad in our 79 dodge low top conversion van with the 318 in it. would love to have one again.
Looks Great. A Lot Better than it Did! That Flood Stuff really make it Lay Down Smooth like you said. In the End you probably can't even tell it was done with a Roller. Great Bang for the Buck Video!
I am pretty much using your method only I added a step and I'm using the Rust-Oleum primer first The brown one I put on the first coat of paint on top of the primer It was about four hours ago and it's still a bit tacky I used 5 qts gloss royal blue 2 qts gloss black 10 oz acetone 20 oz flood penetrol Is that normal for it to take over 4 hrs to dry? It wasn't really hot outside when i painted it had cooled down So I'm thinking that might be why Also after seven months how is your paint job holding up Do you have any follow-up videos I'm doing this because I don't want to spend a lot my vehicle is a 2005
Primer is a great idea. Yes, the stickiness will take a few hours to leave, and cool temps with no sun will add to that time. Only follow up videos I have are the ones with the van showing in it. And you can see how well the paint is doing! We are happy with it.
@@318willrun Thank you so much I just checked on paint about an hour ago And it's much dryer so I would say when I take it out into the sunlight tomorrow That should probably bake the first coat in pretty well I'm surprised at how glossy it is too so I'm really happy about that I have to say that your method is by far the most simple method I have seen and I have watched a lot of videos about this 😁🤗
