A year in to ownership of an R8 V8 I summarised my experience. May be of interest to some of you. In the end I owned the car for 2.5 years and 30,000 miles and total cost of ownership (including depreciation) was £14,093. I'll let you be the judge of whether that's good value. But even as a daily driver every single mile brought a smile. Show me the money Let’s start with the costs. One year of ownership and about 6,000 miles has cost £2,250 (a health check, 4 new tyres, replacement rear brake light and a £875 service) plus road tax and insurance costing £1,100 combined, plus fuel which I’d estimate has cost an eye-watering £2,300. So £5,650 all in. I’m clutching to the fact that’s less than £1 a mile, but it’s obviously a lot of money. And that’s without anything major needing replacing. The tyres I actually couldn’t find cheaper than the price Audi quoted. The rear brake light replacement was something like £230 and I felt Audi weaselled their way out of this being covered under the used approved warranty. High running and maintenance costs are thankfully offset by very little depreciation over the last year. So overall, it’s probably been cheaper to run than if I’d picked up a brand new A3, which would lose a lot of value over the first few years. No problems as a daily driver For a wide, low supercar/sports car it remains an easy daily driver. Visibility is good, there is no scraping over bumps/ramps/inclines if taken at sensible speeds. I had more issues getting a MK1 TTR over bumps than I have had with the R8 - the front splitter gives great clearance for this type of car, and none of the horror stories I’ve heard around Gallardos and the need for front-lift for speed bumps, car parks and driveways. Manoeuvrable at low speeds, and easy to place when parking. Rear parking camera superb. Go easy on the peddle and it feels more like 200BHP than 430BHP, and power delivery is smooth however heavy you are on the peddle, making it a civilised car to drive when you need it to be. It’s wide, and the doors are wide, and I’m pretty wide too - so you do have to think a little about parking spaces, but it has never stopped me from going somewhere or being able to park once I got there. It is thirsty though. Especially if you keep it a gear or two lower than it needs to be, to keep it in its peak power range and to get a howl from the engine. I’ve maybe averaged mid-teens. So get used to filling it up. Sense of occasion Time and familiarity with the car obviously means it doesn't feel quite as special as it did. But I still get exciting at the thought of taking it for a drive, I still take the long/fun route from A to B, it still makes me look back everytime I’m walking away from it. Dropping down low in to the seat feels great. The sound of the V8 remains something wonderful. More subtle, but (for me) far more special than trick exhausts on smaller engines. I love the ‘stealth’ look, in black - but admit that pretty much any colour makes the car look more special (and better to photograph!). Dealership experience The car was bought from the Audi used approved network and so has been looked after by Audi dealerships. They’ve been ok, but no stand out service. No more special than I experienced owning Toyotas or Peugeots. Reminders you’re driving something a bit different Struggling to source a tyre and find anywhere local outside of the dealer network able to change a tyre reminds you the car is relatively low volume and relatively unique. Halfords, Kwik-Fit, Black Circles, F1 Autocentres were all unable to help. And as far as I am aware not all Audi dealerships are set up to service the R8 (they need to be Audi Sport centres), and I struggled to find good independents familiar with the R8. Community Great online community via both r8talk.com and R8 owners club on Facebook, but a shame that there is very little in the way of R8 owners meets. I’m jealous of friends with Porsches and the incredibly active clubs, but obviously there are a few more 911s on the road than there are R8s. And just a little bit more history! But Audi forums like this are great. Public reaction I don’t like standing out. So I’d no desire to own this car to say “look at me, look at me”. It nearly put me off. The car does get noticed, but only in a positive way. I’m surprised by how many non-petrolheads know what it is, when they wouldn’t have a clue what model of Ferrari had just driven past. Public reaction has only been positive - I’ve had countless conversations at petrol stations with folk wanting to know a bit about the car, and no issues in traffic or being let out at junctions. Kids pointing and shouting "that's an R8" is lovely. Interestingly the car gets very little interest or enthusiasm at car meets, which I don’t mind - I’d rather spend the time looking around everyone elses cars than talking about my own - but whilst the general public seem quite interested in it (and know what it is) the car community seems less interested. and finally I ended up owning my R8 for 2.5 years and 30,000 miles and loved every single one of them. Highly recommended.

I had an early DB9 (as the 5th owner) as my ONLY car. Aside from spending a great many hours on my driveway with it redressing the multiple paint bubbles on EVERY body panel by hand with wet-&-dry and an airbrush, I would thoroughly enjoy it every single time I took it out! Admittedly being a disabled wheelchair user (and spending all those hours/days/weeks in maintenance!), I typically cannot claim to have made "daaily" use of it and James' comment about not driving your supercar every day for every purpose is especially valid in my case and this definitely helps keep up the "special" nature of your relationship. But that said, I still found myself ALWAYS wanting to spend/have spent more time behind the wheel!!!

2018 GT3, 991.2, fortunate to get an allocation and spec’d it myself. As of yesterday it has 30,000 km, 12 track days and is driven all year long in Alberta (yes, winter rubber) and Texas. It’s a thrill driving to Walmart or tracking it at MSR Houston or Castrol Raceway Edmonton. For those of us that love driving, in my opinion, the best way to get the most value from any car is to drive it a lot, and I do.

From 2011 to 2018 I daily drove a 996 C2 (43,000), then a 996 turbo (38,000 miles) and finally a 997 turbo (25,000). That's roughly 15,000 miles a year. Interestingly part of the enjoyment for me was the car becoming so familiar that at times it felt like an old slipper. But it always entertained and it always felt special. Just a different kind of special. My simple philosophy was you'll spend longer in a box than out of one, so don't drive one unless you have to. Still feel the same now. In fact after this whole pandemic thing even more so.

The end of this video is such a fantastic point, perspective is HUGE. Also, the novelty of flashy cars wears off much quicker than the enjoyment of a good car. I sold my previous car after 2.5 years and 27k miles and genuinely never got in it without it putting a smile on my face. Due to lockdown I thought screw it I'll buy a Porsche and it's great, but I've done 3k miles in 6 months and that's about the limit of keeping the magic alive.

Agree completely about the overhangs, as driveway transitions can induce cringes when you hear the scraping. I've also slowly crawled over many a speed-bump while listening to the floorpan scraping. I daily drive a 1st gen R8 V10 Plus. Your points about 'specialness' and becoming too familiar with the car are very valid. As you say the R8 is such an easy car to drive that it's quite easy to just forget you're not in an Audi A4 or something more 'normal', especially if you leave it in auto and just let it do its thing. The times that I have enjoyed the car the most have been after I have had a courtesy car for a day or two and then got back into it. Suddently the specialness has returned and I've realised how amazing it really is.

Driving them every day simply tarnishes the whole point of them. The Toblerone theory, if I may.. Eating a Toblerone every day ends up making you sick of them. Having one once a month can end up being a love affair. Curry, McDonald's, s£x... Fill the blank in as you wish.. They are meant to thrill and excite the senses. You don't want those senses dulled by repeat use. I remember a long time ago when I owned the original Audi TT. That WAS a sports car you could drive every day. But what was so different about the TT? Well.. It was actually a Golf. After that I owned a Honda S2000 (that I adored) and actually that wasn't too bad to commute in. But I was in my late 20s. They are built like German tanks and with a 4cyl engine and cam timing they weren't that expensive to run. Such wonderful duality in that car.. But would I do that experience now, closing in on 40yo? Probably not. I'd rather drive my Honda Jazz to work. But that's probably an age thing. Very, very few cars possess that duality. Maybe the TT still does? Maybe an M3 does? Haven't driven them. The 911 isn't bad as a daily (have experience there). But by god, they are noisy. I take it the 991 and 992 are even softer to live with than the 997. It has to be the best example of the car that can do everything. But taken to the other extreme, my recent Ferrari 360.. If you drove that every day, you'd be trimming months off your life. They are simply put, fucking annoying cars to live with. However.. On that perfect day, they are simply perfect. And that's how these cars should be used. In my humble op.

I'd often drive my (at the time) girlfriend's FRS just to escape it for a "normal" car. Fast forward a couple of years and I've moved to Colorado and bought a LR4 to replace it as my daily. Now every time I take the Exige out it's an Event! And I've gained an off roader, so I get to enjoy even more driving experiences I hadn't before. My R8 V10 Plus is my daily driver. When I buy a special car I want to use it as and enjoy it much as I can not leave it in the garage as an “occasional” car. Whats the point if you hardly use it? However saying that I only do about 4000 miles a year. If I did a lot more then I would probably have a second car. I have had my R8 two years and have had no problems dailying it but then I’m single with no kids so the need for practicality is not an issue for me. 😂 Oh yeah and I have a motorbike if I fancy a break from the R8 but the R8 feels as special every time I drive it as it did the first day I got it.

My Wife was daily driven to college by her Mum through Liverpool in Lotus Exige S1. This was one of the most compromised cars ever. To get in you had to contortions your body and the same getting out. The doors had open fully as well and they were very long. To drive through town must have been a nightmare as the engine was roughly tuned and cammy and loud as it was decatted. The ride was crashy over pot holes and you spent a large time looking for them and driving around them. Also other cars, buses or lorries either didn't see you or were to busy staring and get to close for comfort. You were also extremely low as your bum was nearly 6" from the floor, a splitter which was nearly scraping on the road so speed bumps were a nightmare. Visibility was pretty awful as well. But yet for 7 months this was driven as a daily for 40 minutes by Mother in Law!!! Ps I didn't mention this same car was driven to Southern Spain and back on the Cannon Ball!!

I had a S2000 as my only car for 5 years, did 80,0000 miles in it. I know it’s not a super car, but it shares many of the impracticalities, two seats, no boot etc. I was very happy using it every day, but you are right James, it does lose that special feeling. Replaced the S2000 with an..........S2000 which I only used at weekends and it was special again. I’d rather have an expensive, impractical, hardly use weekend toy in the garage, and an old banger on the driveway than one very nice powerful, plush, autobahn barge for everyday use.

spot on re driving your "super" or "special" car daily. You get used to it, the power, the sound etc.. it kinda gets boring. I have a daily and an s2000 for fun. Driving the S2000 once every few days feels a lot more special than driving it daily which I did for a few months.

Well, it's not a supercar, but it's a BMW Z4, and I am not daily driving it, mainly for two reasons. First, the car is in near-mint condition, and I would lose my mind if someone would dent it on the parking of a supermarket, second, as you said, if you drive a car that low, you can forget about parking garages, I just can't go over the ramp in the parking garage. My solution is to create a driving route, if I need to do some work and I know where I will be parked, I take Z4, and if I don't, Mini One is perfect for the city. :) So our Z4 is often from Monday to Friday under a protective cover, waiting for the weekend, and Mini is on the road. As you pointed, the perfect driveway is Golf diesel and super car.

Think I'd have a supercar + a hot hatch for a daily. I've not driven any supercars but like you say I think it would be a bit less special if the supercar was my main daily. I would still want to use it regularly, but not all the time. I think some of the downsides would start annoying me. I would have something enjoyable but dependable and practical/comfortable as a main daily car, probably a Fiesta ST. And then I'd have the supercar (my choice would be a Nissan GT-R) to drive whenever I feel like it. That being said I know too many people who have a supercar for their "weekend car" and it never ever seems to make its way out of the garage. My friend has an R8 V10 and it's maybe been driven twice in the past year. Which I think is sad and a waste of money. So a balance somewhere between the two...

This is definitely a thing. It helps when you have good credit and a perfect record, but I remember adding my NSX to my policy as a second car (at the time) and my premium actually went down a few dollars due to the multi-car discount. In the States at least, most of the premium is tied up in the injury liability coverage, and less so the coverage for the car.

@RzogL
@RzogL 3 года назад
I daily drive a manual 986 Boxster S. OK, not quite a supercar, but it is a low, mid-engined 2-seater and genuinely a high performance vehicle. It will swallow a month's worth of groceries and do 30+ mpg on the motorway (probably more once I retrofit cruise control). I'm not saying I've never scraped the nose, but speed humps are not an issue and the ride quality is just fine even on broken pot-holed tarmac, now that I'm on refreshed suspension. 130k miles and no creaks or rattles. The cabin noise can be a bit tiresome after two hours on the motorway, the standard seats get uncomfortable after 3-4 hours, rear 3/4 visibility with the hood up is pretty poor, the standard halogen lights are shockingly bad, getting in and out of the car at the company car park involves contortions from the Kama Sutra and stop-go traffic on steep inclines such as those in busy multistorey car parks will result in expensive smells from the clutch. It lives outdoors, the paintwork has suffered for it but except for the exhaust clamps there is no rust. It starts first time, every time. The battery doesn't run flat even after a three week hibernation in winter but when you start the car after that long it has a way of telling you it really, really appreciates being used every day. It doesn't have cup holders but the only one who cares about that was my ex-girlfriend, who is American... Garage courtesy cars, business and holiday rentals, my dad's E39 and beloved E34 are all more practical, spacious, comfortable, relaxing and easier to drive (and the two BMWs handle and steer impressively. So well balanced!), but I always find myself missing my car, the weight and feel of the steering, the throttle response, the sound of the flat 6, the acceleration, the progressive brakes, the turn-in, the flat cornering, the looks, the way it shrinks around me like a glove, the way it makes me feel on a weekday summer evening drive after a long day at work. I'd always reckoned an R8 would be like a grown-up Boxster but the lack of boot space is disappointing. I wonder how good an i8 is as a daily.

Not a supercar, but I’ve tried using my 987 Boxster as a daily and it’s very difficult 😅 The main problem is the road noise on Australian roads, it can easily reach over 80db which is intolerable for more than a few minutes. I wonder whether new supercars like this R8 is any better

Two problems. Firstly the poor state of the UK roads coupled with the volume of traffic. Secondly ground clearance on ramps in multistory car parks. We often take my wife Z3 1.9 out in the summer for a local drive and when shopping the 5 series touring is preferred. The 911 turbo is rarely used on many journeys. When we lived in Switzerland close to the German border it was a a totally different situation.

@lkr8013
@lkr8013 3 года назад
For me the whole point of driving a supercar is not to be able to do so realistically on a daily basis due to severe compromises such as a lack of power steering, too low, too wide, too impractical, too noisy, dangerous in less than ideal conditions etc. factors that have nothing to do with cost. In that sense when you do get to drive them, one feels alive, concentrated and excited having carefully picked the right day/time to do so, knowing that it will offer an physical experience that is different to most. When it reaches a stage like most if not all new supercars nowadays when driving them becomes easy, effortless, not that much different (apart from in your head and attention generated) to a high performance car then it's bound to lose that special appeal especially when driven on a regular basis. Even it's sheer outright pace advantage can't be appreciated on public roads so it has to offer something else. Like with anything in life, when one gets used to something special, it ceases to become special with time.

I used to daily drive my MGB GT. You can pretty much daily drive any car. The boot space in the R8 is pretty terrible, it really limits you from going anywhere long distance in my opinion. Not a good GT in that regard because to me a GT is something you can load up with a punch of gear for a long trip abroad. I like to go camping in my cars while on driving holidays, that wouldn't be possible with such a small boot space. I have noticed though when owning a powerful car people always want to try and keep up with you. It's gotten a bit tiring so I just let them overtake me now. I slow right down and let them pass and drive like a twat.

Got to compare like-for-like costs though, I'll take my porker over any hatch (hot or otherwise), for example but a high end Merc/Lexus or any Bentley is far nicer than any sports/supercar for miles. It's not the practicality or costs, it's purely comfort and refinement. I did 4 hours last week and it was fun for about 2-3 perhaps.
